Meow Wow!
In keeping with tradition, once again, the Burncoat High School Dance Department will mesmerize audiences with this year's production: A Dance Interpretation of CATS, on stage at The Hanover Theatre, 2 Southbridge Street, Worcester, TONIGHT, Wednesday, May 21st at 7 p.m. The theme tells the story of a group of cats called the Jellicles and the night they make what is known as "The Jellicle Choice." JOMP Gala
The Joy of Music Youth Orchestra, conducted by Tim Terranella, will celebrate its 16th anniversary on Wednesday, May 21st with a Spring Gala 7-9 p.m. at Mechanics Hall, 321 Main Street, Worcester. The concert will also introduce an exciting new ensemble of strings and wings - Sinfonietta, conducted by Ralph Metcalf. JOMP Jazz Ensembles will greet the audience and perform during the reception. Free WAM
The Worcester Art Museum, 55 Salisbury Street, Worcester, will offer free admission on Thursday, May 22nd, 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. as part of the Association of Art Museum Directors' Art Museum Day, coinciding with International Museum Day. More than 170 other AAMD member museums across North America participated in the event last year. Art Museum Day emphasizes the essential role that art museums play in our community, highlighting the value of visual arts in society while providing new opportunities for audiences to participate in the wide-ranging programs available. This year WAM will present Nude Drawing in the Galleries from 2-5 p.m., an ongoing moderated program that runs every Thursday at the museum. WAM's model takes center stage among the old master collection. Visitors can try their hand at drawing a live nude model with the guidance of expert faculty. Drawing supplies provided free of charge. Visitors can also take time to visit the the recently opened Knights! exhibition, offering a new look at the John Woodman Higgins Collection of arms and armor. Rock with Shir Ba'Emek
The Worcester Jewish Community Center invites you to enjoy a rousing concert featuring Shir Ba'Emek, the internationally acclaimed, award winning singing ensemble from Afula-Gilboa, Israel. The concert will be on Thursday, May 22nd at 7 p.m. at Temple Emanuel Sinai, 280 May Street, Worcester, in commemoration of Israel's 66th birthday. Admission is free and open to the public. Summer Shear
The sheep at Old Sturbridge Village, 1 Old Sturbridge Village Road, Sturbridge, will get their annual "haircuts" during Wool Days throughout Memorial Day weekend, Saturday, May 24th - Monday, May 26th, 9:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. Throughout the weekend farmers will demonstrate 1830s style sheep shearing while costumed historians demonstrate the entire wool textile process, from scouring and dyeing the wool to spinning, knitting and weaving. Don't miss a special demonstration of border collies herding sheep on Saturday, May 24th. An antique sock knitting machine and the process of spinning cotton will be demonstrated on both Saturday and Monday, while the ancient art of wool felting will be demonstrated on Sunday and Monday. Making Worcester Pop

The Worcester Cultural Coalition and City of Worcester's Cultural Development office, in partnership with Bay State Savings Bank and the Worcester Business Development Corporation are working with a group of creative artists and entrepreneurs including, Revolution Institute and Technocopia, to create Worcester PopUp. The intention is to bring creativity to life through rotating art exhibitions, brilliant performances, music, good food, arts and 3D printing, and inspiring hands-on activity. The PopUp is slated to be open June 19th thru the end of August, located at 28 Franklin Street, Worcester. We are inviting a selection of artists and entrepreneurs to help us pop up - and share your art, sell your delicious locavore food, host a creative workshop or present a wild staged reading or concert. My Poland, My Love
The All Saints Concert Series is pleased to welcome Pakachoag Music School of Greater Worcester faculty member Vladimir Odinokikh for a performance of some of his favorite selections by Chopin at All Saints Church, 10 Irving Street, Worcester, on Saturday, May 31st 3:30 - 5:30 p.m. Selections for the program span Chopin's own career as composer and pianist, inclduing works first played by Vladimir as a gifted child to the very challenging Sonata in B Minor learned as a teen and last performed by Vladimi while enrolled as a conservatory student in Moscow. Sifting the Uneven Archive
Tess Taylor will recount how a residency at the American Antiquarian Society, 185 Salisbury Street, Worcester, assisted her as she researched and wrote her latest book of poems, The Forage House, on Thursday, May 29th at 7 p.m. Previously published in The Atlantic, Boston Review, Harvard Review and The New Yorker, among others, Taylor currently reviews poetry for NPR's All Things Considered and teaches writing at the University of California Berkeley. Her poems layer oral histories, documents and folk songs to craft an exploration of her ancestors - a mix of New England missionaries and Southern slave owners, including Thomas Jefferson. Her poems are as much about the imperfect material of family stories as they are about the politically charged material of history. Admission to the lecture is free and open to the public. Tiptoe through the Treetops
Anyone can tiptoe through the tulips, how about through treetops? The EcoTarium's, 222 Harrington Way, Worcester, opens its Tree Canopy Walkway on Saturday, May 24th. Imagine being 40 feet high in the trees, harnessed and clipped to a series of swinging bridges spanning some 150 feet. What will you see and hear? How will it feel to be walking through the trees or speeding toward the forest floor? Tree Canopy open Saturdays 10:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. and Sundays, 12:30 p.m. - 4 p.m. through June 22nd. Cost $10 plus museum admission. All children must be 5 or older and accompanied by an adult. Ages 12 and older can participate without a chaperone.
Also opening at the EcoTarium this weekend, bubbles are back! The seasonal outdoor exhibit gives kids - and kids at heart - a chance to make loads and loads of sudsy bubbles in all shapes and sizes. Experiment with how they are formed, the colors they produce and their amazing properties! Bubbles!, located on the Sundial Plaza will be open daily throughout the summer. Free with museum admission. Farewell to the Tsar
Your final chance to view The Tsars' Cabinet: Two Hundred Years of Russian Decorative Arts under the Romanovs is this weekend at the Museum of Russian Icons, 203 Prospect Street, Clinton. Museum registrar Laura Garrity will lead visitors on an hour long farewell tour on Thursday, May 22nd 4:30-5:30 p.m. An encore tour will be held on Saturday, May 24th at 1:30 p.m. From the time of Peter the Great in early eighteenth century to that of Nicholas II in the early twentieth century, many of the more than 230 objects in the exhibition were designed for public or private use of the tsars or other Romanovs. The farewell tour will highlight the best examples of the exhibit and discuss how they fit in to the history of Russian Tsars. Fine Finale 
Music Worcester will once again close its season with a performance by the Worcester Chorus, showcasing the group's excellence - a fitting tribute to the choral ensemble which has been part of Music Worcester since its founding in 1858. Artistic director Chris Shepard will lead the chorus with renowned Ian Watson accompanying on organ at St. Paul's Cathedral, 38 High Street, Worcester, on Friday, May 30th at 8 p.m. Program will include Rutter Gloria, Pinham Sinfonia Sacra, and Vaughan Williams All Hail the Power among other works. Making the LEAP
As the school year winds down, many districts will celebrate with end of season field trips. The Worcester Public Schools are fortunate to enjoy a strong relationship with its cultural community, so much so that the Worcester Educational Development Foundation in partnership with the Worcester Cultural Coalition, is committed to engaging all Worcester Public Schools in the arts, culture and interpretive sciences. With generous support from the Alden Family Trust and other businesses and organizations, students are actively engaged in cultural programming throughout greater Worcester.
A collaboration between MA Audubon Broad Meadow Brook (BMB) and the EcoTarium, for example, present Real Math, Real Science to all sixth graders in the Worcester Public Schools. The three-day experience begins with BMB and EcoTarium staff going into the classroom together to present the pre-visit topic and cover various skills necessary for the field trip. The next day students go on a field trip - half visiting BMB and half to the EcoTarium. The groups have 1 1/2 - 2 hours to complete a scientific inquiry and gather data. The the groups switch sites, eat lunch and again conduct an experiment before returning to school. On day three, BMB and EcoTarium staff arrive for the post visit to determine what happened using the data collected on the field trip. Learn more about Real Math, Real Science. |
