Great Plains Communications earned a place on the Nebraska Safety Belt Honor Roll and observed an average of 95 percent of employees wearing a seat belt while driving. Distracted Driving: Employer Liability

Reggie Shaw at Norfolk Safe Driving Summit

Reggie Shaw will speak at the Nebraska Safe Driving Summit to be held at the Lifelong Learning Center in Norfolk. Shaw was 19 years old when he caused a crash while texting that killed two men in Utah. Reggie has become a spokesperson for efforts to ban texting while driving. The Safe Driving Summit is a free event open to drivers of all ages. Read more. 

Free Apps for Android Users Eliminate Distractions

Consumer Reports reviewed several smart-phone apps geared at eliminating distractions while driving. These apps allow Android users to block unwanted calls or texts and send an automatic reply to in-coming texts. Read more.

Employer Sued for Distracted Driving Death

The family of a Baton Rouge woman killed by a Pizza Hut delivery driver has filed suit against the driver and Pizza Hut. The lawsuit claims the restaurant chain condones "unsafe driving practices" and accuses Pizza Hut of encouraging drivers to use cellphones and GPS devices while behind the wheel. Read more.

A Red Thumb Reminder for Safe Driving

The Red Thumb Reminder uses red nail polish as a cure for distracted driving. The campaign began in August 2013, when a man decided to paint his thumb red in an effort to stop his own habit of distracted driving. The Red Thumb Reminder now has over 1,800 likes and people posting their own red thumbs on Facebook. Read more.

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month

Each April National Safety Council, Nebraska observes Distracted Driving Awareness Month to educate on the dangers of cell phone use while driving. This year's campaign, "Hands-free is not risk-free", is dedicated to explaining why hands-free devices are still a safety hazard for drivers. This year's campaign includes a video contest to show how drivers using hands-free devices still are cognitively distracted. Winners could receive up to $2,000. Read more.
