Potluck PopUp 

 

It's back! After a successful summer pilot, the Worcester PopUp, 38 Franklin Street, Worcester, returns this fall with a PopUp Creativity Potluck on Friday, September 26th from 5:30-8 p.m. Bring an instrument and participate in open mic entertainment, display personal creative pieces of art, and/or prepare your favorite dish for all to enjoy! The intention is to bring creativity to life through rotating art exhibitions, brilliant performances, music, good food, arts and 3D printing, and inspiring hands on activity. Third Annual Worcester Schubertiad 

 

A Worcester Schubertiad will present its third annual concert of vocal and chamber music at Tuckerman Hall on Saturday, September 27th at 7:30 p.m., created in much the way Franz Schubert and his circle of friends held intimate gatherings at salons and various homes in early nineteenth century Vienna. This year's theme is Schubert and Schumann, featuring vocal and chamber music of Schubert, as well as his younger contemporary, Robert Schumann. The evening will include pianists Malcolm Halliday and Olga Rogach, singers Monica Hatch and Stanley Wilson along with flutist Tracy Kraus and oboist Joseph Halko. Tickets available online or at the door.
Celebrating Siegfried 

 

How do you celebrate a 50 year old dinosaur? With a rocking bash! Join the EcoTarium, 222 Harrington Way, Worcester, on Saturday, September 27th from 11:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. for some Stegosaurus Science Discovery programs, see the finished stegosaurus footprint mosaics from the Siegfried Birth PopUps held through the City throughout the summer and enjoy a cupcake after singing Happy Birthday to the city's favorite dinosaur. Please note, since the Stegosaurus became extinct millions of years ago, Siegfried is not live. He's a statue, commissioned in 1963, built at the Louis Paul Jonas Studios in Hudson, New York and a beloved point of interest at the museum since his arrival in 1964. Birthday celebration included with regular museum admission. Share a Smile 

 

Speaking of beloved Worcester icons, on Thursday, October 2nd celebrate all things Worcester on the 50th Anniversary of the creation of the world famous Worcester original Smiley Face as the 14th Annual Harvey Ball Smile Award is presented to Charles P. Ball at the Worcester Historical Museum, 30 Elm Street, Worcester. Festivities will kick off at 6 p.m. with cocktails/cash bar and a special exhibition 38.6: A Photographic Homage to Worcester, followed by both silent and live auctions, dessert and dancing. Tickets $64 per person. Reservations available online.

The party will continue on Friday, October 3rd with the celebration of World Smile Day, fulfilling the dream of Harvey Ball, creator of the original Smiley Face who established WSD (celebrate annually on the first Friday of October) with the motto - Do an act of kindness, help one person smile! Simply download and print the official Smiley Face and take a selfie or video of yourself saying, "Share a Smile for World Smile Day. Happy 50th Smiley!" Rails Across Russia 

 

As part of its continuing film series on the Russian experience and in conjunction with its current Siberia Imagined and Reimagined photography exhibit, the Museum of Russian Icons, 203 Union Street, Clinton, will present Rails Across Russia on Thursday, September 25th at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. with encore presentations on Saturday, September 27th at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. and Thursday October 9th at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. The film follows a renowned train called The Rossiya as it thunders across Russia - linking the palaces of St. Petersburg and the busy streets of Moscow to the vastness of Siberia. Ride along the Trans-Siberian Railroad's expansive route and explore Russian's varied landscapes and ethnic diversity of its people. Film included with museum admission. Harvest Party

When the sun goes down, the fun heats up as Old Sturbridge Village, 1 Old Sturbridge Village Road, Sturbridge, hosts its Harvest Party on Saturday, September 27th from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Celebrate the fall season with live music, bonfires, dancing and more. The Freeman Farm will be filled with the tantalizing aroma of old-fashioned fall cooking while the Village potters fire up the 1800s style kiln to fire a year's worth of vintage redware pottery. The Mill Pond will be illuminated with fiery displays, lighting the way into the country side. Visit the blacksmith, potter and tinner at their work. NSF seeks local participants

Would you like to increase your skills of innovation, entrepreneurship and creativity? 100 individuals are being sought as participants for a National Science Foundation study with a focus on creative problem solving. Participants will form teams to work towards primary goals of improving access to and interest in alternative transportation (walking, biking, public transit) as well as ancillary benefits including building social movement through new technology, public art, education and civic engagement.

Early to mid-career STEM professionals: engineers, scientists, technology developers, mathematicians - including both academics and individuals working in the non profit and corporate sectors encouraged to apply. Participants who complete the study will receive a $250 stipend and be entered to win listing as sponsor ($1,000 value) for Earth Day at the EcoTarium and 20 passes valid for a year. Around the Common & Not so Common

Preservation Worcester invites you for a guided walking tour around historic Worcester Common on Saturday, September 27th from 10 -11 a.m. You may have taken the self-guided tour on your own, but an interactive live waking tour offers the advantage of a tour guide and the chance to ask questions to see and learn more. Meet at the corner of Salem and Franklin Street, near the Worcester Public Library. Reservations are suggested but not required. in case of rain, tour status will be updated by 9 a.m. online. Admission $5.

On Sunday, October 5th, Preservation Worcester will host its annual Better Than Your Average Yard Sale at its office, 10 Cedar Street, Worcester. Browse and buy unique home improvement items from a treasure trove of 18th, 19th and early 20th century household furnishing and one-of-a-kind architectural salvage. Preview 11 a.m. - noon with $10 donation, free admission noon - 3 p.m.
FemLink Screening

On Saturday, September 27th at 1:30 p.m. ArtsWorcester, 660 Main Street, Worcester, will host a screening of Aggression, a video artwork produced by the Femlink Collective and represented locally by ArtsWorcester member C.M. Judge. FemLink links women video artists around the world and their work to produce video collages, each based on a single theme. Aggression features 24 videos by 24 video artists from 24 countries. Local artisans will fill the field at Fruitlands Museum, 102 Prospect Hill Road, Harvard, on Saturday, September 27th 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. and Sunday, September 28th 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. for the Worcester Center for Crafts 4th Annual Craft Festival. Browse and buy jewelry, photography, pottery, fiber arts, mixed media and more. Event held rain or shine, under the tent. Disappearing Medium

The American Antiquarian Society, 185 Salisbury Street, Worcester, welcomes Meredith L. McGill on Monday, October 6th at 7 p.m. for Disappearing Medium: Poetry and Print nit he Antebellum United States. McGill will explore how we might understand the explosion of mass print as a formative event in the history of American poetry, and how we might look to antebellum poetry as a primary means for taking the measure of the cultural impact of print. Hey Day

Don't miss a day for farm-related demonstrations, exhibits and hands on activities for people of all ages as Mass Audubon Wachusett Meadow, 113 Goodnow Road, Princeton, hosts  its annual Hey Day celebration on Saturday, October 4th from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Enjoy cider pressing, hayrides, canoeing, local produce and home baked goods, mini-maze, farm animals, pumpkin painting, pony rides, live entertainment and much more.
