What Has The Cant Done For You?
|
Josue Ayala
Who are you?
My name is Josue Ayala, aka Josh. I was born & raised in LA. My favorite hobbies include listening to music, doing people's makeup, and watching Netflix. You will often see me tabling along with my fellow co-workers around campus so don't be afraid to approach me or anyone here at this center.
What has the Cant done for you?
I walk into the center with the feeling of having a community. A home away from home that I feel safe in and am not judged for my behavior, actions, sexuality, & identity. The Cant has challenged me to think outside the box & become a more open person to many new experiences.

Back from the 4 day Thanksgiving break, I've been hearing many of your stories. Yummy meals with many featuring turkey and some no meat at all! Gong 'home' has meant many things. Many queer students went to their friends' parents' homes. Sometimes students were 'out', sometimes not. Many students gathered together with their chosen families of friends. For some of you, there's a need for support related to what came up during the visit to your families. We encourage you to find a trusted friend, resource center staff person, or counselor to talk with. Stuffing is only for the bird!

Tipping the Velvet
by Sarah Waters
Remake of the 19th Century British Novel with a Queer twist, Waters thrusts you into the life of young girl drawn to the theater, and falls in love with a gender performer best known as Kitty Butler. While the story revolves mostly around the hidden Lesbian culture of London in the early 1880's, the novel dives into what living as a queer individual would be like in an era where homosexual identity was widely regarded as a mental disorder. This exciting work of fiction truly grasps the spirit of exploring sexual and gender identities fully knowing the risks of possible punishments if ever caught.
