Fred Smith: Police ignored repeated complaints of harassment, violence
Statement by Fred Smith, QC, in response to press conference by Commissioner of Police Ellison Greenslade

First of all, let me thank and congratulate Commissioner of Police Ellison Greenslade for his pledge to fully investigate the claims of a shameful campaign of harassment, intimidation and violence against myself and several other individuals. This has been a terrifying ordeal for us all and we welcome the involvement of the Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF). I know Mr. Greenslade well from his time in Freeport and believe him to be an upstanding officer of the law and a man of integrity and unimpeachable character.

Over the last week, press reports, perhaps understandably, have focused on the claims of a murder-for-hire plot. However, the substance of our action is much broader than that. We seek protection from a sustained campaign of harassment, intimidation and violence perpetrated against us over the course of two-and-a-half years.

Shena Bowleg, BTC Contact Centre Manager, said that the additional over-the-phone payment option has proved very popular very quickly. "The word got around fast. Experts: 'Blazing landfill a public health crisis'
Crystal clear water resembling the most pristine swimming pools you can imagine. Fresh air that carries the scent of the sea and the sounds of swooping sea gulls. It's better in the Bahamas.

Unless the dump is on fire, of course. The New Providence landfill has been ablaze twice this week, pumping out air so noxious that no amount of fresh sea air could ever mask it. Not exactly the stuff fairy tale, Chamber-of-Commerce-type vacations are made of. Moreover, it may be years before we fully understand the consequences of being exposed to the potentially poisonous clouds of billowing gray smoke. So say two experts - an ecologist and a physician -- who spared no words on the Lester R. Cox radio show, Connected, on Guardian Talk Radio today, sharing concern about short and long-term impact of breathing polluted air.

Freeport gets positive response at RILA 2016
Reducing cost, greater efficiency and first to market are buzz terms for 2016 across the global supply chain and transportation industries. For the Invest Grand Bahama (IGB) team, making the connect between Freeport's location as a linchpin, and the vast transport network that surrounds it, was the action plan during the 2016 Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) Supply Chain Conference, in Grapevine Texas, earlier this month.

According to a report from eMarketer.com, worldwide retail sales were more than $22 trillion in 2014, and expected to reach around $24 trillion by the end of 2015. Supply chains and transport networks play an integral role in the success of this multi-trillion dollar industry.

HSGB rolls into spring with Trivia Night fun and an Easter special
80 intrepid players on 18 teams competed for bragging rights (and a 2016 HSGB calendar) at the Humane Society of Grand Bahama's Trivia Night held last Saturday at the Garden of the Groves. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers team (Jackie and Mike Dack and family/friends) took the top honours at the end of the quiz with a score of 34 out of 45 possible points.

Easter is fast approaching! As always, we caution people to think twice before purchasing cute little baby animals for their kids; particularly bunnies which seem to be the most popular. The cutest little animals inevitably grow up in short order, and every living creature requires daily care. Bunnies require a varied but specific diet (they can't live on carrots alone!) and veterinary care just like dogs and cats.

Government and Grand Bahama Shipyard establish apprenticeship-to-employment template

The collaboration between the Government of The Bahamas and Grand Bahama Shipyard will be used as a template for other joint ventures to create employment for qualified Bahamians, said the Prime Minister of the Bahamas, the Rt. Hon. Perry Christie, during the agreement signing ceremony at Grand Bahama Shipyard last Thursday.

Prime Minister Christie, along with Minister of Tourism, the Hon. Obie Wilchcombe; Minister of Transport and Aviation, the Hon. Glenys Hanna-Martin; Minister of Education, Science and Technology, the Hon. Jerome Fitzgerald; Minister for Grand Bahama, the Hon. Dr. Michael Darville; and Executive Director of the National Training Agency, Agatha Marcelle, were all a part of the ceremony. Representing Grand Bahama Shipyard were Steve Jervis, CEO and Linda Turnquest, CFO.

The Prime Minister thanked Mr. Jervis and his team for implementing an apprenticeship-to-employment programme that will expand and serve as a national model for such joint ventures around the country that will multiply opportunity for young people to move into careers.

He said that when he participated in the graduation ceremony of the shipyard, he was impressed with what he heard about 12 apprentices who had matured over a four-year programme, namely the subjects they had taken and the skilled mastered: "It was important for me then to observe that when one looked at the system of apprenticeship, and one looked at a country like Germany where they have institutionalised training by apprenticeship, that the shipyard was onto something special."
