Hello :

A combination of Scottsdale's residential areas, heat, and dampness during our Monsoon season is the perfect environment in which Arizona's desert subterranean termites can thrive. Specifically, they need food, a little moisture, and warmth to survive... and fortunately for them we've got it all!

Desert Subterranean Termites: These nasty, destructive little critters live in colonies comprised of elaborate chambers and tunnels where their populations can reach two million members. Colonies are located in soil, typically under a structure they invade for feeding on cellulose found in wood and dry wall.

Entry to a structure is gained through "mud tubes" constructed of mud and saliva that also serve to protect the creatures from open air and predators These mud-tubes are slender, solidly built, tan in color, range from ¼ to 1 inch in diameter, and will be constructed up, over, and any which way around solid objects in order to reach a cellulose food source. See image of mud tube on left.

Desert subterranean termites range in size from ¼ - 1 inch in length and are often mistaken for flying ants. Their small size notwithstanding, however, they have insatiable appetites and will feast for 36 - 48 hours before returning to the soil for some R & R prior to their next foraging venture. All wood building materials and wallboard in and around the home  provides ideal food sources for these voracious eaters.

Telltale Signs of Termites: Since the desert subterranean termite's primary means of ingress and egress to a structure is through mud tubes looking for them is a good place to start. They can be easily noticed when present along exterior concrete walls or a home's foundation. If they're visible on the walls or foundation of your home, it's highly likely that you are experiencing a subterranean termite infestation.

Mud tubes can also be hidden in generally inaccessible places, such as inside of walls, crawlspaces, cracks in the foundation or behind baseboards, and therein lays the devil. These termites can easily penetrate tiny gaps of 1/32" in concrete flooring or mortar joints in brick walls to access the interior walls, roofing and other structural timbers in a home so there's an abundance of entry points in a home.

Realistically, termites are extremely difficult to spot and are not generally discovered until the structure they've invaded has sustained severe internal damage.
