Hello :

Hope your long 4th weekend was safe, enjoyable, and restful. For the last several years we've gone to the Del Coronado in San Diego with family and friends over the 4th and did so again this year. That's Lexi, Cindy, and yours truly on the right. In the past we were always busy entertaining Lexi which was a full-time job because the hotel offers such a variety of activities. She's 7 now; all grown up and much preferred playing with her friends instead of hanging out with boring old codgers. Well, believe it or not, our feelings weren't too terribly hurt and we enjoyed some quiet time in our rocking chairs sipping iced teas :-)

Tarantula Hawk Tarantula Hawk: The unusual humidity we've been experiencing has brought out a greater than usual number of Tarantula Hawks pictured here. They're the largest species of the wasp family and resemble hummingbirds when viewed from behind. Around humans they're docile unless provoked and then can deliver one of the most painful stings of any insect. If you're in their vicinity be smart and safe: leave immediately because one never knows what can cause provocation. Inexplicably one of our clients was stung in the face by one of these nasty critters so please understand that it can happen from out of the blue.

The name is derived from their habit of eating tarantulas. The female stings and paralyzes the spider then drags it back to the family burrow where she buries it alive with one or more of her eggs. Once hatched the larvae immediately begin feeding on the tarantula until it's consumed. Yeah I know, quite the tasty gourmet meal.

My Vacation: I'm going to be in and out of town for the balance of July recharging these old batteries. Jeremy will be running the show in my absence so please don't hesitate to contact him at the office with any concerns.

Sincerely,

Bret
