Brown Bags are Back!


Need a surefire sign that spring really is right around the corner (despite any weather forecasts to the contrary!)? The return of the Spring Brown Bag Concert Series! Celebrating its 30th year, the series sponsored by WICN Public Radio at Mechanics Hall, 321 Main Street, Worcester, opens with a bang - TODAY, March 12th with a performance by the U.S. Navy Band Northeast Pops Ensemble at 12 noon. One of 13 official Navy bands, its serves military and civilian communities throughout the Northeastern United States, providing a wide spectrum of musical entertainment including traditional sounds of military marching band, the swing of jazz, chamber music or the contemporary and popular music.

 

Series will continue every Wednesday through April 2nd. Subsequent concerts will feature the Berklee College of Music's Anthony Fung Quintet on March 19th; Metro West Thump on March 26th; rounding out the series with Harvard University's Sunday Jazz Band performing a tribute to Herbie Hancock on April 2nd. That's a WRAP 

 

Join the West Boylston Arts Foundation for it's 3rd Annual WRAP - Wachusett Reservoir Art Path - to be held on Saturday, March 15th from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. at various locations throughout Boylston, Clinton and West Boylston. The self-guided tour of artists and artisans open studios and galleries in Wachusett Reservoir area towns will include sports artist Mark Waitkus, live music at the Gallery of African Art, reduced admission at the Museum of Russian Icons, and more. Admission is free. Additional details and a map of participating venues available online. Since its founding in 2007 in response to budget cuts which threatened to eliminate art and music classes in the West Boylston school system, WBAF had donated approximately $72,000 to band instructional programs, visual arts scholarships and various arts education programs.
Almost Ides of March 

 

The Worcester County Poetry Association will host a special Almost Ides of March Double Birthday Street Beat on Thursday, March 13th from 7-9 p.m. at Vasa Hall, 1 Ekman Street, Worcester honoring the birthdays of Street Beat host Anne Lucci and that of featured poet Joe Fusco Jr.'s mother. Fusco, who just released a full-length collection of poetry and prose last year is sure make the evening loud and funny with his irreverent tales - who else can make the experience of having a colonoscopy funny? Admission is FREE and open to all. Coffee and refreshments - including Lucci family favorite Chocolate Mocha Cake - will be served.
Secrets & Stories 

 

Built in 1849, the gothic castle of the Oread Institute used to tower over Worcester's Main South from its hilltop perch. Founded by reformist and statesman Eli Thayer, the Institute was one of the first women's colleges in America. Join the Friends of Hope Cemetery for their annual winter lecture - Secrets and Stories of the Oread Castle and the Life of Eli Thayer - on Sunday, March 16th at 3 p.m. at the Worcester Historical Museum, 30 Elm Street, Worcester. Preservation Worcester docent Jan Parent will discuss the history of the Oread Institute Castle while historian and Interim Director of Government & Community Relations at the College of the Holy Cross John Anderson will explore the life of Eli Thayer. Exuberant ECCO 

 

Music Worcester Inc. will host the exuberant East Coast Chamber Orchestra at Tuckerman Hall, 10 Tuckerman Street, Worcester on Saturday, March 15th at 8 p.m. This self-conducted orchestra thrives on the pure joy and camaraderie of classical music making. The program for this, their Worcester debut, demonstrates its efforts to define the future of orchestras. Sleeping Beauty Kids

The classic fairy tale Sleeping Beauty will come to life as Apple Tree Arts stages the enchanting Disney musical Sleeping Beauty Kids on Friday and Saturday, March 14th and 15th at 7 p.m. Grafton Middle School, 22 Providence Road, Grafton. Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for seniors and students, free for children 4 and under. Tickets will be sold at the door. The lively musical tells the story of Princess Aurora, who has been cursed by evil sorceress Maleficent, that she will prick her finger on a spindle and die on her sixteenth birthday.

The Music at Trinity Series will host Kyle Bertulli at the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 73 Lancaster Street, Worcester, for an organ concert on Sunday, March 16th at 3 p.m. A Milford, MA native who has studied with such notable organists as Timothy Smith, Patricia Snyder, Debra LeBrun and Brett Maguire, Bertulli will perform a program of works by J.S. Bach, Felix Mendelssohn, Josef Rheinberger and Alexandre Guilmant. Admission is FREE, free-will donation appreciated.

Piano Trio

The Joy of Music Program, 1 Gorham Street, Worcester, will host a Faculty Recital featuring the talented New England Piano Trio on Sunday, March 16th at 4 p.m. Performance will feature Ning Tien, cello; Kristjon Imperio, piano, and Aaron Packard, violin. Celtic Celebration


Old Sturbridge Village, 1 Old Strubridge Village Road, Sturbridge, will celebrate St. Patrick's Day with an Irish-themed weekend of song, stories and history during its Celtic Celebration Weekend, Saturday & Sunday, March 15th & 16th, 9:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. The two-day celebration of all things Irish will include historical and contemporary activities and entertainment. Learn Irish step dancing and hear Irish musicians explain the difference between jigs and reels as well as the Irish experience through song. Museum exhibits and historians will explain what caused the wave of Irish immigration in the 19th century and what life was like for Irish families after they first arrived in America.

 

Kids Free Winter Weekends continues through March 30th with free daytime admission for children accompanied by one adult paying full price, regular admission. In conjunction with the Celtic Weekend, a special Full Gael Concert will be held on Saturday, March 15th at 7 p.m. Tickets available online or at the door, $12 per person. Four Centuries of Piano

Pianist Constantine Finehouse has performed extensively across the United Sates, Europe and Russia. his newest album with cellist Sebastian Baverstam features the universally- admired Brahms Sonata No. 1 for piano and cello as well as several new works in the High Romantic style by Boston composer Tony Schemmer. Kiss and tell


Playwright Lenell Moise will be in residence at Clark University for February and March, leading a series of monologue workshops with undergraduate students culminating in a presentation, Black Voices, in the Little Center Experimental Theatre on Sunday, March 16th at 7 p.m., produced by Black Student Union and the Caribbean African Student Association, with additional support from the Office of Diversity and Inclusion as well as Clark's Theatre program. Admission is free and open to the public.

 

Moise is a Boston based poet, actress and playwright born in Port-au-Prince Haiti. She performs at colleges throughout the country, presenting work about race, gender, class, immigration and sexuality. Her spoken word CD Madivinez won the 2007 Patchwork Majority Radio Album Award for Best Solo Album, among countless other awards she has won for her acting, film writing, essays, poems and most recently her debut book, Haiti Glass, a collection of verse and prose.

 

On Wednesday, March 19th, running through Sunday, March 23rd, Moise's new play, K.I.S.S.I.N.G. will be presented at Clark's Little Center, 950 Main Street, Worcester, 7:30 p.m. Set in a socioeconomically diverse city, the play follows several young adults as they try to make sense of their economic inheritances, spiritual traditions and emotional baggage. A Knight to Remember

You're in for an exciting night - or entire weekend, actually - when the Worcester Art Museum, 55 Salisbury Street, Worcester, debuts its new Knights exhibition on Friday, March nth 7-11 p.m. The gala opening will feature performances, music theatrics and a truly star-studded extravaganza! The Peacemakers
 

 

The Peacemakers, a new work by Welsh composer Karl Jenkins was first premiered at Carnegie Hall in March 2012. On Sunday, March 30th at 4 p.m. the Master Singers of Worcester will proudly perform the piece's Central Massachusetts premiere, joined by other area choirs, the Worcester Children's Orchestra and the WPI Orchestra at Mechanics Hall, 321 Main Street, Worcester. The texts are drawn from the utterances of the various peacemakers including Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela, and the Dalai Lama of Tibet, as well as poets and scriptural passages. The program will include music for brass ensemble and choruses, and will feature the Hook Organ, celebrating its 150th year at Mechanics Hall. Tickets available online or by calling 508-752-0888.
