August 5, 2013

Greetings!,

In our last e-mail newsletter, we reported that we were in the throes of preparing ACC&D's 5th International Symposium. We're delighted to report that the event was a resounding success, with over 50 speakers and attendees from 16 countries and six continents. Post-symposium survey feedback showed just how much participants appreciated the unique mix of attendees:

"The diversity of perspectives and representation from different disciplines and backgrounds was especially interesting and informative, something not to be found at other conferences."

- Dr. Cheri Asa, Director, AZA Wildlife Contraception Center at the St. Louis Zoo

Several individuals also reported how they left the symposium with great optimism for the positive impact of non-surgical options on animal health and welfare.

"I had a fantastic experience, and I was highly motivated to stay in this field during my future career."  - Kendall Foley, D.V.M. student, Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine

As an optional supplement to the symposium, Ark Sciences held the largest certification training to date  for Zeuterin™ the first FDA-approved injectable sterilant for male dogs. Nineteen veterinary professionals were certified to zinc neuter, or "zeuter," and nearly 60 Portland-area pups were sterilized without surgery!

Providing complete, free-of-charge online proceedings is key to ACC&D's mission of advancing non-surgical options for humane cat and dog population control across the globe.

We hope that you enjoy reviewing (or learning about for the first time!) all that took place at the symposium. Additional information is below. Read on as
well for symposium-inspired articles and blog entries.

NOTEWORTHY HIGHLIGHTS

TAKE A LOOK AT SOME OF OUR SYMPOSIUM'S INSPIRED GUESTS...

The symposium inspired several blog entries and articles about a variety of topics, and we encourage you to take a look. Merritt Clifton, Editor of Animal People, wrote a thoughtful article on the symposium as well as a  symposium-inspired article on a longstanding and long-debated question: does castration really alter male dog behavior?

Peter J. Wolf, community cats expert, founder of Vox Felina, and now cat initiatives analyst at Best Friends Animal Society, wrote this insightful blog entry. He mentions that options for cats are not as far along as those for dogs - he's right, and it's something ACC&D is working hard to change - and provides a synopsis of some advances being made with non-surgical options, as well as complementary work that was showcased at the symposium.

Last but certainly not least, Sy Woon, one of three extraordinary veterinary students  selected for an all-expenses-paid trip to the symposium, wrote this great blog entry on her experience at the event. In late August she'll be presenting to fellow students and faculty at the University of Sydney on the symposium. We can't wait to hear how it goes!
