Strong local libraries, stronger Bahamian societies
As The Bahamas seeks to become a more developed and self-sufficient nation, there has to exist among the Bahamian people a deep need for a stronger and more balanced society. Deep down there is a voice in each of us that cries out to be treated with respect, dignity and equality. Some individuals struggled and died for this truth to be embraced by all of us as a people. The late Sir Lynden Pindling and others shared this vision. He and other great Bahamians believed in a better Bahamas and that spirit must be kept alive in the hearts of all-both young and old.

Epictetus stated, "only the educated are free". If this statement is true, then it is the library's responsibility to help educate the masses that will never walk through the doors of a college or university. Libraries are more than collections of books-no matter the format. They are community centres for the Bahamian people and others who walk through their doors.

World Day of Prayer 2016 features Cuban theme
Women, men and children in more than 170 countries and regions will celebrate World Day of Prayer, Friday, March 4, 2016. This year, the women of the WDP Committee of Cuba call us into worship considering the words "Receive children, receive me." With these words as backdrop, we are invited to learn about Cuba's history and rich cultural diversity.

The women of Cuba share their stories of tradition, intergenerational wisdom and experiences of God's profound love and acceptance. Through the worship service, we learn of Jesus' profound teaching of acceptance as he states, "Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs" (Mk. 10:14-15). As we listen to the women of Cuba throughout the worship service, we are invited to wholly receive others, as Jesus calls us, into the kingdom of God.

Immortalizing Rake 'n' Scrape

Musician Fred Ferguson along with Ronald Simms and the late Nat Williams decided that it was important to preserve the dying art of Rake 'n' Scrape; so they identified two popular groups, namely Bo Hog & The Rooters, and Ophie & The Websites, and got them into a recording studio.

With the assistance of Tim Rommen, professor of music and African Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, they managed to to get the music CD's accepted by, and added to, the catalogue of the Smithsonian in Washington D.C.

The music can be found on the Smithsonian's website accompanied with 24 pages of notes and photos compiled and annotated by Mr. Tim Rommen with assistance from Fred Ferguson.

"This is a major accomplishment for The Bahamas for the preservation of our indigenous music, Rake 'n' Scrape," said Mr. Ferguson.

These compact discs are the closest thing to the Rake 'n' Scrape of yester-year," said the Hon. Dr. Daniel Johnson Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture. These CD's "will be worth millions in about ten years because persons will use them to see how Rake 'n' Scrape should sound," he said.
