Cartographic Innovation

In a moment that evokes our our modern times, guest lecturer Susan Schulten will explore how the early nineteenth century represented a new era of visual thinking in Cartographic Innovation in the Early Republic at the American Antiquarian Society, 185 Salisbury Street, Worcester, on Friday, September 12th at 7 p.m. Through innovative maps and charts of the mail, internal improvements, climate, and vegetation, several individuals sought to uncover patterns in the human and natural world, not unlike our own tools used to navigate an increasingly complex, interdependent and data-driven world. Schulten is professor and chair of the History Department at the University of Denver, where she has taught since 1996. In 2010, she was named a Guggenheim Fellow, and in 2013 Mapping the Nation was awarded the Norris and Carol Hundley Prize for historical scholarship. She also contributes regularly to the New York Times' Disunion series, which commemorates the sesquicentennial of the American Civil War. Admission to the talk is free. Night Photography

For the fall Worcester Windows exhibition, the Worcester Alliance of Photography is presenting Night Photography at the Community Gallery of Worcester City Hall, 455 Main Street, Worcester. Night photography challenges photographers to gather sufficient light, often requiring a tripod and a long exposure. Classic night photography typically includes cars, stars or other moving objects streaking light across the image, but other interpretations abound. Color is rich and the world takes on a whole new look as man-made light takes over from the sun. The Worcester Alliance of Photographers is a place where both amateur and professional photographers meet to talk about technical aspects of photography, be create and share ideas. The WAP meets the last Thursday of every month. Preview the exhibit online. Night Photography will be on view through the end of November.
