Start your weekend early - head Out to Lunch on the Worcester Common Oval on Thursday! On Thursday, July 3rd don't miss the Hip Swayers - a quality, local, good time, get up and dance band that combines tight rhythms, searing solos and soulful harmonies in an eclectic mix of originals and covers, encompassing straight ahead roots rock with a country flavor! Farmers market, artisan and food vendors open at 11 a.m. at the Worcester Common Oval, 455 Main Street, Worcester (right behind Worcester City Hall). Main stage talent performs 12 noon - 2 p.m. As a special treat this week, visit with some live alpacas from Plain View Farm in Hubbardston!

Giddy Up!

You haven't experienced Worcester until you've experienced Kelley Square in a horse drawn wagon! The Canal District Wagon Tours return for their 6th summer on Thursday, July 3rd! Hour-long horse drawn wagon tours through the Canal District share the story of how the Blackstone Canal sparked the Industrial Revolution transforming Worcester from a rural town to a bustling city. Costumed interpreters throughout the route share tales of famous Worcester historical figures. Tours step off from 192 Harding Street, Worcester from 5-7 p.m. every Thursday evening through August 21st. Admission is free, donations gladly accepted. This program supported in part by a grant from the Worcester Arts Council.
Call for images 

 

Preservation Worcester invites you to participate in a juried photography exhibition of Worcester's built landscape. Professional and amateur photographers of all ages are invited to submit digital images of Worcester (buildings, monuments, statues, bridges and architectural elements and details) taken in the past two years. The show will be juried by James A. Welu, Director Emeritus, Worcester Art Museum. The entry deadline is August 1, 2014. Additional details available online.
Sweet sounds of summer 

 

The Massachusetts Symphony Orchestra will continue its 64th consecutive season of free, outdoor summer concerts in Worcester's Institute Park, corner of Salisbury Street and Park Avenue, in Worcester, on Sunday, July 13th at 7 p.m. The Classics to Broadway performance will feature soprano Jane Shivick and clarinetist John Fullam as vocal and instrumental soloists. The evening will also include a dedication ceremony naming the concert shell at Institute Park, the Levenson Concert Stage in tribute to Harry and Madelyn Levenson who founded the concert series in 1951. Bring your own lawn chair or blanket. Admission is free and open to the public. Donations gladly accepted.
 
MSO will return to Institute Park on Sunday, July 20th at 7 p.m., when conducted by Alton Baggett, they will present a concert of Disney Music, including selections from the Disney blockbuster "Frozen." Vocal soloists will be Karen Hastie-Wilson and Scott Wilson. Admission is again free and open to all.

Jazz at Sunset Returns

Enjoy a very special Independence Day Concert on Friday, July 4th as Dan Gabel and The Abeltones perform authentic big band music of the 1930s and 40s at Jazz at Sunset, SAC Park, 438 Lake Street, Shrewsbury. Hosted by the American Big Band Preservation Society, put some pomp into your holiday with this authentic 18-piece big band that looks and sounds like those that thrilled American audiences in the days of old! Bring your patriotic spirit, a picnic meal, blanket and/or lawn chair. Tickets available online, by calling 877 340-2263 and at the gate. Catch the Spirit

Catch the summer spirit - the Park Spirit that is! Park Spirit's beloved Elm Park Summer Concert Series returns on Thursday, July 10th kicking things off with Beatles night, featuring Union Jack! Concerts continue every Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the picturesque park through August 14th. Upcoming performances include: The Milford Big Jazz Machine Orchestra (20 piece swing band) on July 17th; Mychael David with the Help Wanted Band (country) on July 24th; legendary rhythm & blues performer Toni-Lynn Washington on July 31st; The Love Dogs (swinging soul) on August 7th; with Little Red and the Riders (jump blues) rounding out the series on August 14th. All concerts are FREE and open to the public. Bring you own lawn chair or blanket and enjoy the spirit of the summer!

The Worcester Cultural Coalition is partnering with MASSCreative and the Create the Vote Coalition to ensure that a thriving arts, culture and creative sector is part of the discussion and ebate during the 2014 gubernatorial election. It's time to make our voices heard! Please join us on Tuesday, July 15th from 6-7:30 p.m. for a Candidates Forum on Arts, Culture and Creativity at The Hanover Theatre, 2 Southbridge Street, Worcester. The forum will be a signature event of the campaign where the candidates for governor will be together to discuss and debate the issues of the statewide creative community. Emmy award wining arts & entertainment critic Joyce Kulhawik will moderate. Admission is free and open to all. Advanced RSVP requested, however. By working together we can make sure that the next governor of Massachusetts is a true champion of the arts, culture and the creative economy!

Now and Then

The Worcester County Poetry Association along with the Stanley Kunitz Boyhood Home are pleased to present the second of four planned summer workshops examining Stanley Kunitz poems on Saturday, July 12th from 1-5 p.m. The workshop, Here and There, Now and then in Kunitz's Poetry - and Yours, will be facilitated by author, poet and professor Susan Elizabeth Sweeney at the Kunitz House, 4 Woodford Street, Worcester. The workshop will encourage participants to move through poetic space and time, discussion poems such as The Testing Tree and Haley's Comet while exploring movement, architectural detail and urgency in their own writing. Marking Mileage

Looking to get some distance under your belt? Want some exercise with walking buddies? Need a kick to get started? Join MA Audubon Broad Meadow Brook, 414 Massasoit Avenue, Worcester, for a naturalist-led walk every Tuesday from 10 - 11:30 a.m. through July 15th. Each week the walk will go progressively farther through the sanctuary. Bring water, appropriate footwear, sun and insect protection. Ages 18 and older. Summer sing

Enjoy an evening of singing with a friendly group this summer. The Master Singers of Worcester will host a Summer Sing on Tuesday, July 8th 7-9 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, 19 Church Road, Shrewsbury. Under the direction of Malcolm Halliday and accompanied by Brett Maguire participants will study Haydn's Missa Brevis Sancti Joannis de Deo and Schubrert's Mass in G and then sing through them with local soloists. Legendary Livingston

The legendary Livingston Taylor will perform at Mechanics Hall, 321 Main Street, Worcester, on Friday, July 11th at 8 p.m. Having recorded his first record at 18, Taylor has enjoyed a forty-year career including performing, songwriting, and teaching. A natural performer, Taylor is known for peppering his shows with personal stories, anecdotes and ineffable warmth. His relaxed on-stage presence belies the depth of his musical knowledge, and fans might just as often be treated to a classic Gershwin or something from the best of Broadway. Tickets are available online or by calling 508 752-0888. Language of a Dream

Language of a Dream, a multi-media exhibition featuring works by Art Krauss, opens at the Sprinkler Factory Gallery, 38 Harlow Street, Worcester, on Saturday, July 5th. Krauss, a long time professor of art and media in New England who's work is greatly influenced and inspired by his decade of travels to Nova Scotia and Atlantic Canada. Exhibit also features guest artists Willow Ross, Clark Britton and Anne Condon Giancola. Special opening reception will be held on Saturday, July 12th 5-9 p.m. Evening will include Krazy Kat Jazz Jam with Michael Chasse and 2 Worlds/1 Heart dance performance. Get ready for a yellow brick road like none other as Calliope Productions, Inc. presents the Broadway musical The Wiz - on stage at 150 Main Street, Boylston, Tuesday, July 15th - Saturday, July 19th, 7:30 p.m. show daily with additional 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday. Don't miss this tale of 21st century Dorothy's adventures in the Land of Oz, set to a wide range of contemporary music. Ever dreamed of running away with the circus as a clown? Got a kiddo that's the true ham of the family? Check out Flippo's Clown Camp hosted by the West Boylston Arts Foundation at Major Edwards Elementary School, 70 Crescent Street, West Boylston, Tuesday, July 15th - Thursday, July 17th, 10 a.m. - 12 noon each day. Flippo teaches kids and adults alike how to juggle, spin plates, create balloon sculptures, perform balancing tricks and an array of other magic tricks sure to amaze! Great for kids from eight to eighty! Pre-registration required. Cost just $45 for all three days. Hurry before they can't fit any more clowns in the car!
