Middle School Games Teach Lessons for Life
By Christina Mimms, SAIS

Teamwork, collaboration, and communication top the list of 21st century skills that schools strive to teach students along with the usual subjects of English, history, and math. How schools teach those skills in the classroom vary from one campus to another, but teaching them in a way that students retain and reach for in other aspects of their lives is tantamount to any student-related goals in an independent school.  >>Read more.

The Collapse of Parenting
By Leonard Sax, M.D., Ph.D.
Reviewed by William Carroll, Head of The Westfield School, Perry, GA

The Collapse of Parenting is a compelling and fascinating study of the current state of American parenting. Dr. Sax presents a series of persuasive observations and arguments based on high quality academic research peppered with personal anecdotes. In many ways, the book is a harsh indictment of current parenting and cultural trends. However, the author also includes many specific and practical strategies that should be used by parents who are pushing against the mainstream trends.  >>Read more.

2016 SAIS Institute for Strategic Leadership

Examine the nature of strategic leadership and explore a path for continual growth at the SAIS Institute for Strategic Leadership. This program is open to heads and administrators, and is particularly helpful to those considering headship in the future. Featuring Keith Evans (The Westminster Schools) and David Mahler (Out-of-Door Academy), it is especially useful for leadership teams to attend this institute together. Geoffrey Sudderth, director of the middle and upper school at Deerfield-Windsor School in Albany, GA, attended after his first year in a new position. "I really liked the way that Keith and David challenged us to think about the school business," Sudderth said. "We talked a lot about walking a fence line - looking out and looking in at who you are vs. who you appear to be. We don't always think about market differentiation and how to deliver and communicate our uniqueness to the broader community. Anyone in a leadership role would be well served by attending this program." The Institute for Strategic Leadership will be held June 13-15, 2016 in Atlanta.
