Scripture Text
For Palm Sunday, April 13th

Luke 19: 28-42

 "Adventures in Missing the Point"

Sunday we celebrate Jesus' messianic entrance into the city of Jerusalem. It's a celebration and the people are very exited to see him. They burst into praise and they shout "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in God's name!"  They even lay down their cloaks for Jesus. They wave palm branches and shout joyful songs.

In this midst of this celebration, we find Jesus weeping. Why would Jesus be crying on a day like this? Perhaps they're celebrating the wrong thing. Perhaps they've missed the point. This Palm Sunday, we will be reminded why that journey through the eastern gate of Jerusalem was so significant and what it means for us 2,000 years later.
Celebrating Palm Sunday with Eco-Palms!
Fair Trade Palms

Again this year, Rejoice - in partnership with Lutheran World Relief - celebrates Palm Sunday with Eco-Palms.  Purchasing Eco-Palms helps ensure harvesters were paid fairly for them and that important forests and sustainable livelihoods in the harvesting communities are protected!

Why was the Eco-Palms program started?

Americans purchase as much as $4.5 million worth of palms each year - most for church celebrations. Profits from those sales could do great things for the poor communities in Latin America where the palms are harvested. But via traditional trade channels, very little of that money reaches the palm harvesters and their communities. In the typical palm trade:
  • Large floral export firms encourage over-harvesting: they pay by volume for palms and then throw away large amounts that aren't export quality.
  • Over-harvesting damages forests where the palm plants thrive.
  • Forests are depleted and palm-selling communities lose this important source of income.
How are Eco-Palms different?
  • The palms are gathered and sold in a socially and environmentally just way.
  • Harvesters are paid a fair price per palm based on quality, so they take fewer palms out of the forest, which protects important nature reserves.
  • Community members sort, package and sell the palms themselves - not via middlemen - so more of the money paid for the palms stays with the people who worked the hardest to provide them.
  • Because there is a steady market for the palms, locals are motivated to protect the forests (their source of income), ensuring harvests well into the future.
  • Harvesting communities receive 5-6 times the normal payment per frond.

Help Moms in Need this Mother's Day
Collecting Donations for Mothers in Need at Lazarus House

Rejoice is honored to partner with Two Men And A Truck to help collect donations of care package items for their annual Movers for Moms Project, benefiting mothers at Lazarus House in St. Charles!

First launched in 2007 by Two Men And A Truck, the Movers for Moms program seeks to recognize moms in crisis on Mother's Day by arranging delivery of gifts to women living in local shelters on the holiday weekend. In 2013, more than 116 Two Men And A Truck locations in 30 states across the United States collected more than 210,000 items for women living in shelters on Mother's Day.  Your donation to this project will help local mothers in need at Lazarus House create a better life for themselves and their families.

If you would like to participate and donate to the Movers for Moms Project, bring your item to the donation bin in the narthex at Rejoice by Sunday, May 4th.  Items can include:
  • Shampoo/Conditioner (travel size)
  • Hair styling products (travel size)
  • Nice soaps/shower gels (travel size)
  • Nail polish/remover
  • Lip gloss
  • Comfy socks/slippers
  • Lightweight robes

Calling All Bakers
Baked Goods Needed for Bake Sale

Riverain Point Apartments Annual Spring Bake Sale is Saturday, April 26th from 9:00am to 12:00pm.

Riverain Point Apartments - a service of Lutheran Social Services - provides affordable housing in Batavia for seniors and the disabled.  The Riverain Annual Spring Bake Sale proceeds help services and activities held throughout the year for the Riverain residents. The baked goods have traditionally been donated by the residents. However, we are asking for donations from the community since baking is getting harder for some of the residents to do in such a large quantity.

The residents of Riverain Point Apartments greatly appreciate your consideration in helping us the year.  If you are interested in providing a baked good or helping out with the bake sale, please contact Jo Ann Benson at 630-879-0350, or click here to e-mail.

Upcoming Dates in Summit:

  • April 10th - Summit Thursday, April 10th 7-9pm (note the time change).  This week we will watch the film The Passion of the Christ which is a remarkable look at Holy Week in the life of Jesus. This is a heart wrenching movie that provides a real and in depth look at what Jesus suffered for us. Due to the nature of the reality of Jesus' suffering, beating and death, this film is rated R for graphic violence. Please use discretion when deciding whether or not to join us this evening.
  • April 17th - no Summit (Maundy Thursday)
