Proposed Nebraska Traffic Safety Legislation
The "Nebraska Roadway Safety Act," to be introduced in January by Senator John Harms, updates traffic safety legislation.
The act will:
- Change safety belt law from secondary enforcement to primary and require all passengers to buckle-up including children.
- Change texting law for all drivers from secondary enforcement to primary.
- Change provisions of the Graduated Driver's License Law from secondary enforcement to primary. This includes limiting the number of passengers in the vehicle for young novice drivers, restrictions on night-time driving, and restricting the use of cell phones while driving.
- Ban the use of cell phones by school bus drivers when the vehicle is in motion.
A press conference sponsored by AAA, National Safety Council, Nebraska and the Nebraska Safety Council is scheduled for January 9, 10:30 am, in Capitol Building Room 1524 to introduce the proposed legislation.

Safe Driving Scholarship Competition
Project Yellow Light, a nationwide scholarship contest, is accepting 25 and 55 second videos with a message against distracted driving. The contest is open to challenges high school and college students. Winner will receive a $5,000 prize and the video used in production of a Public Service Announcement. Submissions accepted until March 17, 2014. Read more.

NHTSA Challenges "Significant and Seamless"
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced a "Significant and Seamless" initiative that challenges the automotive industry to make aggressive technological advances in the areas of Seatbelt Interlocks, Driver Alcohol Detection System for Safety (DADSS) and Forward Collision Avoidance and Mitigation (FCAM). Tips to Keep Employees Off the Phone and On the Road
National Safety Council offers these ideas for employee safety:
- Start all conference calls by asking if anyone is calling-in while driving. Excuse them from the call until they are safely parked.
- Include an alternate phone number on your voicemail, so a colleague or administrative assistant can filter your calls while you're driving.
- If an assistant is screening your calls, set your phone to deliver a unique ring tone if there is an urgent call. You will know to park as soon as possible, then call the office.
- Field sales teams could schedule coordinated weekly blocks of time for conference calls when they do not travel, such as a morning or afternoon once or twice a week.
- Conduct parking lot observations for phone and safety belt use. See Nebraska Safety Belt Honor Roll for more information on conducting a workplace observation.
- Adopt a cell phone policy. Download a free sample policy today.
- Get employees involved in creating policy materials. Employees could create campaign slogans and personalized activities appropriate for their office culture. This will encourage buy-in and acceptance of a policy.
