I am still looking for quilters and stitchers who are willing to share their red and white quilts and needlework for an upcoming event at the shop in February. We still have room for some smaller quilts and wall hangings as well as smaller needlework pieces (think redwork!). We have some special events planned around the Quilt Red for Women's Heart Health theme and would really like to fill the shop! Contact me if you are willing to lend us your red and white!
The website changes are up and running - you will notice the FREE SHIPPING in the US, and we have also made some not so noticeable changes that has improved the customer registration and checkout processes. Sarah is caught up with posting new fabrics to the shop - so there are lots of new collections to take a look at. Links to a few of the new groups are below.
Classes are being added to both the winter and spring schedules, be sure to take a look at what is new. I am happy to welcome Nancy Chong back to Quilted Strait this spring - Barb Schultz has a new class, and I am also pleased to welcome Pamela Hastings back to the shop. Pamela has not taught for us since we opened and I am so glad that since she has retired from her other job - she can devote more time to her "art and fabric" job!
piecefully, Kris |

Color Scheme Designer We are busy thinking about red at the moment - but I understand that there are lots of other colors outh there. Here is a computer app for coming up with color schemes. This is an older website with lots of advertising around the edges, but is still a great starting point if you are stuck on color. The page made for folks putting together website color schemes, but is perfect for fabric artists as well. You can choose a color for a starting point, and then choose from several color wheel schemes. Each resulting palette consists of pure hues as well as tints, shades and tones of each color.

As we get ready to celebrate "Quilt Red for Women's Heart Health" - we have, of course, been thinking about red- and red and white. The history of red dye is fascinating and full of intrigue, adventure, discovery, greed and riches. I would recommend to you Amy Butler Greenfield's Book "A Perfect Red" as a great read.
A quick synopsis of the history is found in this story from NPR (National Public Radio). Color it Red: A History in Textiles
Here is a little more information about red cochineal dye and the insect that is comes from. This dye is still available today, but is amazingly expensive - if you take a look at the story you will quickly figure out the reason why!
Quilters that have any interest in historical quilts are familiar with the red that comes from madder dyes, also known as "Turkey Red". An although madder dyes are rarely used any more, there are still plenty of reproduction fabrics that are colored to resemble this wonderful rich red.
An ancient dye extracted from shellfish was used to produce dyes that ranged from a bright red to a deep purple. Read a little about how many shellfish it took to dye a yard of fabric and how difficult the process was and you will understand why purple used to be a color reserved for the very royal and very rich!
For a little visual feast - here are a couple of great pinterest sites featuring red and white quilts as well as some wonderful red and white cross stitch and embroidery including some amazing samplers.
