Flora in Winter continues Friday, January 24th - Sunday, January 26th with special demonstrations, tours a concert and more. Highlights are sure to include: Interpretive Challenge Class Demonstration: A Floral Joust, Lords & Ladies on Friday, January 24th from 3-4:30 p.m. where two ladies and two lords will craft spontaneous floral designs inspired by the Wall at WAM: Robert & Shana ParkeHarrison, without knowing beforehand what floral materials or contain they will be using and must complete the arrangement within the alloted time. On Sunday, January 26th between 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Origami Flowers for Kids workshops followed by a special concert in the museum's Renaissance Court featuring the Shrewsbury High School's Women's Choir and the Master Singers to Go. The Attack - story of a Palestinian surgeon's desperate search for truth following his wife's apparent involvement with a deadly suicide bombing, Saturday, January 18th at 7:30 p.m. at St. John's High School, Ryken Center, Shrewsbury; Fill the Void - an intimate insider's look into the ultra-Orthodox Hasidic community's traditional practice of matchmaking, Tuesday, January 21st at 7 p.m. at the Williows at Worcester Great Room; Nicky's Family - true story of "Britain's Schindler", who organized the rescue of 669 Czech children, most them Jewish, just before the outbreak of World War II, Saturday, January 25th at 7:30 p.m. at St. John's High School; Besa: The Promise - tales of Albanian families, many Muslim, who rescued Jews during World War II, Sunday, January 26th at 2 p.m. at Cuvilly Auditorium at Notre Dame Academy, Worcester, with a discussion following the film with Rezarta Reso, a native of Tirana, Albania who immigrated to Worcester in 1995; and concluding with The Zigzag Kid - coming of age tale with a dose of romance on Tuesday, January 28th at 7 p.m. at the Willows at Worcester. Sing Song Sing-a-long In honor of MLK Weekend, the Salisbury Singers will host a special Community Sing-a-long of African-American spirituals on Sunday, January 19th 3-5 p.m. at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 73 Lancaster Street, Worcester. It is a chance for all who love this traditional music to come and sing some favorites, such as "Deep River," "Swing Low Sweet Chariot, "Were You There," and other well-known spirituals. Mum Bett to celebrate MLK
at OSV
Old Sturbridge Village, 1 Old Sturbridge Village Road, Sturbridge, will feature storyteller and museum educator Tammy Denease portraying Mum Bett during the village's celebration of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Monday, January 20th. As part of its ongoing Kids Free on Winter Weekends promotion, the village will be offering free admission to all children 17 and under who are accompanied by an adult paying full price on the holiday. Elizabeth "Mum Bett" Freeman, a young illiterate slave woman won her freedom in court in 1781 in a landmark case that became the precedent for a 1783 decision that ended slavery statewide. In addition to Mum Bett, OSV will feature portrayals of Abby Kelley, a 19th century abolitionist, and William Lloyd Garrison, a founder of the American Anti-Slavery Society. Winter activities at OSV also include sleigh rides, old-fashioned sledding, exploring historic buildings, engaging with OSV interpreters and much more. For the winter, the village is open 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Tuesday - Sunday, and on all Monday holidays. |
Las Marthas
Dating from the aftermath of the Spanish-American War, the annual debutante ball in Laredo, Texas is unlike any other. The festival lasts an entire month and coincides with George Washington's birthday. For more than a century the city's coming-out celebrations have involved intricate paeans to America's colonial past. N-Cite Media invites you to an advanced screening of Las Marthas at the Worcester Public Library, 3 Salem Square, Worcester, on Tuesday, January 21st at 7 p.m. The film follows two Mexican American girls carrying this gilded tradition on their young shoulders during a time of economic uncertainty and political tension over immigration. Admission is FREE and open to all. Project funded in part by the Worcester Arts Council. |

Animals Without Passports
Be the first in New England to see Back To The Moon For Good, premiering in the Alden Digital Planetarium at the EcoTarium, 222 Harrington Way, Worcester, on Saturday and Sunday, January 18th & 19th! This Google Lunar XPRIZE show, narrated by Tim Allen, chronicles teams around the world competing for the largest incentivized prize in history, by landing a robotic spacecraft on the moon for the first time in more than 40 years. Opening Saturday, January 25th at the EcoTarium, explore Animals Without Passports, a new exhibit which follows the humpback what's migration between North Atlantic feeding grounds off Massachusetts and the Caribbean breeding grounds. Bela & his banjo

Secret Symbolism The Museum of Russian Icons, 203 Union Street, Clinton, invites you to decode color in Russian Icons with its newest exhibition, Secret Symbolism, now on view through March 1st. Understanding the connotation of the palette of colors typically used in icon 'writing' cultivates a deeper understanding of the saints and legends a painting portrays. Visitors can discover how various colors and tints reveal and augment the meaning of these sacred paintings, ranging from the 15th through 19th centuries. With its collection of more than 550 Russian icons, MoRI boasts the largest of its kind in North America, and one of the largest private collections outside of Russia. Winter Warm up Come warm your toes at faculty at the Pakachoag Music School of Greater Worcester, 203 Pakachoag Street, Auburn, heat up the great hall with music on Saturday, February 1st at 2 p.m. Featuring strings and winds, and playing something for everyone from Baroque to 20th Century. An array of instruments including Cello, Flute, Flugel Horn, the Dobson Pipe Organ, Violin and Piano will be featured. A number of our newer faculty members will be featured and we'll be acknowledging faculty member Janeen Baker for 25 years of Service. Admission is FREE. Donations gladly accepted. 2014 WAC Grant Recipients Congratulations to the recipients of funding for the 2014 Worcester Arts Council LCC grant program. WAC awarded a total of $88,355 to some 40 Worcester area artists, organizations, and educational institutions. The 2014 allocation includes two $5,000 Artist Fellowships, awarded to individuals to assist in the funding of their endeavors in the arts, humanities and interpretative sciences. 2014 Fellow are noted glass and metal sculptor Gale Scott and art/science installation artist Lauren Monroe. The Worcester Arts Council is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. A complete list of recipients for 2014 can be found online. From public art projects, student workshops, community celebrations and more - 2014 is shaping up to be a highly creative year! |
