10th Annual REIA/DePaul Summit: Crowdfunding

The Real Estate Center and REIA have been jointly hosting conferences for the past ten years ranging in topics from capital markets to technology's effects on the real estate industry. Always on the cusp of the latest trend, this year's conference focused on Crowdfunding. Today, thanks to the passing of the JOBS Act, groups can now use the Internet for these projects. This conference brought together a group of real estate professionals who are using Crowd Funding to define their own futures and benefit their businesses. Co-Moderators:E. James Keledjian, Chairman/CEO, REIA and Principal, Pathway Senior Living, LLC and Susanne Cannon, Chairman, Department of Real Estate, The Real Estate Center at DePaul University Panelists:Jack Donenfeld, Lawyer and Entrepreneur, Leon I. Faculty Activities
| Crowdfunding has been a popular topic of discussion this fall. Susanne Cannon, Chairman of the Department of Real Estate and the Douglas & Cynthia Crocker Endowed Director of the Center authored a paper called "Disruption, Disintermediation and Real Estate Crowdfunding" that was published in the fall issue of The Real Estate Review (if you would like to request a copy of this paper, email kohare@depaul.edu). As a result of this paper, Margaret McFarland, JD, Director Colvin Institute of Real Estate Development in the School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation at the University of Maryland, invited Cannon to do a guest lecture to a combined class on entrepreneurship and real estate finance.
In addition, the paper captured the attention of the people who organized the Crowdfinance 2014 Redefining Wall Street conference held in New York City on October 16. Cannon moderated a panel called The Growth of Real Estate in Crowdfinance with panelists: Dan Miller, Fundrise; AdaPia d'Errico, Patch of Land; Peter Slagowitz, RealPartner; Haider Nazar, LendZoan; Scott Whaley, REIA & REIAF. A video of the discussion can be found here.
The Crowdfinance events are specifically designed to offer assistance in uncovering new revenue and partnership opportunities in an industry rapidly being transformed. During the event, attendees were given an exclusive introduction to the global crowdfinance ecosystem and interacted with leaders on the forefront of innovation in all facets of the industry.

Cannon Among Top 50 Women in Commercial Real Estate
|
Bisnow hosted an event on November 18 to recognize the women in commercial real estate who have made the biggest impact and who have the most influence in the industry, and Susanne Cannon was on the list of impressive women. The event took place at Trump International Hotel and Tower. Here is the write up that appeared in the event program about Cannon: "In addition to creating one of the premier real estate programs in the Midwest, starting with the Real Estate Center's formation in 2002, Susanne is principal investigator for $7M in grants that have propelled DePaul's Institute for Housing Studies' groundbreaking research on affordable housing and neighborhood development. She calls hers a "checkered past:" married young, finished undergrad in her '30s, finished PhD in her mid-'40s, but each calculated risk paid off. Susanne's leaving DePaul in December for the private sector but plans to stay enmeshed in real estate academia with gigs like a distinguished scholar position and journal editorship. She urges young women interested in real estate to take more math and statistics classes than they think they need, which will spur valuable analytical thinking skills."

Digital Manufacturing, Urban Agriculture and E-Commerce: Driving Innovation in Industrial Real Estate
On Friday, December 12, 2014, from 8:30-11:30am the Real Estate Center and Chaddick Institute are bringing together a panel of experts to discuss the latest trends in re-purposing old industrial real estate for modern innovative uses.
Owners of industrial properties are employing remarkable strategies to transform otherwise vacant spaces into vibrant centers for advanced manufacturing, urban food production, and high tech warehouse and distribution facilities. In Chicago and other cities, century-old industrial buildings once seemingly doomed to demolition are becoming bustling hubs for digital technologies and e-commerce. The tenants include not only Internet giants such as Amazon, but also local brick-and-mortar retailers and package delivery companies responding to the call for same or next day delivery of products ordered online. High value crop production is also taking root as the demand for locally produced, organic food grows. In addition, the prospect of 3D printers producing shoes, auto parts and medications custom manufactured on-premises while consumers wait, has implications for global trade, not to mention local zoning. But a lot of questions surround these new strategies, including: What does all of this mean for the future of industrial real estate? And are these trends sustainable? Can they provide a new economic engine for the industrial heartland and for communities that once provided viable employment? Or are the impediments too great for the movement to spread to the most disadvantaged neighborhoods? What can developers and municipal leaders do to "drive innovation"?
