Everybody in the Boat!
Call it the unofficial start of fall in Central Massachusetts - the Blackstone Canalfest returns to Harding Street at Kelley Square, Worcester, on Saturday, September 6th from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Held to celebrate the history of the Blackstone Canal in Worcester, the plans to recreate it as a cultural amenity, and the ongoing rebirth of the district, don't miss this day long celebration featuring food, music, dance, street performers, children's activities, vendors, horse-and-wagon tours, historical information, craft demonstrations, and even kayak rides on the street! Admission is free and open to all.

Revolution Ready
Did you know that nearly eight months before the American War of Independence began with the battles of Lexington and Concord, some 4,622 militiamen from 37 towns of Worcester County marched down Main Street in Worcester, shut down the crown-controlled county courthouse and effectively overthrew the British authority. On Sunday, September 7th from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. join a consortium of historical and cultural organizations for a day long festival celebrating Worcester County's role in starting the American Revolution. The American Antiquarian Society, 185 Salisbury Street Worcester; Institute Park, just down Salisbury Street, as well as the First Congregational Church, Rural Cemetery, Salisbury Mansion, The Oaks and Tuckerman Hall will be filled with stories, dramatic presentations, children's activities, period craftsmen, colonial militia, interpreters, and a reenactment of the Worcester Revolution itself!
Enjoy entertainment by the Salisbury Singers, Sir Jeremy Bell, the Jolly Rogues Quartet, as well as street musicians. Premiering at the celebration will be an original play, The Chains of Liberty by AAS director of outreach James D. Moran. A complete schedule of the day available online. Pop Finale
Summer is winding down and so too is the activity at the Worcester PopUp, 38 Franklin Street, Worcester. Rounding out a tremendous first summer which has hosted such events as poetry readings, drumming circles, painting workshops, art sales and more, visit the PopUp on Thursday, August 28th between 6-7 p.m. for a complimentary Flamenco class and dance demonstration with Edmy Ortiz of Flamenco Worcester. Then on Saturday, August 30th, also from 6-7 p.m. the Worcester PopUp hosts belly dancing for everyone! The Eve Tribal Fusion Belly Dance Company will present an exciting, fun, family-friendly presentation and workshop where you can learn to belly dance! Comprised of every shape, size, age, ethnicity, eccentricity and shoe size - Tribal Belly Dance encourages you to experience this liberating and fun activity.

Family Fun Days
As Labor Day weekend rings in the unofficial end of summer, enjoy one last summer outing as Old Sturbridge Village hosts Family Fun Days, Saturday, August 30th - Monday, September 1st, 9:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. each day. Play old-fashioned games ranging from baseball to French & English (tug of war). Make a craft, meet oxen in training, and watch a toy fire-balloon flight! Don't miss musket firing demonstrations, a 19th century magic show as well as performances by the Old Sturbridge Village Singers and Old Sturbridge Village Dancers. All children up to age 17 get free admission when accompanied by an adult paying regular price. WOO Card holders save $5 off adult daytime admission

Les Mis
In celebration of their tenth anniversary, WPI Humanities and Arts Music Division and VOX Musical Theatre will present Les Miserables, on stage at Alden Memorial's Great Hall, 100 Institute Road, Worcester, Thursday, September 11th - Saturday, September 13th at 7:30 p.m. Through this story of revolution, learn that there is no substitute for love, hope or dreaming of a brighter tomorrow. Production will feature Kristy Chambrelli directing, John Delorey as music director, with WPI students from all over the country joined by singers from the Worcester Children's Chorus. Ambient Folklore
Here's an exhibit that's definitely for the books! Luis Antonio Fraire, Worcester enthusiast, artist, musician and Sprinkler Factory Gallery manager, has curated a new exhibit for the Worcester Center for Crafts' Krikorian Gallery, 25 Sagamore Road, Worcester, Ambient Folklore. Featuring the work of nine distinctive artists who intend instant visual communication i ntheir work, the exhibition focuses specifically on the communicated narrative, essentially creating an immersive storytelling environment as the viewer goes from work to work, artist to artist. In the contemporary environment, the need for and use of folk traditions persist. Ambient Folklore makes space for new traditions in storytelling to begin, designed for the present and the future in appreciation of the past-all in visual form. The artists shown in the exhibit include Lisa Barthelson, Elizabeth Duffy, Francis "Woody" Woodbridge, Luis Antonio Fraire, Nick Kantarelis, Amy Klausmeyer, Victor Pacheco, Mari Seder, John Havens Thornton, and Pat Coomey Thornton. American classic
The Pousette-Dart Band, led by Jon Pousette-Dart carved a place in the landscape of American music in the 1970s. They were a mainstay of album radio, a favorite on the college circuit, and became one of the busiest touring groups in the US. Catch these legendary musicians - who have performed with such acts as The Byrds, Bonnie Raitt, The Eagles, James Taylor, the J. Geils Band, among many others - one night only at Mechanics Hall, 321 Main Street, Worcester, on Friday, September 5th at 8 p.m. Tickets available online. Partners in Music at Pak
Area families are invited to join the directors and select staff of the Pakachoag Music School of Greater Worcester, 203 Pakachoag Street, Auburn, along with the Worcester Youth Orchestra and the Worcester Children's Chorus for a Partners in Music open house on Tuesday, September 2nd from 6-7:30 p.m. Each organization will have information available regarding its programming, spanning birth to retirement for the upcoming school year. Pakachoag's Suzuki Violin and Cello Program Coordinator along with a Music Together (ages birth through 7 years) faculty member will also be on hand. The Worcester Youth Orchestras will be featuring its new Youth Baroque Orchestra and the Worcester Children's Chorus, it's new Early Singers Class for children in grades 1 to 3. Refreshments will be served, with student musicians providing entertainment. Admission is free. |
Italian Presepe
The Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Art Gallery at the College of the Holy Cross, 1 College Street, Worcester, will host the exhibition The Italian Presepe: Cultural Landscapes of the Soul. The exhibit showcases a collaborative project by Margot Balboni, an independent curator and photographer, and Sarah Stanbury, a medievalist and the Monsignor Murray Professor in the Arts and Humanities in the English department, on an important form of Italian installation art: the nativity scene, or the "presepe".The exhibition opens on Wednesday, September 3rd and will be on view through December 17th. Admission is FREE. An opening reception will be held Thursday, September 18th, 5 - 7 p.m. |
For the Birds
Mass Audubon Broad Meadow Brook Conservation Center and Wildlife Sanctuary, 414 Massasoit Avenue, Worcester, invites you to Friday Morning Birds, Friday, August 27th from 7-9 a.m. Enjoy a leisurely birding experience while helping to document the sanctuary birds over the season. This weekly walk helps confirm which birds are migrating and which are year round residents. Different corners of the sanctuary explored each week - you never know what you'll find! Dog Days
You've heard of the dog days of summer - at Tower Hill Botanic Garden, 11 French Drive, Boylston, celebrate dog days every weekend on their Tails 'n Trails! Every Saturday and Sunday between 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. and on Tuesdays, from 3-5 p.m., families and their favorite pooch can enjoy walking on THBG's dog walking trail which includes a beautiful 1-mile loop past the Wildlife Refuge Pond and Inner Park featuring hundreds of species of trees and plants, as well as a variety of birds.
