Message from the Executive Director,

Nancy Gagnier

What a fabulous spring we're having!  Our winter was filled with so many wonderful programs--the MLK Observance, a theater performance for children with a message about difference and fairness, the Talking to Children About Race forum for parents, Coffee & Conversation with local neighborhood leaders for realtors, and more.  There's lots more coming and now that we have such wonderful weather, I hope you'll come out and join us.

Conversations on Race is a signature event for the Coalition--this is the community's chance to talk to one another about integration and race-related issues.  This year we are so excited to offer a screening of the award-winning documentary The New Neighbors, part of The New Metropolis series.  This film will certainly inspire all to talk about what we've been doing right for 15 years and what we still need to do....

Award-Winning Film Is Catalyst for Conversations on Race

New MetropolisJoin us for the local premiere of the film documentary The New Neighbors by award-winning film maker and Essex County native Andrea Torrice. Narrated by Academy Award nominated actress Ruby Dee, the film tells the inspiring of two ordinary people, one black and one white, who made racial integration the centerpiece of revitalizing Pennsauken, NJ.  The film provides a look at how a community has addressed issues of integration similar to those here in South Orange and Maplewood.  Viewers are invited to participate in round table discussions following the film. Through the Lens of Integration is the latest addition to the Coalition on Race's Integration through the Arts Program which brings residents of different races and backgrounds together around their shared interest in the arts.  Seasoned photographers Alison Brown, Bob Krasner and Joy Yagid are conducting the workshops which will cover digital photography basics, photo composition and evaluation criteria. The topic for all photos will be racial integration in our community.  Selected photos from this project will be exhibited at the Maplewood 1978 Arts Center as part of the annual Artist's Studio Tour on June 5th and during the pre- and post- exhibits at the Pierro Gallery in South Orange from May 26 through June 11th. Guess Who's Coming to Dinner-We Need Hosts for this Special Event!

Friday, June 10th or Satruday, June 11th

BWhat better way to celebrate our special community spirit than with an integrated dinner party?  Always wanted to get to know the neighbors, the parents of your kids' friends, the 7 am jitney bus crowd?  Here's your chance to extend that long overdue invitation and host a racially integrated gathering! How it works: hosts provide the dinner experience and guests are asked to make a minimum donation of $40. Interested in hosting a racially integrated dinner?  Call our office, 973-761-6116, or email us at info@twotowns.org to volunteer! If you would like to attend a dinner, we can arrange that, too!
