This program will review the elements of the Second Emancipation Proclamation and its influences on the Civil Rights Act of 1964. In 1961 and 1962 Martin Luther King made several appeals to President Kennedy to issue a Second Emancipation Proclamation outlawing segregation in commemoration of the centennial of Lincoln's proclamation of 1863.

                  Let's Talk About It: 
Making Sense of the Civil War

 

Dr. Brian Smith, professor at Johnson C. Smith University, will lead a five-part reading and discussion series called "Let's Talk About It: Making Sense of the Civil War" based on the following provided texts.

 Crossroads to Freedom by James McPherson        

 
Participants must pre-register and are encouraged to attend all the discussion sessions:  
      Imagining War: Saturday, February 2nd, 2pm Matthews

      Making Sense of Shiloh: Saturday, March 2nd, 2pm Matthews 
      The Shape of War: Saturday,March 16, 2pm Mint Hill
      War and Freedom: Saturday, March 30, 2pm Matthews

Operation College Launch is an annual series of programs designed to provide information you need about your college future. A variety of topics take you from start to finish in the college process. Topics include:
 
  • How to decide where to apply
  • Help with preparing your college application
  • When and how to prepare for college entrance exams
  • The best ways to craft your application essays
  • How to pick a school once you are accepted
  • Learning about financial aid
  • Filling out your FAFSA forms
  • How to pay for it all by searching for scholarships

2012 I Love My Librarian Award Winner
Beatriz Guevara 

Patrons nominate candidates for the award sponsored by Carnegie Corporation of New York and the New York Timesand administered by the American Library Association.  

 

Beatriz was nominated by a patron who attended a college planning and career informational workshop at the Library.  Because of the help she received, Beatriz's nominator is now enrolled in college, receiving financial aid, and is on her way to becoming a para­legal. 

 

"Beatriz is truly the people's librarian."  

  

Beatriz Adriana Guevara's career dream began at age 13, when she met a bilingual librarian. "Ever since, the profession had become a dream of mine," said the reference Librarian. "I liked the way she helped and inspired me and others, and that's what I want to do: help people achieve their dreams." Guevara has promoted reading and lifelong learning in the library and throughout the community.
