Women in Armor
Have you ever wondered what the women were up to while the men were away fighting dressed in their shiny armor? Somewhere between stories of damsels-in-distress and myths of man killing amazons, lies the historical reality of women and warfare. Higgins Armory Museum, 100 Barber Avenue, Worcester, will celebrate Women in Armor Month throughout the month of March. Visit every Saturday March 2nd through March 30th to discover the larger influence of women from historical luminaries such as Boudicca  Queen of the Iceni, Joan of Arc and Elizabeth I of England, to the everyday roles of women in ancient times and the Viking Age. Most programs free with general admission. WOO Card holders save $2 off adult general admission.
JOMPing for Joy
The Joy of Music Program continues its 2013 Faculty Recital Series will two concerts this month, along with a special concert From Barcelona to Brazil to benefit JOMP's financial aid program. On Sunday, March 3rd at 4 p.m. enjoy the sounds of the talented Vladimir Vaskevich (classical & jazz clarinet) along with Wendy Ardizzone, piano and jazz with Jerry Sabatini, trumpet; Peter Lewis, double bass; Thaddeus Bell, piano and Mike Connors, drums.  Works by Paganini, Jeanjean, Sabatini, Kern, Ellington and Vaskevich. On Sunday, March 10th enjoy a New England Piano Trio, featuring Dr. Ning Tien, cello; Aaron Packard, violin and Kristjon Imperio, piano, who will perform the Dvorak "Dumky" Trio and Trio No. 1 in c minor by Villa-Lobos. Admission suggested donation of $10 for each concert, both of which will be held at JOMP, 1 Gorham Street, Worcester. On Friday, March 22nd at 8 p.m. don't miss a concert featuring Kathleen Corcoran, guitar, and Tracy Kraus, flute, along with alumni Lucas Apostoleris and Rachel Rynick, performing works by Granados, Albeniz, Beaser and Pixinguinha. Flower Power
Had enough of the snow and cold? Escape to Tower Hill Botanic Garden, 11 French Drive, Boylston, for the 184th Annual Camellia Show Saturday, March 2nd and Sunday, March 3rd. The Massachusetts Camellia Society, among the oldest societies in the United States, will share hundreds of gorgeous flowers at the peak of their display - both on the Camellia trees themselves as part of Tower Hill's own collection in the Limonaia and also in bowls of floating blossoms from private collections. A perfect way to spend a winter day amidst the subtropical greenery of THBG's indoor spaces with the backdrop of the dramatic Winter Garden. Camellia Show included with regular admission. Celebrating Maple Days & Native Americans
Historians at Old Sturbridge Village, 1 Old Sturbridge Village Road, Sturbridge, will celebrate Maple Days each Saturday and Sunday throughout the month of March. See demonstrations of early New England maple sugar-making at the village's own working 'sugar camp' and experience the entire sugar-making process from tapping trees to sugaring off. New England farm families in the 1830s tapped around 100 trees to make 44 pounds of sugar each session. Included with general admission.

On the weekend of March 2nd - 3rd, some of New England's most noted authorities on Native American folkways, food, music and crafts will gather at the Village for the museum's first annual Native American Weekend. Noted Nipmuck flute maker Hawk Henries will demonstrate flute-making and play music on a variety of traditional hand-made eastern woodlands flutes. Indian Doctress Molly Geet will present Algonkian Indian Stories and Wooden Snowshoes and Fur Mittens: Algonkian Winter Fashions while Jeff and Judy Kalin of Primitive Technologies will make Native American tools and demonstrate primitive cooking techniques over an open fire. Hands-on crafts and games with a Native American theme will be offered all weekend.

Carnival of Animals
See animals come to life in a magical way that can only be achieved through music when the Worcester Chamber Music Society hosts is annual Family Concert on Sunday, March 3rd at 3 p.m. at Mechanics Hall, 321 Main Street, Worcester. Program will feature perennial favorite for children of all ages, Saint-Saens Carnival of the Animals. Bring a new or gently used book to be donated to the Reliant Medical Group Foundation's Reach Out and Read program and be entered into a drawing to win a family membership to the EcoTarium. Acclaimed Academy

Be part of history as Music Worcester welcomes the critically acclaimed Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Orchestra to Mechanics Hall, 321 Main Street, Worcester, for a special concert on Friday, March 8th. Recognized as one of the finest chamber orchestras in the world, enjoy a pre-concert reception starting at 6:30 p.m. celebrating the Academy's return to Worcester as well as to toast the live broadcast of the event on WGBH radio - a first in Music Worcester history! The concert gets underway at 8 p.m. featuring cellist Alisa Weilerstein and pianist Inon Barnatan, performing with an enthusiasm for fresh, brilliant interpretations of the world's most loved classical music and renowned for its polished and refined sound. Friday Night Fun
Get a taste of the ancient art of glass blowing, then enjoy a taste of the season in your handmade Saint Paddy's beer glass! The Worcester Center for Crafts invites you to its Friday Night Fun with Glassblowing workshop on Friday, March 8th from 6:30-9:30 p.m. In just one evening you'll learn about the history and process behind creating beautiful blown glass creations at the New Street Glass Studio, leading up to gathering, blowing the bubble, shaping a cylinder and applying a handle to your own St. Patrick's theme glass.  Various Artists, Various Mediums
Enjoy something for everyone at The Sprinkler Factory Gallery, 38 Harlow Street, Worcester, newest exhibition, Various Artists, Various Mediums. Special opening reception will be held on Friday, March 8th from 5:30-8 p.m. The exhibition features work by some artists who have never shown their work before, along side work by professionals who are well known in Worcester. Mediums include watercolors, oils, acrylics, pastels, sculpture, painted chairs, computer art, calligraphy and photography. Exhibit open 1 - 8 p.m. on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays throughout the month of March. The British are Coming!
Join the Salisbury Singers for a royal evening of celebratory music featuring centuries old choral pieces that have helped define Great Britain's grand choral tradition, on Saturday, March 9th at 7:30 p.m. at the Chapel of the Holy Spirit at Assumption College, 500 Salisbury Street, Worcester. While we can't confirm that William and Kate will be in attendance, you still won't want to miss this program of rich choral heritage, distinctive ringing sounds, pure harmonies and majestic organ accompaniments. The Salisbury Singers will be joined by the Worcester Children's Chorus, conducted by Jennifer Kane and guest organist William Ness. Tickets available online or at the door. Treasures from the Northeast Coast
There are few pleasures greater than searching for seashells on the beach with children. Now you can help children identify their finds and spark their curiosity even farther with the aid of a new children's book, Seashells: Treasures from the Northeast Coast. Join Worcester author and artist Joanne Roach-Evans to celebrate the release of her new book on Sunday, March 10th from 2-3:30 p.m. at MA Audubon Broad Meadow Brook Wildlife Sanctuary, 414 Massasoit Road, Worcester. Roach-Evans will do a reading of the book, talk about how she collected seashells and created her paintings, share her seashell collection, and sign copies of the book. An art exhibit of the paintings will be on display at Broad Meadow Brook, and light refreshments will be served. Admission to the event is free and open to the public. Devil Music
The Devil Music Ensemble is three, multi-instrumental musicians from Boston that have been making their name with live original score performances to classic silent film. Don't miss their live performance on Wednesday, March 13th at 7:30 p.m. at Clark University's Traina Center for the Arts, 92 Downing Street, Worcester. Performance will feature original music with an amazing and virtually unknown silent Chinese Kung Fu film called Red Heroine (directed by Wen Yimin, 1929). This is the only feature length Chinese martial arts film from the silent era that still exists in its entirety. This score, created, and performed by DME, is the only modern music to be created specifically for this film! Admission is FREE and open to the public. Tis the season
If there's a place to celebrate the St. Patty's Day season, the Celtic Tavern, 45 Belmont Street, Northborough, is it! The fun starts early with a special Kickoff Party on Sunday, March 10th featuring great Irish music, corned beef and cabbage, Irish coffee and more! To be followed by an acoustic artist everyday leading up to the Big Day, Sunday, March 17th! The Worcester Chamber Music Society continues its Cafe Concert Series with a performance at Nuovo Restaurant, 92 Shrewsbury Street, Worcester, on Thursday, March 14th. Got game?
Have you got game? The Harlem Globetrotters do and they'll be bringing their one-of-a-kind play to the DCU Center, 50 Foster Street, Worcester, on Sunday, March 17th. Known across the globe as innovators of the game of basketball, the Globetrotters will again taking kid participation and fun to a whole new level with their 2013 You Write the Rules World Tour! Fans will decide the rules for the game that could affect the final outcome. This year's Globetrotters roster features stars such as Big Easy Lofton and Scooter Christensen. They will join many other fan favorites, including, 7-ft 4-in Stretch Middleton and female star TNT Maddox. Tickets available online or at the DCU Center Box Office. Wall at WAM
While the Worcester Art Museum's newest director has been hard at work opening doors (quite literally!) at the museum, a collaborative husband and wife team have been hard at work on the museum's walls - or rather, The Wall. On Saturday, March 23rd from 5-7 p.m., don't miss the exhibition opening and artist reception for the 10th mural for the Wall at WAM series. Artists Robert and Shana ParkeHarrison were commissioned to create the exhibition. Their staged photography involves performance, sculptural props, elaborate back drops and digital technology. Sepia-toned images from their critically acclaimed series The Architect's Brother (1993-2005) raised questions about Earth's vulnerability. Admission is free and open to all. Celtic Crossroads
Grab your gillies and head over to The Hanover Theatre, 2 Southbridge Street, Worcester, on Saturday, March 30th, for what's been described as one of the most exhilarating and authentic shows to come from Ireland in decades - Celtic Crossroads! This explosion of youthful energy and dazzling musicianship abounds with fusions of traditional Irish music, bluegrass, gypsy and jazz whilst pulsating with the rhythms of exciting Irish dance percussion. Worcester's original Craft Beer Festival - Brew Woo, returns for its third year on Saturday, March 30th with two sessions from 2-5 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. in the Convention Center of the DCU Center, 50 Foster Street, Worcester. As in year's past, Brew Woo will feature breweries with craft beers and local brews, live music, several merchandise vendors and a food court stationed by local eateries.
