Dear Readers and Friends of BahamaIslandsInfo,

Today will be the last newsletter from us (BAHAMAISLANDSINFO) as we transition into a new phase for our newsletter and mail-out services. We will be changing our format slightly, to better enhance mobile device viewing, and our name.

Please look for more information from us on this next week. You will most likely need to approve the newly-named email that comes to you to make sure it does not stay in your junk folder.

As we make this transition we must thank our staff for all their tireless work each week to bring you as much Bahamas news and information as we can. Unbelievably it's been over 9 years since this all started and as we make some changes we hope you will stay with us as we endeavour to continue to bring you information on national and local events in our country.

We also thank you for your wonderful support over the years; the comments, the emails, the letters and calls have really made us smile, laugh and feel appreciated.

Stay tuned for more news and, as usual, enjoy this week's news ...

We are looking for an indoor home for Bingo.

Deep Water Cay General Manager: Workforce rightsizing on the cay
Over the past year our team has grown in anticipation of improved Bahamian tourism and to support a larger number of guests through our efforts to generate more revenues while not negatively impacting the fragile fisheries that surround Deep Water Cay and East End Grand Bahama. While we remain in the process of that development, slow approvals and the issues raised by the BFFIA have affected timing. We are ensuring our associate levels are properly matched to our current guest levels.

We have worked with each of the department managers to bring team numbers into an appropriate balance for now, returning to our historical staffing model, requiring a reduction of 9 employees. Those that have been laid off have served Deep Water Cay very well and we thank them for their service, have given them their severance, and our greatest respect.

PharmaChem Technologies celebrates groundbreaking of $120 million manufacturing facility

PharmaChem Technologies broke ground on its $120 million multiproduct manufacturing plant last Thursday in a ceremony which saw government officials and industrial sector executives heralding significant growth of industrial and economic development on Grand Bahama.

Scheduled for a construction period of two and a half years, the expansion project is anticipated to involve over 100 local contractors and expand the PharmaChem staff from its current 120 personnel to 220 employees.

The multimillion-dollar manufacturing plant is the product of a partnership between PharmaChem and California-based biopharmaceutical company Gilead Sciences Incorporated. Once completed, the three-storey facility - projected to span the size of a football field - will provide active pharmaceutical ingredients to support Gilead's expanding line of products.

Prime Minister Perry Christie said the partnership is evidence of Grand Bahama's viability as a home for international industrial companies.

"I join in the hope that for decades to come international and innovative companies such as PharmaChem Technologies Ltd, which is domiciled in Grand Bahama, would continue to choose this destination for the reason that they will be operating within a business and regulatory environment that has met all known international standards of best practice," Prime Minister Christie said.

He expressed optimism for the facility's impact on Grand Bahama's economy and employment levels, noting that the $120 million dollar investment would create a need for additional jobs for contractors and Bahamians interested in science fields.
