New Sustaining Sponsors Support the Real Estate Center

The Sustaining Sponsors of the Real Estate Center serve on the Executive Committee and play a leading role in defining the Center's goals and objectives.  At the Fall 2015 meeting, the Committee discussed the importance of recruiting new sources of funding by expanding the list of Sustaining and Contributing Sponsors.  With this goal in mind, the Center Director, Charlie Wurtzebach, worked with the Committee to identify potential supporters to begin the outreach campaign.  The results have been promising: the two most recent Sustaining Sponsor acquisitions are Bucksbaum Retail Properties and General Growth Properties.

Bucksbaum Retail Properties is a fully integrated owner and developer of retail real estate. In addition to suburban malls and urban oriented retail developments the company is incorporating office, residential and hospitality uses into its projects. Bucksbaum Retail Properties adapts and reuses existing real estate.  John Bucksbaum, Chief Executive Officer, will serve on the Center's Executive Committee.

General Growth Properties, Inc. is an S&P 500 company headquartered in Chicago and focused exclusively on owning, managing, leasing, and redeveloping high quality retail properties throughout the United States. GGP malls offer a mix of some of the most popular and unique retailers in the world. Some of GGP's unparalleled shopping locales include Ala Moana Center (Honolulu), Tysons Galleria (Washington D.C.), Glendale Galleria (Los Angeles) and Water Tower Place (Chicago).  Shobi Khan, Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer, will serve on the Real Estate Center's Executive Committee.

The Real Estate Center and the Executive Committee welcome the addition of Bucksbaum Retail Properties and General Growth Properties to the Sustaining Sponsor team.

ICSC Foundation Recognizes DePaul Real Estate Student

The ICSC Foundation announced that Lisbeth Flores, an undergraduate real estate major, is the recipient of the Love Scholarship for Diversity award.  This scholarship is named in honor of Gina Love, Esq., who helped create ICSC's annual Diversity Reception.  The $5000 scholarship provides tuition assistance to a junior or senior university student who belongs to an underrepresented minority group and who is an up and coming industry leader.  Ms. Flores will be presented with the award at the ICSC RECon conference hosted in Las Vegas this May.

Bringing Business to the Classroom

The Real Estate Center adds value to classroom exercises by inviting real estate professionals to guest lecture in class.  Their participation lends depth and perspective to class discussion, and students gain the extra benefit of learning from practitioners.

On February 22, 2016 JoAnn McGuinness, COO - Inland Residential Properties Trust, Inc. COO - Inland Real Estate Income Trust, Inc. EVP - Portfolio Strategy - Inland Real Estate Income Trust, Inc., Director - The Inland Group, Inc., made a guest presentation to Dr Wurtzebach's Re 530 Real Estate Investment and Finance class. JoAnn's comments focused on the many facets of real estate investing including, Private REITs, 1031 Exchanges, and Private Placement Programs. Particular emphasis was placed on the importance of conducting thorough due diligence and its impact on investment performance. Additionally, Ms McGuinness discussed the impact of on-line shopping on retail bricks and mortar properties.

Sue Blumberg
, Senior Vice President and Managing Director at Northmarq, guest lectured in Professor Wurtzebach's RE 530, Real Estate Investment and Finance graduate class January 25, 2016. She updated the students on the current state of multi-family mortgage financing and the importance of the federal agencies in the flow of capital to that sector. A mortgage originator and servicer, Northmarq has a book of business of $47 billion. The students asked a variety of questions related to career options in the field and current loan terms.

Bill Conway is an investment banker at JP Morgan focused within the Diversified Industries sector and also a personal real estate investor. He recently on January 12, 2016 came to lecture on valuation techniques in Professor Drabkin's Real Estate 354 class.
His lecture was fascinating to students, focused on valuation methods used to "triangulate" value. There were two "real life" case examples given. One was the valuation of a River North condo project and the other was the sale and valuation process of a building products company.

Students love the engaging and dynamic way he lectures on these "real life examples". Last year he lectured on another "real life" example, this one being a real estate investment in a "Culver's" franchise located in North Dakota. To this day, the students regularly inquire about how the "returns" on Culver's are doing. Bill Conway has lectured in both Real Estate 350 and 354.
