| BOOKS MADE INTO MOVIES | | |
Is the book really always better than the movie?
Several movies out this season will give you a chance to answer this question. Check out these books from the Library and make your decision.
By Stephanie Meyer
In the fourth and final book in the #1 best-selling teen vampire Twilight Saga, questions will be answered and the fate of Bella and Edward is revealed.
Currently in theaters.
By Leo Tolstoy
In Tolstoy's masterpiece, the gorgeous Anna Karenina is married to a significant government minister but falls in love with a prosperous army officer named Count Vronsky. Frantic for truth and significance in life, Anna recklessly defies the norms of Russian society. Damned and detested by her peers, Anna finds herself increasingly jealous and unfulfilled. Currently in theaters.
By David Mitchell
In his third novel, Mitchell weaves history, science, humor, and suspense into six separate but related narratives, each set in a different time and place.
Currently in theaters.
By Doris Kearns Goodwin
No one expected a self-educated prairie lawyer from Illinois to win the Republican nomination for the presidency in 1860. Lincoln won over his disaffected rivals by welcoming them - and their often dissenting opinions - into his cabinet. Abraham Lincoln's journey from dark horse presidential candidate to one of the world's greatest leaders was fraught with war, personal tragedy, and the struggle to end slavery, but his former rivals came to regard him with fierce devotion.
Currently in theaters.
By Yann Martel
This magical adventure is the story of Pi Patel. Pi is an Indian zookeeper's inquisitive son, and seeker after God -who embraces Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam. The adventure of his life begins when Pi's father decides to move to Canada. The ship sinks in the middle of the Pacific and Pi ends up on a lifeboat full of animals and Richard Parker -- a 450-pound Bengal tiger who soon eats all but Pi. His knowledge of animals, imagination and faith guide Pi and Richard Parker through 227 days adrift. A complex and uplifting fable about the power of both faith and fiction. In theaters November 21st.

AUTISM COLLECTION
| | |
According to the CDC study released in March 2012, one in 88 children in the United States has autism; boys are almost five times more likely to have autism (1 in 54) than girls (1 in 252). In North Carolina, the statistics are even more alarming - one in 70 have autism; (1 in 43) boys and (1 in 196) girls.
The Autism Reference Collection housed at ImaginOn's Spangler Library is an assortment of books identified to provide parents with the essential information they may need as they navigate the perplexing world of Autism. The "First 100 Books" were carefully selected by a team of community experts that worked to vet the selection and the books were purchased by The Autism Society NC - Mecklenburg Chapter. -Smart Start of Mecklenburg County "A Celebration of Collaboration of Autism"
Also as a result of the partnership between the Library and the Autism Society of North Carolina's Mecklenburg County Chapter, training videos have been produced by CML staff members who have been planning and presenting programming specific to children with special needs and their families since 2008. While the programming is geared for all types of special needs, the primary audience for this type of program is children on the autism spectrum. |
