Worcester Center for Crafts, 25 Sagamore Road, Worcester, invites you to get up close and personal with some of the most impressive ceramic talents in the Northeast at their Pottery Invitational 2014, opening Friday, April 11th and running through Sunday, April 13th. The ceramic celebration kicks off with a special Benefit Preview on Friday, 5:30-6:30 p.m. with a special talk with Worcester Art Museum Director Emeritus James Welu, then open to the public 6:30-8:30 p.m. Open Saturday 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Sunday, 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. with Pop-up Artist Talks as well as floral and food presentations throughout the weekend. Left of Center, Like It's 1979
ArtsWorcester, 660 Main Street, Worcester, will host an opening reception for Left of Center: Ceramic Work on Friday, April 11th, 6- 8 p.m. featuring the works of Sarah Williams, a 2013 Worcester Arts Council Fellow who has exhibited in both the Bay Area and throughout Massachusetts. Inspired partly by Art Deco traditions and Hungarian folk art, the objects in the exhibit are caught in a unique tension between the purity of the functional form and the deadly sins many of them represent. Reception will also feature the opening for Like It's 1979, an exhibit celebrating artwork inspired by and created in the year AW was founded. Hard-edge abstract, low brow art, portraiture, an homage to Thiebaud, and even a few tributes to the Aurora itself are all part of the exhibit. Admission is free. Celebrate ceramics all over town on Friday, April 11th with "One Ticket/Two Shows," a collaboration between the Worcester Center for Crafts and ArtsWorcester. The Space Between
The Sprinkler Factory Gallery, 38 Harlow Street, Worcester, is pleased to welcome for their third show together multidisciplinary artists Christine Croteau, Joanne Holtje, Ted Lilley, Philip Marshall and Mark Spencer for The Space Between, an exhibit exploring their interpretations of what happens in the space between: between events, between each other, between objects, between mental states. Brew Woo
Worcester's original craft beer festival, Brew Woo returns for its fourth year to the DCU Center, 50 Foster Street, Worcester, on Saturday, April 19th with two sessions, 1-4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. The event will feature an assortment of breweries offering tastings of craft beers and local brews, along with live music, and tasty food vendors. People's Kitchen of the Citizen, 1 Exchange Street, Worcester will host a
Wine Dinner Tuesday - Featuring Middleton Family Wines on Tuesday, April 22nd at 7 p.m. The Middleton family originally established their business in the lumber industry. They took their knowledge of the land and passion for wine and ventured into the wine industry. They've established three wineries, two in Washington State and one in Paso Robles, CA with wines ranging from entry-level to high-end. They're able to grow many varietals due to their various locations and we'll be trying wines from the three wineries: Buried Cane, Clayhouse and Cadaretta. Rich man, poor man
American Antiquarian Society, 185 Salisbury Street, Worcester, will host noted Harvard University librarian Kenneth Carpenter on Thursday, April 10th from 7- 9 p.m. for a lecture about The Incredible Journey of Franklin's Way to Wealth, exploring how Benjamin Franklin's Way to Wealth, untitled preface to Poor Richard's Almanac for 1758, gradually spread around the world eventually being published in twenty-six languages in well over a thousand appearances. Franklin's homage to hard work and frugality was issued for a variety of audiences, from elite to peasants and servants, ranging from newspapers to advice manuals and even school books. Public Art: Allen Court Art Alley
New Garden Park, in conjunction with the City of Worcester's Cultural Development Office, will host an informational meeting about an RFP for two new mural installations for 20 Franklin Street facade on Wednesday, April 16th from 5:30-7:30 p.m., 3rd Floor of Worcester City Hall, 455 Main Street, Worcester. Artist Susan Champeny will facilitate the discussion and members of the Public Art Working Group will also share information about other exciting public art initiatives in the city. The Old Neighborhood
Thomas Doughton, senior lecture for Interdisciplinary and Special Studies at the College of the Holy Cross, will discuss the development and unique history of Worcester's black neighborhood, Laurel/Clayton, and its eventual loss due the urban renewal efforts of the 1960s, at the Worcester Historical Museum, 30 Elm Street, Worcester, on Thursday, April 24th from 7-8:30 p.m. The program is part of the Bondage to Belonging lecture series on the regional African American experience in Worcester County. Lecture included with museum admission. Time to Time Warp!
Worcester County Light Opera Company, 21 Grandview Avenue, Worcester, will wrap up its current season with a lively production of Richard O'Brien's The Rocky Horror Show, on stage Friday, April 25th - Sunday, May 11th. A humorous tribute to the science fiction and horror B movies of the late 1940s through early 1970s, the musical tells the story of a newly engaged couple getting caught in a storm and coming to the home of a mad transvestite scientist unveiling his new creation, a muscle man named Rocky Horror.
