Twenty-six Bahamians named in the Queen's New Year's Honours
Government House announced on New Year's Eve, that 26 Bahamians from all walks of life have been named in Her Majesty the Queen's 2016 New Year's Honours list for exemplary service to the country.

Receiving top honours, or Knighthoods, of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George, are Franklin Wilson, for services to business and philanthropy, and Charles Carter for broadcasting and the media. The Hon. Anita Mildred Allen was named Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for services to the Bahamas Court of Appeal and Judiciary.

300-plus new students enter The College of The Bahamas
The College of The Bahamas Oakes Field campus was abuzz as students new to The College attended new student orientation for the Spring 2016 semester. The number of students accepted to the Oakes Field campus in Nassau and the Northern Bahamas Campus in Grand Bahama was in total 368 students.

President of The College of The Bahamas Dr. Rodney D. Smith told the incoming students that they are among the best in the world. "You have to understand that you are among the best in the entire world, all of you in here. That is a fact. There is no mistake, I think that God put all of us on this little small piece of the world and called it The Bahamas. There is no mistake that you are sitting in this room today. There is no mistake that you are hearing me remind you that you are among the best in the world," said Dr. Smith.

Registrar General's department launches e-services
The Government of the Bahamas officially launched its E-Services Business Registration Platform at Registrar General's Department on Shirley and Charlotte Streets, January 5, 2016.

Registrar General Deirdre Clarke-Maycock described the initiative as a "collaborative" process between public and private sector agencies that allows The Bahamas to compete "effectively" with international jurisdictions and demonstrate its leadership in the region.

Palm Cay Marina named official port of entry
This is the fourth time seasoned sailors Mike Fish and Martha Garczynski made the crossing from Ft. Lauderdale to The Bahamas aboard their 47-foot sailboat Layla, but this time was different from all the rest. Fish and Garczynski made a bit of maritime history, becoming the first vessel to clear Customs and Immigration at the Palm Cay Marina.

"It was a milestone for the marina and Mike and Martha were so pleased that they could sail directly into Palm Cay without having to clear at another destination or marina first," said Demaro Demeritte, Manager of the 194-slip marina that continually reels in rave reviews and is now the only marina in New Providence to carry the highest possible ranking on ActiveCaptain.com, the TripAdvisor-like site for boaters.

Ranfurly Home gets holiday donation from CIBC FirstCaribbean
The Ranfurly Home for Children got some added cheer just in time for the holidays this year when CIBC FirstCaribbean demonstrated its commitment to Bahamian Youth with a donation to help cover the home's holiday activities. A long-time sponsor of Ranfurly Home, the Bank commended the home for the profound impact it makes on the lives of young Bahamians who need it most.

"Our young people are the country's most valuable resources but also our most vulnerable," said CIBC FirstCaribbean Managing Director Marie Rodland-Allen. "We consider it doing our part to nurture our youth when we support organisations like The Ranfurly Home who do incredible work to improve the lives of many Bahamian children."

It's a dog's life ... only better at Caves Village Veterinary Hospital
Palmdale Veterinary Group recently held an Open House Mix 'n' Mingle Pet Affair to mark the opening of its newest facility, the Caves Village Veterinary Hospital in Western New Providence. The sister practice to Palmdale Veterinary Hospital offers a complete veterinary service from routine examinations, vaccinations, advanced diagnostics, pet medications and specialised food supplies.

Attendees were invited to enter a raffle before the draw date of December 21st to win $500 in goods and services from the Veterinary group. Dr. Peter Bizzell who with his wife Sylvia purchased Palmdale Veterinary Clinic from Dr Gary Cash 15 years ago, said that the new facility aims to bring greater convenience to western clients and a higher level of pet care.

College of The Bahamas accommodates late payments for Spring 2016
On Monday, January 4th an inordinate number of returning College students were on lines at The College attempting to either make payments by cash, scholarship or arrange a deferred payment plan.

Some students waited for the last minute to make payments and opted not to use the online payment system. The very same online payment system was credited back in August 2015 as the most uneventful and smooth payment and registration process The College has experienced in several years. The College, however, immediately made the following adjustments in order to accommodate the students:

Deep Water Cay reaches nearly 90,000 Nashville residents in magazine feature
Over the holidays, Deep Water Cay was featured in 'Nashville Lifestyle' magazine, which reaches 86,000 Nashville residents as well as visitors to the Tennessee city. The article featured a view into a slice of Bahamian paradise located in the far east of Grand Bahama.

Deep Water Cay continues to highlight the beauty and draw of the island and the magazine highlights the resorts fishing as well as diving amenities. Pictured are photos of the coverage from the magazine which clearly shows off the beauty of the historical resort.

Agave retains Chef Noel title
Although the holidays may be over, the memories of Festival Noel are still lingering for Agave, who captured the Chef Noel title for a third time - two times back-to-back! Seven restaurants competed in the 2015 Chef Noel culinary competition, which is a record entrance for the event. Despite the bad weather on the night, the turnout was excellent, garnering the event one of its best financial results too.

"I was very pleased to hear we had won the Chef Noel competition," said Jasmine Sands, Sous Chef at Agave. "We're thrilled that the BNT provides this opportunity for us to show off our skills each year. We would like to thank the BNT for inviting us to participate again and the guests for selecting us as the winners for the second year in a row."

Darville: Positive economic changes for GB in 2016
There are going to be some positive economic changes taking place in Grand Bahama during 2016 says the Minister for Grand Bahama, the Hon. Dr. Michael Darville. Dr. Darville's comments came Wednesday morning as he officially welcomed the new Administrator for the City of Freeport, Preston Cunningham to Grand Bahama.

Mr. Cunningham replaces outgoing Administrator, Charles King, who has been transferred to New Providence having received a more senior position as Deputy Director at the Department of Local Government. Director of Local Government Alexander Williams has confirmed the new appointments.

Water for High Rock in final planning stages
Minister for Grand Bahama, the Hon. Dr. Michael Darville on Wednesday announced that they are in the final stages of planning to supply neighbouring settlements in High Rock with fresh potable water. The committee, under the direction of the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry for Grand Bahama Melvin Seymour, has been meeting for the past three months to come up with best method of providing water.

The project is expected to cost around half-a-million dollars. They are pictured discussing their plans with Minister Darville.

One of the taglines for this movie: Nothing Hits Harder Than The Truth. A forensic pathologist uncovers the truth about brain damage in football players who suffer repeated head trauma in the course of an average game. In his attempt to bring this information to the public he must face the powerful organization which will try to discredit him and his findings out of greed.

Dr. Bennet Omalu is a forensic pathologist from Nigeria working in a Pennsylvania coroner's office who discovers the disorder chronic traumatic encephalopathy while performing an autopsy on a former football player. Dr. Cyril Wecht is the head of the Allegheny County coroner's office who encourages Dr. Omalu to publish his findings after seeing the lengths he would go to in uncovering the information. Dr. Julian Bailes is a former team doctor for the Pittsburgh Steelers who helps Dr. Omalu publish his paper on CTE after seeing ex-football players deteriorate mentally in front of him. Dave Duerson is a former NFL Players Association executive who does not believe in Dr. Omalu's findings and dismisses him as a foreigner without a solid medical foundation.

Grand Bahama New Year's Junkanoo a huge success
The 2016 New Year's Day Junkanoo Parade on Grand Bahama again was a huge success according to Co-Chairman Allyson Smith. During a press conference, January 5, 2016 at the Ministry of Youth Sports & Culture on Grand Bahama, Ms. Smith stated that she was pleased with the participants and the improvement in creativity of Junkanoo costumes. According to officers from the Royal Bahamas Police Force, the crowd was an estimated 7,000 spectators.

Minister Gray announces this weekend's 'King Eric' Gibson All For One Regatta
Minister of Agriculture and Marine Resources the Hon. V. Alfred Gray at a press conference on Monday announced the annual 'All-for-One Regatta' that will take place in Montagu Bay on Majority Rule Weekend, January 9-11, 2016. The regatta is in memory of regatta consultant and racing legend, "King Eric" Gibson.

Giving a little history at his offices at Island Traders Building, the Minister said that the 'All For One Regatta,' was formerly the New Year's Day Regatta. Now, in partnership with the Gibson Family, it is being taken to a new level under his Ministry.

Bahamas Rugby goes up against USA South January 9
On Saturday, January 9, 2016, Bahamas Rugby will be hosting USA South for a Divisional Promotion/Relegation match. The winning side will be promoted into North Caribbean Division 1.

A refereeing course will be held on Sunday, January 10, and will be conducted by an IRB approved instructor.

Freeport Rugby Football Club's boys soccer programme recommences January 16
Freeport Rugby Football Club's boys soccer Saturday programme will recommence after the Christmas break on Saturday January 16th at 10.30am for boys aged 7 to 14 at the Freeport Rugby Football Club field.

At that time the 7 to 10 year olds will be allocated their respective coaches and teams for the up and coming league season that will formally start later in January after a couple of weeks of practice games. Registered players who have not already collected their uniform shirts can also obtain them at the same time. We also still have spaces for new players and thus welcome new registrants who can sign up on the day also.

Bahamas featured at Miami Dolphins game vs Indianapolis Colts

Once again the Islands of The Bahamas was the premier vacation destination solely promoted to thousands of sports fans in a Bahamas themed game between the Miami Dolphins and the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, December 27, at the newly renovated Sun Life Stadium. The Colts won, 18-12.

The Islands of The Bahamas was promoted as the exclusive destination of the Miami Dolphins, throughout the four-hour game, on some 22,400 total square ft. of high definition video board and a near capacity crowd of more than sixty-five thousand fans.

The highly contested game was also covered widely by the media and promoted to millions more via the Miami Dolphins internet marketing and social media channels.

Mr. Todd Kline, Chief Communications Officer for Developments for the Miami Dolphins, also made a special presentation to The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism (BMOT), in celebration of its on-going partnership with the Miami Dolphins. Accepting the gift on behalf of the Bahamas Minister of Tourism, the Hon. Obie Wilchcombe was the Minister of State for Finance, the Hon. Michael Halkitis, who wore a Miami Dolphins 'Jarvis Landry' jersey.
