Art, Youth & Community Celebration
Don't miss a celebration of art, youth and the community coming together on Friday, August 15th from 4-6 p.m. at the Worcester PopUp, 38 Franklin Street, Worcester, to celebrate the completion of the first downtown mural by renowned artist Caleb Neelon on the nearby Denholm Building located at 484 Main Street. Celebration will also feature works from young artists of the HOPE Coalition - expressing positive messages through their I'm About this Life exhibition. Latin Festival
Things will be hot, hot, hot at the Worcester Common Oval, 455 Main Street, Worcester, on Saturday, August 16th as Centro Las Americas hosts its 2014 Latin American Festival 12 noon - 9 p.m. Don't miss this day long celebration of Latin music, dance and of course food! Local showcase to feature performances by Ritmos Academy, Raices Latin Dance, Matthew Sanchez and Bryan Alvarado leading up to the headliner - Luisito Carrion & Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. Also enjoy children's activities, food vendors and other novelty vendors. Grant writing workshops
The Worcester Arts Council has announced that guidelines and applications for its 2015 local cultural council grant program are now available. Guidelines and applications available for download online. To assist potential applicants, WAC will be hosting two grant writing workshops - the first on Wednesday, August 20th at 6 p.m., Levi Lincoln Conference Room of Worcester City Hall, 455 Main Street, Worcester. Although not required, all potential applicants are strongly encouraged to attend. Workshop is free and open to all. A second workshop is planned for Tuesday, September 23rd, same time and place. In 2014, WAC awarded a total of $88,355 to some 40 Worcester area artists, organizations, and educational institutions. Deadline for submitting grant applications is Wednesday, October 15th.

Worcester Film Works
As summer draws to a close, so too does Worcester Film Works Third Thursday Movies on the Common summer 2014 season. The group's third and final presentation will take place on Thursday, August 21st with a showing of the Disney favorite, Finding Nemo. Take the plunge for some summer fun with Arlin, Dory and the whole cast of underwater friends from down under. Swim your way down to the Worcester Common Oval, 455 Main Street, Worcester, for some live entertainment and food trucks beginning at 6:30 p.m. with the movie to follow at dusk. Caterpillar Lab
As seen on PBS, biologist, photographer and educator Sam Jaffe of the Caterpillar Lab will return to Tower Hill Botanic Garden, 11 French Drive, Boylston, on Saturday, August 23rd 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. for a unique program of these fascinating and beautiful creatures. Enjoy an up close and personal look at these fascinating and beautiful visitors to our backyard gardens! "Caterpillars are uniquely suited for use in natural history education and communicating science," says Jaffe. "These often bizarre creatures grab and hold attention through wonder, surprise, or disgust, and thus give educators a chance to create a myriad of important learning moments and provide opportunities for discovery." Down in the Meadow
What lives in a small meadow, about the length of a football field? MA Audubon Broad Meadow Brook, 414 Massasoit Avenue, Worcester, wants to know and you can help! On Wednesday, August 20th from 1-4 p.m. explore BMB's newest meadow, the Wilson-Rice Farmstead - one of the few remaining in the City and possibly the oldest. In addition to about 100 plants, all sorts of butterflies, dragonflies, mammals, frogs and snakes who use the meadow, this August adventure will be paying close attention to goldenrods, asters and other late bloomers. Learn about the biodiversity of a rare habitat while helping protect it. Intended for ages 8 and up. Bring water and dress for sun and insects. Admission $12 adults, $8 children. Let's go Out
to Lunch!
Before he wow's the masses at the Latin Festival on Saturday, Matthew Sanchez Y Su Orchestra will be turning up the heat at the Out to Lunch Concert Series on Thursday, August 14th at the Worcester Common Oval, 455 Main Street, Worcester. Enjoy some red hot salsa while browsing and buying from a variety of local farmers, food vendors and artisan crafts. Raices Latin Dance Company will perform during a brief intermission. Marketplace opens at 11 a.m., concert runs 12 noon - 2 p.m.
Series wraps up for the season next week, Thursday, August 21st with a not-to-be-missed R&B performance by East Coast Soul, with an intermission performance by the Central Mass Dance Academy. During both the August 14th and August 21st concerts the Planting The Seed Foundation will be on hand collecting donations of school supplies to benefit homeless youth of Worcester.

Summer may be drawing to a close with school buses ready to roll in just a few short weeks, but there's still time to get out and enjoy the splendor of the season right in your own neighborhood! MA Audubon Broad Meadow Brook hosts a series of free Neighborhood Nature programs designed to do just that. On Wednesdays from 1-4 p.m. through August 20th and on Fridays from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. through August 22nd drop in to Elm Park, Highland Street & Park Avenue, Worcester, for crafts, stories and nature walks. On Fridays from 2-5 p.m. through August 22nd, learn about wildlife from canoes at Green Hill Park, Skyline Drive, Worcester. Canoes and life jackets provided, you bring your curiosity! Swimming skills are required, under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Coming up: enjoy an evening of jazz with Jean Mancini Gough on Thursday, August 21st from 5:30-7 p.m. featuring a program of music from the American Songbook. On Friday, August 22nd, from 1-3 p.m. join Celida Allen for a workshop on how to make leather cuff bracelets with recycled materials. Participants are asked to bring a cleaned plastic soda bottle to be used as a mold, leather from a discarded leather coat or purse, and pieces of broken jewelry preferably chains, an inexpensive pair of scissors and a small bottle of tacky glue. Looking ahead, you'll want to save the date for a Flamenco dance class and demonstration with Edmy Ortiz on August 28th; Dinner, Art & Music Night with Miranda's Hearth on August 29th; and learn to belly dance with Eve Tribal Fusion Belly Dance Company on August 30th. The Bard is Back 
The Worcester Shakespeare Festival has settled in to its new home - Alternatives' Inc. Community Plaza and GB & Lexi Singh Performance Center, 50 & 60 Douglas Road, Whitinsville. Summer season continues Thursdays - Sundays through August 24th with performances of the William Shakespeare classics, The Merry Wives of Windsor in repertory with The Winter's Tale. Performances at 8 p.m. Thursday - Saturday, 2 p.m. matinees on Sundays. Merry Wives to be staged outdoors on the Riverside Piazza with Winter's Tale performed inside the Singh Theatre.
