Quotable Queer
"It is my dream that by highlighting the deep humanity of trans people's lives in the media, elevating actual trans voices to speak the truth of our lived experiences in ways that don't sensationalize and objectify us, those human voices and stories can be a part of the disruption needed to end the disproportionate injustices that threaten so many trans people's lives, particularly the lives of trans women of color." ~Laverne Cox
QReview
This novel follows a young man in the Air Force during World War II who begins to question his sexuality in an era where queer identities were to be struggled with. Check it out at the Cantu Library!

What Has The Cant Done For You?
|
I am Ali Hayes; "PGP" she. I am a Sexual Health Educator at SHOP. I grew up in Santa Cruz in a communal and queer family and consider myself a fierce ally.
Tell us about your position with SHOP?
My title is Sexual Health Educator. I train and mentor our 10 HIV Peer Test Counselors, Educational
Coordinator and Condom Coop Coordinator, yearly interns, and student volunteers and leaders.
What goals do you have in connecting SHOP with the Cant Queer Center?
My overarching goal is to support all students who utilize the Cant around their sexual health needs (resources, information, safe people to provide support and a place to talk freely.)
Ali is working in close collaboration with the Cantu to launch a monthly HIV testing and sex info program. Stay tuned!

Jan 12th ~ 'That's So Gay! A Game Of LGBTQ Discovery' Board Game Has Educational Aims (and will be arriving at the Cant soon!)
Jan 8th ~ K-12 Transgender Rights Referendum Reaches Next Step
Jan 8th ~ Utah Will Not Recognize Same-Sex Marriages That Have Already Been Performed
Jan 7th ~ Laverne Cox And Carmen Carrera Discuss Transgender Issues On Katie Couric Show. Watch here!

The Cantu's 15+ interns have been intensely busy getting their projects and groups launched, creating publicity to make our amazing programs visible, and extending themselves in so many valuable ways.
Especially since the Cant's professional staffing level has been greatly reduced, our interns have been taking the lead to keep the Cantu open when Director Deb is doing trainings and advocacy work. Our interns do a terrific job of welcoming new students to the Cantu family, and so much more. Remember that we don't card anyone at the door: all queer, questioning, and queer friendly folks are always welcome to hang in our uniquely fabulous space.
We're very excited about two VERY special guests coming to UCSC in Feburary! Trystan Cotten is a trans* author who will be educating our campus about gender confirmation surgeries for trans*men on Thursday and Friday, February 6th and 7th. And Marga Gomez, lesbian comedian extraordinaire, is coming to Porter Dining Hall on Friday, Feb 21st. MOST DEFINITELY MARK YOUR CALENDARS!
