Leading environmental lawyer, consultant warns 'climate change granddaddy of all risks'
With The Bahamas recognized as one of the most vulnerable countries on the planet to face dire consequences from rising seas that could swallow up to 80% of the land mass of the islands by the end of the century, a leading environmental consultant and attorney is calling for 'immediate radical action' to stem the tide of climate change.

"We no longer have the luxury of talking about the environment as if it is something to worry about in the future," said Romi Ferreira, a regional expert and a director of environmental movement Save The Bays. "At the current rate of sea level rise, we stand to lose 80% of our country. And our leaders don't get it. They are just paying lip service to it, talking about climate change while letting BEC continue to burn fossil fuels and allowing wetlands to be destroyed and disappear."

Bahamas' first cochlear implant surgery performed at Doctors Hospital
Three years ago, Wesley Paul suddenly went deaf. He had just no residual hearing in his left ear and minimal hearing in his right, and he was no longer able to communicate, continue to work in the financial sector or participate in one of his favourite hobbies - singing.

While it remains unclear what led to his hearing loss, Wesley recalls having an earache in August, 2012. He took over the counter medication and never got medical attention, instead he compensated for the deficiency by relying on his left ear for listening and receiving information. Early in 2013, he subsequently lost his hearing in his left ear.

Father Christmas was never short of children tugging at his beard and was kept busy with the expected picture-taking which also enticed more than the usual amount of grown-ups to his knee! Paul de Souza wins Laser Radial class and Ben Derbyshire wins 4.7 class at Junior Laser Nationals
This year's Junior Laser Nationals was held on Montagu Bay on November 21 and 22. Ben Derbyshire enjoyed an easy win in the Laser 4.7 class as he took all but one race in the series. For Paul de Souza, it was a bit different as his sparing partner and four-time Bahamas Optimist National Champion, Spencer Cartwright, pushed him the entire series.

While Spencer was often in the lead, Paul would fight his way through before the finish to win and in the end triumphed overall by only two points. Such close racing made for a very suspenseful and exciting series - a repeat of last year's Junior Nationals rivalry when Spencer beat Paul by only one point.

Post-Joaquin: Long Island slowly returns to normal

Some two months after Hurricane Joaquin devastated Long Island, displacing residents and debilitating the economy, the southeast island is slowly returning to normal operations.

Work teams busy on roof tops, congregations worshipping in church, children riding bicycles and seniors relaxing outdoors are all evidence of the comeback of the island witnessed by the team including Jack Thompson, administrator of the government's National Recovery and Reconstruction Unit; Captain Stephen Russell; members of the National Disaster Reconstruction Committee along with a team from Bahamas Information Services who recently travelled through the settlements.

Island Administrator Theresa Boodle-Bethel said the residents have awakened to their realities and are slowly "coming out of it."

"They've assessed the damage and I'm satisfied that they've come to grips with their losses, especially those near the coastline. Some of them are in shells, but they are in good spirits," said the administrator.

"A number of them who could afford it took advantage of the exigency order. A number of them could not afford it because of the complete washout of their coastal homes. Surprisingly they seem to be holding up given the magnitude of their losses. Some residents' entire homes were underwater. In Grays so many of the families had to rescue each other and swim to safety so the magnitude of their losses was tremendous."
