As Worcester's Main South become one of the city's most elegant residential districts during the second half of the 19th century, handsome churches in a variety of styles were built all along Main Street. Preservation Worcester invites you to learn about some of the city's finest churches while enjoying the architecture of the 1855 Norman Romanesque former Main Street Baptist Church at the Emmanuel Baptist Church, 717 Main Street, Worcester, on Wednesday, April 3rd from 5:30-7:30 p.m. One of Worcester's oldest religious buildings and the city's only remaining example of this style, this church boasts a historic significance for its association with Worcester educator and nationally recognized abolitionist Eli Thayer. Admission to the presentation is FREE and open to the public.

Local Artist Video Project
 

 

WCCA TV 13, 415 Main Street, Worcester, is looking for youth ages 14-21 to participate in a course where they will learn how to make a high quality video that promotes Worcester artists. A certificate will be given at the completion of the training. Course begins April 1st and will run Mondays and Fridays, 3:30-5:30 p.m. through May 24th. There is no cost to participate. However, space is limited so call Joseph at 508 755-1880 to register now! This program supported in part by a grant from the Worcester Arts Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.
Latin Film Fest
 

 

Centros Las Americas will host its 18th Annual Latino Film Festival Tuesday, April 2nd - Sunday, April 7th with showings at Cinema 320 at Clark University, 950 Main Street, Worcester and at Seelos Theatre at College of the Holy Cross, 1 College Street, Worcester. This year's festival offers five feature films ranging from comedic dramas to horror and even science fiction - all show in Spanish with English subtitles. Complete film schedule as well as trailers for each of the featured films available online. Admission just $6 general admission, $4 students and seniors.
Into the Woods 

 

Follow the cast of characters from several Brother's Grimm fairy tales as they make wishes and follow quests to see where their wishes take them as Worcester State University's Music, Visual & Performing Arts Department presents the Steven Sondheim musical Into the Woods, on stage at the WSU Sullivan Auditorium, 486 Chandler Street, Worcester, daily at 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 4th - Saturday, April 6th with special 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, April 7th. Delightful and scintilating twists to Cinderella, Jack of the beanstalk fame, Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood and more! Tickets $10 seniors and students, $15 general admission.
Premier Potters 

 

The Worcester Center for Crafts, 25 Sagamore Road, Worcester, will host its Pottery Invitational Show and Sale from Friday, April 5th - Sunday, April 7th. The show and sale will feature twenty-two nationally recognized ceramic artists gathering to exhibit their work and to demonstrate their varying techniques. On both Saturday and Sunday many of the participating artists will also be hosting live demonstrations. "Having potters demonstrating their techniques for the public is a unique privilege and a cherished part of the Craft Center's identity," said Executive Director Honee Hess.
 
Admission to the show is FREE and open to the public Friday, April 5th from 5:30-8:30 p.m., Saturday, April 6th from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. and on Sunday, April 7th from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. WOO Card holders can swipe for Double WOO points. Public WOO Card

The Third Annual Hearts for the Arts Auction to benefit the Worcester Educational Development Foundation's mini-grant program will be held on Friday, April 6th at Coral Seafood on Shrewsbury Street, Worcester. Auction viewing and bidding on the hand crafted hearts begins at 4:30 p.m. with live entertainment by the Silverbacks - whose members have performed with Albatross, American Standard, Joe Cocker, and the Tina Turner Band - slated to begin at 6:30 p.m. Auction to conclude at 7:30 p.m. Admission just $20. Light fare included.
Farewell, Bon Voyage

The community is welcomed to enjoy an evening of Irish and American music as the All Saints Music Series hosts a farewell concert of the choirs of All Saints and the girls choir of Notre Dame Academy at Notre Dame Academy, 425 Salisbury Street, Worcester, on Saturday, April 6th from 7:30-9 p.m. - on the eve of the group's cultural mission to Ireland. An Evening in Paris

Enjoy a trip to Paris, compliments of the Pakachoag Music School of Greater Worcester, 203 Pakachoag Street, Auburn, which will host a music cabaret - An Evening in Paris - on Saturday, April 6th with two seatings, 1 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The musical showcase will highlight a time and locale brimming with modernity and elegance - 1920's Paris! Curious about our fine feathered friends that have at long last returned to Central Massachusetts? The Mass Audubon Broad Meadow Brook Conservation Center and Wildlife Sanctuary, 414 Massasoit Avenue, Worcester, invites you to join them for Friday Morning Bird Walks, weekly 7 - 9 a.m. through June 7th. Enjoy a leisurely birding experience while helping document the sanctuary birds over the season. Explore different corners of the sanctuary each week, birders of all levels welcome! Admission $5. On the First Saturday of every month (Saturday, April 6th) the center welcomes volunteers interested in a few hours of fresh air, fun and fulfillment! Together with Mass Audubon staff, volunteers put up signs and markers, look for wildlife tracks, pick up branches, fill bird feeders, tend the gardens and distribute program information.  Russian Folk

The Museum of Russian Icons, 203 Union Street, Clinton, will host a concert by the Zolotoj Plyos Folk Ensemble on Saturday, April 6th at 3 p.m. (Please note change of venue, event originally scheduled for Clinton High School.) Zolotoj Plyos, founded by Alexander Solovov, Elena Sadina and Sergei Grachev in Saratov, Russion in 1994, boasts a repertoire which includes folk songs and instrumental pieces from various parts of Russian, Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova and Georgia. The three are graduates of the Saratov State Conservatory and together have won prizes at All-Russian and international folk competitions. Tickets are $18 and are available online. Louder than a Bomb

Worcester's Community Radio Station, WCUW, 910 Main Street, Worcester, will be hosting Youth Poetry Slam Final Qualifiers on Sunday, April 7th, 7-9 p.m. Are you between the ages of 13-19? Do you have a passion for words? Do you want to see some truly out-of-this-world performance poetry? Come on down, bring a piece to read in the open mic, or bring two poems under 3 minutes in length to slam! Slam poetry can be moving, funny and deadly serious, sometimes all in the same poem. Admission is FREE.
Lunch Break Yoga

The Southeast Asian Coalition of Central Massachusetts, 484 Main Street, Suite 400, Worcester, invites you to take a lunch break and experience Kundalini Yoga, Thursdays, 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. through May 2nd. Each class includes breathwork, a physical yoga set, a deep relaxation and a meditation. All welcome - beginners, experienced yogis, and those more comfortable in a chair - this yoga can be modified for any body. Drop-ins welcome. Bandboxes by You

A bandbox is usually a cylindrical box of cardboard or thin wood for holding light articles of attire. These unique boxes were historically covered with scraps of wallpaper and used as decorative storage. On Wednesday, April 10th from noon - 1:30 p.m. the Worcester Historical Museum, 30 Elm Street, Worcester, invites you to Crafternoons: Bandboxes. Decoupage your own bandbox while curator Holly Izard discusses the use of bandboxes in the 19th century. All supplies included. Space is limited. Admission $5. WAC to honor grant recipients

The Worcester Arts Council will hold its annual Arts Grant Reception from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 11th at the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Art Gallery on the campus of the College of the Holy Cross, 1 College Street, Worcester. The event will recognize the awarding of forty-one grants totaling over $86,000 to artists and cultural organizations throughout the city. Highlighting this year's list of recipients are two Worcester-based artists - sculptor/ceramist Sarah Williams and jazz trombonist and composer Jeff Galindo, each of whom received a $5,000 Fellowship Award from the council. Reaching youth thru art

The Worcester Youth Center, in collaboration with YouthReach and the Worcester Art Museum, runs YouthReach Arts - an experiential youth arts program developed to engage urban adolescents in neighborhood problem-solving and planning. The grup identified substance abuse and addiction as problems within the Worcester community. A new exhibit opening on Thursday, April 11th from 5-7 p.m. at the Davis Art Gallery, 44 Portland Street, Worcester, features the work of these young artists, honors their views and advocates for community engagement in overcoming these obstacles. Admission to the opening is FREE. Exhibition will run through May 13, 2013.
With breath 
and bow

Hailed as a group with style, imagination and chops, the Worcester Chamber Music Society is a musical ensemble founded locally, performing locally and intimately with Worcester County audiences. Don't miss one of three upcoming opportunities to see them perform, With Breath and Bow, Friday, April 12th at 7:30 p.m. at the Congregational Church of Grafton; Saturday, April 13th at 7:30 p.m. at the First Unitarian Church of Worcester; and Sunday, April 21st at 4 p.m. at the Unitarian Church of Harvard. The concert will feature a celebration of song, lyricism and virtuosity - the lush romantic world of Brahms contrasted by the elegant craft of Walter Piston's Flute Quintet, and concluding with one of the crowning jewels of chamber music - Mozart's String Quintet in C major.
