Global Encounters
With its newest exhibition, Global Encounters in Early America, the Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Art Gallery, 1 College Street, Worcester, asks what did early Americans know about the rest of the world and how did interactions with other cultures make an impact on American arts? The exhibition, which includes maps, atlases, engravings and book illustrations drawn from the unparalleled collection of the American Antiquarian Society (shown here, Carel Allard Atlas minor. Amsterdam, 1696. Gift of Abbott Lawrence, 1848. Courtesy AAS) along with American decorative arts from significant regional collections including the Worcester Historical Museum and Old Sturbridge Village, focuses primarily on the emergence of direct trade with China, India and the rest of Asia after the American revolution.
Exhibit on view through April 6th, gallery open 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday - Friday, 2 -5 p.m. Saturday & Sunday. Admission to the gallery is free and open to the public. Global Encounters will be accompanied by a diverse offering of public and academic programs that explore the visual representation of early American perceptions of global geographies, cultures, arts and economies. Help bluebirds by building nestboxes from pre-cut kits a Mass Audubon Broad Meadow Brook Wildlife Sanctuary, 414 Massasoit Avenue, Worcester, on Saturday, March 1st between 1:30-3 p.m., Build a Bluebird House Workshop. (Houses are also suitable for other small cavity nesting birds such as black-capped chickadees, tree swallows and white-breasted nuthatches). Power of the Patron
The Worcester Educational Development Foundation (WEDF) will host a benefit concert on Thursday, February 27th at Mechanics Hall, 321 Main Street, Worcester, to benefit the Paul M. Gervais Memorial Scholarship Fund. The Fund was founded in memory of well-known and admired patron of the arts Paul M. Gervais. In continuing his goal of serving the community, fostering a love of music and supporting talent for countless promising musicians, the fund will offer scholarships to assist young musicians of the Worcester Public Schools access and develop their gift of music and support additional music endeavors in the WPS. The concert will feature musical performances by Good Old War with special guests Toy Soldiers and The Lawsuits. VIP Reception starts at 5:30 p.m., general admission at 6:30 p.m. Tickets available online or by calling 508 752-0888. The community is invited to join in letting Paul's melody and his legacy resonate on in our hearts and linger in this community forever. |
Peter and the Wolf A perennial favorite for children of all ages, Peter and the Wolf is an excellent introduction to classical music. The Worcester Chamber Music Society will present a Free Family Concert at Mechanics Hall, 321 Main Street, Worcester, at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 2nd. Also on the program, Thomas and His Imagination by local composer Serena Cleary. Crafty Carnival Day
The Worcester Center for Crafts, 25 Sagamore Road, Worcester, invites you to the culmination of its Carnaval-inspired festivities with Carnival Day on Saturday, March 1st from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. This final DIY celebration of Carnival promises hands-on fun for all ages with the creation of personalized shoe box mini-floats, the world's largest Mardi Gras beads with local artist Susan Champeny, mask making, krewe fashions and much, much more! Also get a taste of the local Carnival traditions from around the world with great music, food and fun! And be sure to take advantage of free tours of the ¡Carnaval! display every Saturday throughout the exhibition lead by Worcester State University students and community members who grew up celebrating the tradition of Carnival.
Through videos, photographs, hands-on interactives, carnival crafts, masks and costumes, the Carnaval exhibit invites you to journey around the world to celebrate Carnival. Venice, New Orleans, Basel (Switzerland), Trinidad-Tobago, Recife (Brazil) and more are stops on your exploration of how creative play and community combine. Although a Roman Catholic custom, Carnival is celebrated the world round with masquerade balls, parades, and more-and with so much flashing fashion and fun to be had, it's not hard to see why. Carnaval de Canal Is every-beady ready? The Canal District Alliance and the Canal District Business Association will host their 3rd annual Carnaval de Canal - A Mardi Gras Party throughout Worcester's Canal District on "Fat Tuesday" March 4th. The event will kick off at 6 p.m. and run at establishments throughout the district until the close of business and will feature promotional giveaways, fun contests, specials and tastings,and much more!
