Spring Anniversary Sale
April 9,10, 11 & 12
5 years in Port Gamble

Port Gamble's 2015 Fiber and Fabric Event is coming right up! April 25 & 26 will be here before you know it! We have some great things planned this year - we have added an additional venue for vendors, so look for new and more fabric and quilting vendors. New to this year's event will be quilts and dolls from the Hoffman 2014 Challenge, wet felting demonstrations and the Featherweight Meet Up.

We are accepting applications for fabric or fiber items for the show through the end of March - so get your application in the mail soon. We will display anything created from fiber or fabric, quilts, stitchery, weaving, knitting, crocheting, fabric dolls and sculptures, wall hangings, felting, rug hooking, wool applique...and you can probably think of more. The show is juried - we have a limited amount of space, but we do our best to squeeze everything in, so don't let the word "juried" scare you into not applying. There will be two Viewers Choice cash awards of $250.00, one for fabric, one for fiber for the winner in each category.  You can download applications here . Applications can be mailed to the address on the application or you can scan them and email them to me.

When I was a novice quilter I used to yearn over Mariner's Compass blocks. The Port Angeles Library had a wonderful big coffee table book of old maps with compass roses and I checked out that book repeatedly trying to envision a plan for turning those beautiful compasses into a quilt. I tried a few blocks using templates, and they were pretty good, but the process was slow! I tried foundation piecing...but it is just not a process I like much. However - now Robin Long has developed rulers that make a Mariner's Compass block a strip-piecing operation really!  Ruler video and class information below.

Piecefully,
Kris

Ruby Short McKim Flower Basket Block of the Month

The Original Flower Basket Quilt was designed and published by Ruby Short McKim beginning in October of 1934. Carried in newspapers across the country, the series included 32 floral designs plus templates for the pieced basket and quilting suggestions. The blocks were 12" square, the finished quilt was 80" x 97" including two 3" borders. Now, 80 years later, this pattern is offered again as a block-of-the month program.
Ruby's Flower Basket Quilt patterns have been remastered by Merrily McKim Tuohey and the instructions have been updated for today's quilters, offering instructions for embroidered flowers with a pieced basket base in addition to Ruby's original instructions for appliqué. The use of crayons to color the embroidered blocks offers an additional option.
The Flower Basket BOM Program participants will receive 32 full sized applique patterns, directions for the pieced basket, a black leather notebook with cover insert, detailed assembly instructions, and a history of Ruby Short McKim and the original McKim Studios.  READ MORE

Mariner's Compass
The compass rose is an old, sometimes, very ornate design element found on compasses and maps, especially nautical charts to indicate directions - North, South, East and West and frequently intermediate directions as well. Take a quick look at a compass rose and you can easily see where the Mariner's Compass Block comes from.

This previously challenging block has been tamed by quilter and ruler designer Robin Long. No more templates or foundation paper piecing. Using her rulers and innovative strip piecing method Mariner's Compass block can be created easily by any quilter with a little bit of rotary cutting experience and a consistent 1/4" seam.  Watch Robin's video below to see the rulers in action.  The rulers are available from our online shop (free shipping in the US) and Robin will be teaching at the shop in March.

All that is in the past now due to Robin Long's innovative strip piecing method and rulers. In this class you will learn to use the Skinny and Fat Robin rulers to make a 12" Mariner's Compass and finish it into a 14" block, which is only one of the 16 sizes that can be made from this ruler.
