Pakachoag hosts gifted young pianist
On Saturday, March 9th at 2 p.m., as part of its 30th Anniversary Celebration, Pakachoag Music School of Greater Worcester, 203 Pakachoag Street, Auburn, will host a special guest student recital with Miles Walter, just 18 and the winner of three international piano competitions. A student of Pakachoag faculty member Vladimir Odinokikh (pictured together here as a youngster and present day), Walter will play a varied program including works by Mozart, Liszt, Rachmaninoff and Rorem. His wins in national and international competition include: First Place, 2012 Stony Brook Young Artist's International Piano Competition; First Prize, 2012 Bradshaw & Buono International Piano Competition; First Prize, 2012 Williams Chorale Bacardi Fallon Scholarship competition; and acceptance as one of just 20 international participants in the Eastman 2012 Young Artist's International Piano Competition. The concert is sure to inspire old and young, novices and hope-to-be-professionals alike! Please join us in celebrating the remarkable accomplishments of this student and teacher. Mysteries of repulsion
One of the most complex human emotions, disgust, is universal but not innate, the product of both culture and instinct. In her lively book That's Disgusting, Rachel Herz answers the basic questions that underpin human nature, from food preferences to sexual attraction to moral codes and political ideology, by examining them through the lens of disgust. Herz will unravel the mysteries of repulsion at the Worcester Jewish Community Center, 633 Salisbury Street, Worcester, on Wednesday, March 6th at 7 p.m. Following the lecture there will be a book signing and dessert reception. Women in Print 2013
The Worcester Women's History Project will host its 10th Annual Women in Print reception on Wednesday, March 6th from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Worcester Public Library, 3 Salem Square, Worcester. Featured authors this year include Katherine Keenum who wrote Where the Light Falls; Elizabeth Fideler who wrote Women Still at Work - Professionals Over Sixty and on the Job; and Edna P. Spencer who wrote What Color is the Wind. Admission is FREE and open to the public. In the event of inclement weather, the event will be held on Wednesday, March 13th at 5:30 p.m. |
Speaking Volumes
The Audio Journal is pleased to present Speaking Volumes, a book discussion program bringing the enjoyable experience of a reading group into listeners' homes. Volunteers discuss the book in the studio, and listeners can call in with their comments and be part of the group. Speaking Volumes is broadcast the first Tuesday of each month from 8-9 p.m. The number to call in to be part of of the program is 508 752-0557. |
Various Artists, Various Mediums
See works by artists who have never shown before along side works of other professional, better known Worcester artists at the Sprinkler Factory Gallery's opening for its newest exhibition entitled Various Artists, Various Mediums. Special opening reception will be held at the 38 Harlow Street, Worcester Gallery on Friday, March 8th from 5:30-8 p.m. The mediums the artists have used include watercolors, oils, acrylics, pastels, sculpture, painted chairs, computer art, calligraphy and photography. Each artist will provide a description of working in their chosen medium. The exhibition will be on view Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 1-8 p.m. through March 30th. Jungle Book Kids
Get ready for a swinging fun time as Apple Tree Arts presents Disney's The Jungle Book Kids on Friday, March 15th and Saturday, March 16th at 7 p.m. at the Grafton Middle School, 22 Providence Road, Grafton. The musical is based upon the classic Disney film and was especially adapted for elementary school-aged actors. The main character is Mowgli, a man-cub who was abandoned and raised by wolves in the jungle, and the adventures he faces along with his beloved friend Baloo the bear, Bagheera the panther and the fierce Shere Khan the tiger. Cast includes students from Grafton, Millbury, Northbridge, Sutton, Uxbridge and Berkley. Admission just $8 for adults, $5 for seniors and students, free for children 4 and under. Tickets will be sold at the door.
Apple Tree Arts continues its Penny campaign established to assist with fundraising efforts to restore the second and third floors of the Grafton Town House into a performance arts center. Children are encouraged to bring their pennies and loose change to the show. |

The British are coming! Join the Salisbury Singers for a royal evening of celebratory music featuring centuries old choral pieces that have helped define Great Britain's grand choral tradition, on Saturday, March 9th at 7:30 p.m. at the Chapel of the Holy Spirit at Assumption College, 500 Salisbury Street, Worcester. Roach-Evans will do a reading of the book, talk about how she collected seashells and created her paintings, share her seashell collection and sign copies of the book. Wabbit Wannabees Walter Crockett and the Wannabee Wabbits will perform at the legendary John Henry's Hammer Coffeehouse, First Unitarian Church, 90 Main Street, Worcester, on Saturday, March 16th at 7:30 p.m. After a five-year hiatus, Crockett is back with a bevy of original songs and a crack acoustic band of hot pickers and harmony singers. The Wannabee Wabbits bear a striking resemblance to the Oxymorons who joined Crockett and his late wife, Valerie, at coffeehouses and concerts for thirteen years: Bob Dick on acoustic bass, Fran McConville on mandolin, Mark Manuel on keyboards, new addition Matt Cassell on percussion. Walter plays lead acoustic guitar. This performance will feature cameo appearances by the Wabbettes: JoJo McConville and Maddie Hayman, on fiddle.
