Tenth Annual REIA/DePaul Summit: Crowdfunding
Back to School Celebration
The Real Estate Center kicked off the 2014/2015 academic school year on September 9 with the Annual Fall Reception.  Faculty member, Charlie Wurtzebach welcomed the crowd consisting of faculty, staff, students, sponsors and alums, and paid tribute to Susanne Cannon, the Department Chairman and Center Director, who will be retiring at the end of December.  Wurtzebach noted the many accomplishments Cannon achieved in her twenty-four years of service to the University including launching the Real Estate Center and creating the curriculum for three real estate degree programs.  He thanked Cannon for her hard work and dedication over the years, congratulated her on behalf of the Center and University for her service and wished her well in retirement.

Following Wurtzebach's tribute, Susanne Cannon announced the academic and travel scholarship recipients for the year.  The scholarship committee selected seventeen students to receive academic scholarships totaling $72,800 in financial support, an increase of more than $17,000 over last year's awards.  In addition, ten students were selected to participate in the travel scholarship program.  The Weitzman family presented the Robert and Howard Weitzman Scholarship, and Sustaining Sponsors, Don Pafford and Gerry Nudo presented the Founding Sponsor scholarships.   This year's scholarship recipients were:

High Honor for Department Chairman and Center Director

The Department of Real Estate and the Real Estate Center congratulate Susanne Cannon who was awarded the Via Sapientiae Award at Academic Convocation on September 5, 2014. The Via Sapientiae Award is the highest academic award that DePaul Univeristy can bestow upon a member of the university community. The award recognizes faculty and staff who have made distinctive and extraordinary contributions to the university throughout their professional lives. Recipients must have contributed a minimum of 15 years of service to the university, and can be nominated at the time of their retirement.

Cannon received a commemorative plaque for this honor which reads:

"Susanne Ethridge Cannon, in your 24 years at DePaul, you helped the Driehaus College of Business become a premier resource for real estate education in the Midwest, building academic programs that are unparalleled for students and the industry.

For your roles as the founding director of the Real Estate Center and chair of the Department of Real Estate,
students lauded you as one who embodies the qualities that drive success: intelligence, common sense and a commitment to excellence. Outside the classroom, you received the Crystal Apple Award for being a mentor to women in the industry. And through extensive work in urban land use issues, you helped drive a major effort to preserve affordable rental housing.

Your broad research agenda spans issues in real estate finance, valuation, corporate governance and land use. And your civic engagement includes two terms as president of the Chicago chapter of Lambda Alpha International, a national land economics  society. As a Weimer fellow of the prestigious Homer Hoyt Advanced Studies Institute, a fellow  of the Real Estate Research Institute, and as chairman of the education committee of the American Real Estate Society, your creativity and tenacity have helped DePaul become synonymous with real estate education in Chicago.

For these reasons and more, we are honored to bestow upon you the Via Sapientiae Award, the university's highest honor for faculty and staff.

Tenth Annual REIA/DePaul Summit: Crowdfunding

Ten years ago, the Real Estate Center partnered with REIA to co-host an annual conference with great success.  This year's topic is utilizing crowdfunding to raise capital for real estate deals.  Since the dawn of the Real Estate profession, the concept of Crowdfunding has been around with communities and companies joining together to develop worthwhile projects. Today, thanks to new governmental regulations, groups can now use the Internet for these projects.  At the Summit, a group of real estate professionals who are using Crowdfunding to define their own futures and benefit their businesses will share their experiences of working through the processes. Come be enlightened by this new phenomenon!

The program is co-moderated by E. James Keledjian, Chairman/CEO, REIA and Principal, Pathway Senior Living, LLC and Susanne Cannon, Chairman, Department of Real Estate and the Douglas and Cynthia Crocker Endowed Director,  the Real Estate Center at DePaul University.
