Hands on History
The Worcester Historical Museum, 30 Elm Street, Worcester, invites you to spend a historically fun day (or every day!) during school vacation week celebrating the opening of the museum's new Alden Family Gallery. Admission will be FREE for all Tuesday, February 19th - Saturday, February 23rd with fun activities being offered each day between 11 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Days, and Knights, to Remember
Higgins Armory Museum, 100 Barber Avenue, Worcester, welcomes youngsters for a week of fun, daily through Friday, February 22nd. See live and in person the toys that knights played with along with other special presentations, workshops and interactive experiences. See a knight in full armor as he guards the Higgins castle. Try your hand at swordplay in a 45-minute drop-in workshop, or create a gift for yourself or a loved one in a shield workshop. Most programs are free with museum admission. Old Fashioned Fun
Take a step back in time for some old fashioned fun at Old Sturbridge Village, 1 Old Sturbridge Village Road, Sturbridge, will offer sleigh rides, skating and sledding (weather permitting), hearthside cooking, candle making as well as candle dipping, sewing and weaving crafts (additional fees may apply) throughout the week of Tuesday, February 19th - Sunday, February 24th. OSV will also celebrate Black History Weekend, February 23rd & 24th, highlighting some of the most inspiring stories from African-American history, including the Civil War bravery of the all-Black Massachusetts 54th Regiment; Amistad, slave captive Sarah Margru who became America's first African college graduate; and Elizabeth Keckly, a former slave who became a confidante of Mary Todd Lincoln. 2013 WAC Grantees announced
The Worcester Arts Council has announced the recipients of funding for its 2013 granting cycle. WAC awarded a total of $86,458 to some 42 Worcester area artists, organizations and educational institutions. Funding comes from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, through its Local Cultural Council program. The 2013 allocation includes two $5,000 Artist Fellowships, awarded to individuals to assist in the funding of their endeavors in the arts, humanities and interpretative sciences. The 2013 WAC Fellows are Sarah Williams, a sculpture and visual artist rooted in the tradition of fine craft; and Jeff Galindo, a distinguished jazz musician.
"The Worcester Arts Council worked diligently to select recipients based on the priorities put forth through the help of the communities input," explained Tina Zlody, Worcester Arts Council Chair. "WAC is thrilled to be able to support these noteworthy projects that illustrate the vibrant cultural community that can be found throughout Worcester. These projects and their success will play a vital and important role in enhancing the strength of our community through art and creative expression." Plans are underway for a reception in April to honor all of the 2013 recipients. A complete list of funded projects can be found online. |

Winter Carnival Let's play! Tower Hill Botanic Garden, 11 French Drive, Boylston, will host its 2nd Annual Winter Carnival on Saturday, February 23rd from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Admission to the carnival is included with regular admission to the Garden. All kinds of activities, indoors and out - will delight children and families of all ages. Programs will include scavenger hunts, craft session, live Alpacas from Great Rock Alpacas of Barre, outdoor winter games, guided walks focused on finding animal tracks, spotting winter birds, and identifying trees in winter. Guests will also have the opportunity to create snow sculptures, and snowshoes will be available for rent. The Gerwick Puppets will present three, 20-minute puppet shows throughout the day, featuring tales from Aesop's Fables. Admission to the carnival is included with regular admission. Boom! Worcester State University Theatre Visual & Performing Arts Department, 486 Chandler Street, Worcester, will present Peter Sinn' Nachtrieb's BOOM Thursday, February 21st - Saturday, February 23rd at 8 p.m. and again on Sunday, February 24th at 2 p.m. at the newly renovated Fuller Theatre in the Shaughnessy Administration Building. A grad student's personal ad lures a randy journalism coed to his subterranean lab, where he studies fish sleep cycles for signs of the apocalypse. Main South's Octagon House Inn 1853, one of Worcester's two Octagon houses was built on a large lot in the newly developing Main South neighborhood. Preservation Worcester, 10 Cedar Street, Worcester invites you to find out about the Octagon House fad on Tuesday, February 26th from 5:30-7 p.m. Find out why houses were built with eight sides and learn about the early family that lived in this house that is still tucked away on Norwood Street. This, the second of four in a series of illustrated talks that unveil fascinating facts about Worcester's Main South, its historic buildings, neighborhoods and historic personages, is FREE to attend and open to the public. |
Pretty Pysanky Just in time for Easter, explore the art, symbolism and joy in creating pysanky. The Museum of Russian Icons, 203 Union Street, Clinton, will host Pysanky Ukranian Easter Egg Decorating Workshops on Friday, March 1st from 8:30 a.m. - 12 noon; Saturday, March 2nd - SOLD OUT, and again on Saturday, April 13th either 8:30 a.m. - 12 noon or 1-4:30 p.m. Pysanky are Ukranian Easter Eggs decorated using beeswax and dyes that are applied in layers. No experience necessary, all materials will be provided. Each participant will create a unique and beautiful egg, led by instructor Karen Brouillette and Susan Dow. Advance registration required. Acclaimed Aademy What better way to start your weekend that to revel in the extraordinary artistry of the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Orchestra with superstar cellist Alisa Wilerstein? Music Worcester is thrilled to host the highly acclaimed ensemble for one night only at Mechanics Hall, 321 Main Street, Worcester, on Friday, March 8th at 8 p.m. Regarded as one of the finest chamber orchestras in the world - performing with an enthusiasm for fresh, brilliant interpretation of the world's most loved classical music, and is renowned for its polished and refined sound. Formed in 1958 from a group of leading London musicians, it performs without a conductor. Listen to an audio clip of the talented orchestra here. The British are Coming!
Join the Salisbury Singers for a royal evening of celebratory music featuring centuries-old choral pieces that have helped define Great Britain's grand choral tradition on Saturday, March 9th at 7:30 p.m., at the Chapel of the Holy spirit at Assumption College, 500 Salisbury Street, Worcester. While we can't confirm that William and Kate will be in attendance, you still won't want to miss this program of rich choral heritage, distinctive ringing sounds, pure harmonies and majestic organ accompaniments. The all-British program that will spotlight the music of William Walton and Benjamin Britten. The Singers will be joined by the Worcester Children's Chorus, conducted by Jennifer Kane, and guest organist William Ness. Tickets available online or at the door. Central Massachusetts Junior Music Festival: Congratulations to Paris Jenson, soprano, of Sullivan Middle School who will represent the Worcester Public Schools at the Central Massachusetts Junior Festival concert on April 27th at the Groton-Dunstable Performing Arts Center. Paris competed against hundreds of 7th and 8th graders from across Worcester County to perform with the Honors Chorus.
Central Massachusetts Senior Music Festival Winners: These students competed against more than 1,200 students from public, private and parochial schools throughout Worcester County to win about 300 seats in the Festival Concert at Mechanics Hall on January 19, 2013. Massachusetts Music Educators All-State Festival Young Composer's Prize: The following Burncoat High School students have been chosen from a state-wide field to participate in the All-State Young Composer Master Class with faculty from the Berklee College of Music: Matthew Abraham; Corey Daley; Zaidmary Barreto and Nathan Luong
Massachusetts Music Educators All-State Festival: As the result of the auditions of more than 4,000 students representing almost every community in Massachusetts, approximately 1,000 student musicians are selected to audition for participation in the All State Chorus, All State Concert Band, All State Orchestra, and All State Jazz Band. From this audition, only 500 are invited to participate as Symphony Hall Scholars in the All State Concert to be held at Boston's Symphony Hall on March 2nd. Worcester Public Schools is proud to announce the following students will participate: Garrett Levesque - Violin, Burncoat High School; Brielle Stovall - Soprano, South High Community School; Alana Kearney - Soprano, Doherty Memorial High School; and Nabeel Tokatli - Tenor, Doherty Memorial High School.
