All Play and No Work
An ordinary day at the office turns into cutthroat chaos when the boss announces he'll be promoting one of his employees by the end of the day in Calliope Production's world premiere comedy production, All Play and No Work, on stage Thursday, June 12th - Saturday, June 14th and again Friday, June 20th and Saturday, June 21st, with all performances at 7:30 p.m. at the theatre, located at 150 Main Street, Boylston. Competitive brown-nosing and undermining hijinks ensue, made even more out of control with the arrival of a foreign stranger, an IRS agent and a homeless person. Will the most deserving cubicle-dweller earn the coveted promotion or will it go to someone who treats a day on the job as "all play and no work"? Tickets can be reserved online or by calling the box office at 508 869-6887.

On the Trail
Based on his newly published book, On the Trail of the Heathen School: Local, American & World History, unraveling the forgotten story of a special school for 'heathen youth' brought to New England in the early 19th century from all corners of the earth, award-winning author John Demos will speak at the American Antiquarian Society, 185 Salisbury Street, Worcester, on Tuesday, June 10th at 7 p.m. Located in the little town of Cornwall, Connecticut, this uniquely fashioned institution embodied an early version of what is now called American exceptionalism - convert them, educate them, civilize them, then send them back to found similar projects in their respective homelands. After a seemingly brilliant beginning, however, the plans ran afoul of racism when some of the heathen students courted local women. Demos will reflect on the process of his research, including his time as a distinguished scholar at AAS and his visits to places central to the story. Admission is free and open to all. WOO Card holders can swipe for Double WOO points. Copies of the book signed by the author will be available for purchase after the lecture.

Making the Connection
The Education Committee of the Worcester Cultural Coalition serves to foster relations and programming between the Worcester Public Schools and Worcester Cultural Coalition member organizations. The cultural collaboration promotes the development of grade level immersive programs called Leaps, providing intensive and interdisciplinary learning experiences tapping the riches of cultural organizations to support key elements of curriculum. A shining example of this education in action model can be found each Thursday throughout the summer in the city's historic Canal District.
Now in its sixth year, Worcester's Blackstone Canal Horse and Wagon Tours project originated from a school history project at South High School and over the past five years, the idea has grown into a Worcester summer mainstay, scheduling hour-long tours of Worcester's Canal District, which are held each Thursday night during July and August. Tours for summer 2014 will begin on Thursday, July 3rd and run through Thursday, August 21st. The tours are entirely student run. They tell the farm to factory story of how the Blackstone Canal sparked the Industrial Revolution and the immigrants that made it happen, transforming Worcester from a rural town into the second largest city in the Commonwealth. The tours are held on two wagons pulled by teams of Belgian Draft horses. Each wagon has two main tour guides who present the historical information and five costumed interpreters who give original, 2-3 minute impersonations of famous Worcester historical figures, adding depth and intrigue.
