This time of the year I am all about handwork - cross stitch, embroidery and wool applique. And of course any wool applique deserves a decorative stitch or two.
So I am completely content in front of the fire with my wool applique, the sound of rain on the skylight - and a pot of tea , I am currently loving Hot Cinnamon Spice Tea ,(psst, helpful quilting hint - you really, really, want to buy your Harney and Son's teas loose and direct from Harney and Son's, so much yummier) and with my ipad close at hand so I can try any of the multitude of stitches on my Judith Baker Montano apps!
We are ready to get started with our Wool Clubs for 2013. We are continuing the Limited Edition WoolyLady club, and have also added a charm club and a wool thread club!
I now have the information for the Port Gamble 2013 Fibers and Fabric up on the website. The dates this year are May 18 & 19 - more information is available by clicking the image below - and Part II of the newsletter coming soon will have even more information for you! We would love to show off your quilt - and this year's event has two opportunities for quilters to show off their quilts. Like last year - there will be a show for fabric and fiber artists in the Port Gamble Pavilion - entries will be selected from the applications - however, this year we will also have a quilt display in the historic St. Paul's church - open to all quilters. Click the links below to go to our website to download the applications.
Watch for the March newsletter Part II - coming in the next few days with more new classes, more new fabrics, and more information about Fibers and Fabric 2013 at Port Gamble.

Wool Clubs 2013
|
The 2013 Wool Clubs will begin in 2013. This year we have two options for adding to the colors and textures of your "wool on hand" stash.
Club members will receive six bundles during the year - approximately one every other month, beginning in March 2013. Each bundle will contain eight fat sixteenth pieces of color saturated, hand dyed, felted wool (some bundles have 6 fat sixteenth pieces and 1 fat eighth piece for background) and a free pattern designed just for the beautiful wools in each bundle. There will not be any duplications from bundle to bundle. Each bundle will contain enough wool to complete the pattern if desired. Pieces are approximately 6' x 16" each. Although both wool and shipping have gone up since 2012 - we are going to still offer last year's deal. Sign up for the Club before March 5th, 2013 and cost will be $49.50 and free shipping in the US. After February 28th the cost will be $53.85 + shipping.
Wool Charm Club
We are excited to offer a charm club for wool! These little charm packs from in the Patch designs are 5" squares of hand dyed, felted wool. Each charm pack has been dyed with the same color of dye, but each wool is a different texture (think herringbone, plaids and tweeds). Club members will receive one charm pack per month - for 12 months, beginning March 2013. Cost is $7.75 per month plus shipping ($2.00 in US).
Aurifil Lana Wool Thread ClubIf you have not had a chance to use Aurifil wool thread for embellishment, embroidery or wool applique, you are in for a treat! This thread has the lovely hand and look of wool but also has enough acrylic to make it strong enough to use in your sewing machine. Participants in the Lana Thread club will receive four spools of thread each month for $36 plus shipping (2.20 in the US) - and will receive 2 additional spools of thread free with the final shipment - making 50 spools of thread for the year!

There are lots of wonderful wool Applique Quilts that are inspired by American Folk Art. Check out this free pattern for Weather Vane Quilt.
And as always - Quilters on Pinterest have provided a huge assortment of ideas and inspiration. - oh and take a peak here also!
From the 18th Century into the beginning of the 19th Century American quilters were making whole cloth wool quilts - including wool whole cloth quilts, stitching together lengths of cloth and quilting them to make on "whole cloth". Several fine examples of Wool patchwork from the early 19th century can be found in many American Museums and collections.
The Amish were a little later to quilting most of the first Amish quilts from the mid 1800's were wool quilts and the quality of light and integrity of design embodied in these quilts is timeless!
Look at the connections between the Amish quilts in preceding link to this note Wool Modern improv Log Cabin....be sure to click on the link for the creative archive so that you can see the posts that follow the process of the quilt from inspiration to execution.
