Brown Bags are back!
Despite Mother Nature's apparent desired attempts to delay its arrival, the calendar says today is the first day of spring and so spring it is! Why not celebrate at the Spring Brown Bag Concert Series which returns to Mechanics Hall, 321 Main Street, Worcester, Wednesdays at noon through April 3rd. Don't miss New England's ultimate R&B dance band - the Nu-Cullers Dance Band - playing Motown, Jazz, funk, reggae and today's hottest hits TODAY, Wednesday, March 20th.
Series continues on Wednesday, March 27th with jazz vocalist Anne Walsh, a Grammy nominated Worcester native who now makes her home on the West Coast. Then enjoy hot jazz and cool tunes when the Worcester Jazz Orchestra brings its Big Band sound to Mechanics Hall on Wednesday, April 3rd.

Remembering Denholms
Preservation Worcester invites you to take a step back in time and turn your thoughts to the City of Worcester's former favorite department store - Denholms! Author Christopher Sawyer will present a spirited, illustrated talk along with Patricia Wolf, co-author of Denholms: The Story of Worcester's Premier Department Store at the Denholm Building, 484 Main Street, Worcester, at 5:30 p.m. TODAY, March 20th. The event will begin with a look at the store's moderne style exterior and a tour of the old store's display windows, followed by a ride on the original escalator to the third floor to learn more about the history of the store, see historic photos of the people that made it a success along with other Denholms memorabilia. Copy of the book will be available for purchase. Admission is FREE and open to the public. |

A grab for power cloaked in piety and religion? A misuse of religion in the avoidance of personal responsibility? People so caught up in their own excesses they don't notice what's going on until it's too late? Sound all too familiar? Clark University's ClarkArts invites you enjoy Jean Baptiste Poquelin Moliere's Tartuffe, still so timely yet written in 1669. Don't miss this tale of a con man, Tartuffe, who deceives a wealthy gentleman, Orgon, then tries to seduce his wife, Elmire, ultimately getting Orgon to sign over the family estate. Orgon's family, friends and servants all try to unmask Tartuffe. Hey diddle, diddle, don't miss this lady and her fiddle! Music Worcester welcomes Natalie MacMaster and her band to Mechanics Hall, 321 Main Street, Worcester, on Friday, March 22nd at 8 p.m. This internationally known and acclaimed fiddler from Cape Breton in Canada, has shared the stage with the likes of The Chieftains, Pavarotti, Santana, Paul Simon, Faith Hill and dozens of symphony orchestras. She's also known for step-dancing while playing her fiddle - something audiences have been known to join in so moved and inspired by her performances! Barcelona to Brazil
The Joy of Music Program will host a special benefit concert, From Barcelona to Brazil, on Friday, March 22nd at 8 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 111 Park Avenue, Worcester. Concert will feature Kathleen Corcoran, guitar; Tracy Kraus, flute; along with JOMP alumni Lucas Apostoleris, guitar; and Rachel Rynick, mezzo-soprano. Suggested donation $25, $10 students. Don't miss the Exhibition Opening and Artist Reception for the Worcester Art Museum's, 55 Salisbury Street, Worcester, 10th mural for the Wall at WAM series on Saturday, March 23rd from 5-7 p.m. The collaborative husband and wife team of Robert and Shana ParkeHarrison were commissioned to create the 67-foot, second story expanse. Their staged photography involves performance, sculptural props, elaborate backdrops and digital technology. Admission to the opening is FREE and open to the public. StoryCorps explore, Why Worcester? The New England Archivists (NEA) will celebrate their 40th anniversary with a three-day meeting on the campus of the College of the Holy Cross, March 21st - 23rd. The meeting will offer a variety of special activities including sessions on regional collaborative projects, notable keynote speakers, and a partnership with local Worcester community groups - including the City's Cultural Development Office, Worcester Historical Museum, Worcester Women's Oral History Project and Lutheran Social Services - to collect local oral histories of Worcester's vibrant and diverse immigrant community through nationally recognized StoryCorps. The project, Why Worcester?, is generously funded by Mass Humanities, invites two participants into an intimate recording space to ask one another questions and reveal the story behind their journey to Worcester. As a companion program, NEA is offering a complimentary public oral history workshop on Saturday, March 23rd from 2-4 p.m. in the Hogan Center at Holy Cross. Conducted by the Worcester Women's History Project, the workshop will teach the basic skills of recording and preserving family stories. Admission is FREE and open to the public. |

A surefire sign of spring - Mass Audubon Broad Meadow Brook Conservation Center and Wildlife Sanctuary, 414 Massasoit Avenue, Worcester, will soon be hosting its first walk of the year! On Friday, March 29th from 7-9 a.m. enjoy Friday Morning Birds, a leisurly birding experience to help document the sanctuary birds over the season. Held weekly, the walk helps confirm which birds are migrating and which are year-round reisdnets. Explore different corners of the sanctuary each week - you'll never know what you'll find! WCPA seeks entries for Poetry Contest The Worcester County Poetry Association is now accepting entries for its 2013 Annual Poetry contest: The Frank O'Hara Prize. Up for grabs is a $100 first prize, $50 second prize, $25 third prize along with honorable mentions. The contest is open to employees, students and residents of Worcester County. All winning poems will be published in the upcoming edition of The Worcester Review. Winners will be invited to meet this year's judge, author Alice Fogel, and read their work at an award ceremony that kicks off the fall programming for WCPA. All submissions must be the original work of the entrant, in English and not previously published. Further guidelines available online. Deadline to submit entries is Monday, April 1st. |

Centros Las Americas will host its 18th Annual Latino Film Festival Tuesday, April 2nd - Sunday, April 7th at Cinema 320 at Clark University, 950 Main Street, Worcester and at Seelos Theatre at College of the Holy Cross, 1 College Street, Worcester. This year's festival offers five feature films ranging from comedic dramas, to horror and even science fiction.
The festival opens with
- Mi Primera Boda (My First Wedding) on Tuesday, April 2nd at 7:30 p.m. at Cinema 320. Comedic tale of a Jewish-born groom and Catholic-born bride and the politics of the proverbial 'Big Day'.
- Juan De los Muertos (Juan of the Dead) Thursday, April 4th at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 7th at 4 p.m., both showings at Cinema 320. Comedic-horror about a 40-year old Cuban faced with violent, supernatural beings
- Mal Dio para Pescar (Bad Day to Go Fishing) Saturday, April 6th at 1 p.m. at Cinema 320. Comedic-dram about an oddball duo of a now washed up former strongest-man-on-earth and his crafty manager who stage bogus wrestling matches in small South American towns
- Un Cuento Chino (Chinese Take-Out) Saturday, April 6th at 7:30 p.m. at Cinema 320. Drama The story of Roberto who, in a series of unlikely events, is brought together with Chinese speaking Jun, who has come to Buenos Aires in search of his only living relative
- Sleep Dealer Saturday, April 6th at 4 p.m. at Seelos Theatre at Holy Cross (FREE admission) and Sunday, April 7th at 1 p.m. at Cinema 320 Science fiction which explores the concept of a world connected by technology but divided by its borders. A future in which borders are sealed and immigrants no longer come to America but instead connect their bodies to 'the net' and send their pure labor to robots in America.

Pottery Invitational The Worcester Center for Crafts, 25 Sagamore Road, Worcester, will host its Pottery Invitational Show and Sale Friday, April 5th - Sunday, April 7th in its Krikorian Gallery. The show and sale features 22 nationally recognized ceramic artists gathering to exhibit their work and to demonstrate their varying techniques. The show was curated by Connecticut potter Hayne Bayless and Massachusetts potter Hannah Niswonger. On Saturday and Sundy many of the participating artists will be hosting demonstrations - exploring the complexities and simplicities of making hand-crafter objects in clay. Show is open on Friday, April 5th from 5:30-8:30 p.m., Saturday, April 6th from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Sunday, April 7th from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Admission is FREE and open to the public.
