WAC annouces 2014 grant recipients
Diverse organizations & artists to receive funds to support cultural vitality
  

 

Worcester, MA - The Worcester Arts Council (WAC) has announced the recipients of funding for the 2014 granting cycle. WAC awarded a total of $88,355 to 40 Worcester area artists, organizations, and educational institutions. The 2014 allocation includes two $5,000 Artist Fellowships, awarded to individuals to assist in the funding of their endeavorsin the arts, humanities, and interpretative sciences.  The 2014 WAC Fellows are noted glass and metal sculptor Gale Scott and art/science installation artist Lauren Monroe.

"The Worcester Arts Council worked diligently to select recipients based on the priorities put forth through the help of the community's' input," explained Tina Zlody, Worcester Arts Council Chair. "WAC is thrilled to be able to support these noteworthy projects that illustrate the vibrant cultural community that can be found throughout Worcester. These projects and their success will play a vital and important role in enhancing the strength of our community through art and creative expression."

 

Projects to be funded through the Worcester Arts Council for 2014 include several public art projects - Canal District Alliance Marketplace Mural at Crompton, Newbury Street mural in the Crown Hill Local Historic District, and Allen Court supported by New Garden Park. Additionally funds will support such projects as the EcoTarium's Pop-Up Siegfried Tour marking the 50th anniversary of their beloved dinosaur; Worcester Public Schools students workshops and gallery visits to the Cantor Art Gallery at Holy Cross; One Circle, an arts & leadership collaborative between the Latino Institute, Worcester Youth Center, and Worcester Center for Crafts; World Refugee Celebration in June highlighting food, craft, music, and dance from some of the many refugee populations that now call Worcester home; Worcester Chamber Music Society's Free Family Concert; the 2nd Annual Worcester Symphonic Project uniting high school, collegiate, and professional musicians; and many others.

 

Worcester Arts Council selected a wide variety of grant recipients ranging from arts education, children's programs, collaborative projects which promote diversity, public art, music/performing arts, and visual arts. WAC's nine members reviewed applications in the fall during a series of meetings conducted to evaluate the overall quality of the proposed programs, their public benefit, and viability. The Worcester Arts Council is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.
