Beauty and brains in the fight against climate change with the BNT
Hoping that a little beauty and a lot of brains can help make an environmental impact for us all, Miss Earth Bahamas will team up with The Bahamas National Trust (BNT) to educate our youth on the adverse affects of climate change. During her reign Miss Daronique Young will advocate for building a Bahamas that is resilient to climate change. Using her title and her charms Daronique aims to help make climate change a more understandable concept for young Bahamians and motivate them to take action.

"The recent devastation in the southern Bahamas due to Hurricane Joaquin was a wake up call for us all," stated the determined Miss Earth Bahamas. "I asked myself what could I do to help, how can one person make a difference? I remembered reading somewhere that coral reefs and mangroves were natural barriers to storms and in many cases they protected the coastline. As a result, I immediately reached out to the BNT."

NGOs challenge Christie's environmental claims
Two local NGOs have accused Prime Minister Perry Christie of preaching environmental stewardship abroad but riding roughshod over the concept at home - and announced their intention to seek a joint hearing before the United Nations to set the record straight. The groups said Christie's recent speech at the UN Sustainable Development Summit was completely at odds with the reality in The Bahamas today, thanks in no small part to the actions of his government.

"Save the Bays and the Grand Bahama Human Rights Association were in equals parts pleased and shocked to hear Prime Minister Christie express his support for sustainable development during his speech in New York," said Fred Smith, QC, a noted attorney who works with both non-profits.

Students queue to know their HIV status
Geneva Johnson tells it like it is. The 19-year-old recognizes that HIV/AIDS is one of the leading causes of death among young people in the country. Hence she recently applauded The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institution (BTVI) for its campus-wide 'Know Your Status' HIV testing initiative. "It's scary not to know your status. You may be faithful, but your partner may not be faithful. I'm just being real. It's real out there, and you don't want to be sleeping with someone who's wearing a mask," she said forthrightly.

Geneva was among the scores of students who queued up for the fourth annual event that went beyond testing, but also had informational sessions to strengthen awareness of the deadly disease. Discussions included how the virus is spread and preventative measures - all a part of the educational component to help people make informed decisions.

Blackbeard's Cay: An open letter to Prime Minister Perry Christie
Urgent action needed on Blackbeard's Cay
An open letter to Prime Minister Perry Christie

Save The Bays (STB) hereby indicates its full support for the call by our civic partner, reEarth, for the immediate closure of the Blackbeard's Cay development on Balmoral Island. The Supreme Court has ruled emphatically that the facility was constructed in breach of the law and ordered that it be closed and the marine mammals housed there be removed immediately. STB therefore considers its continued operation to constitute an affront to the authority of the judiciary and a blow to respect for the rule of law as enshrined in the Bahamas Constitution.

In January of this year, the developer, Blue Illusions limited, was found by the court to have proceeded in the absence of necessary permits and approvals. The company's dolphin import licenses and the site plan approval granted by the Town Planning committee were also quashed and it was ordered that the land be returned to its original use and condition.

Letter: The layers of crime
Everybody is talking about crime on the surface, but not many people are examining the many multi-faceted layers surrounding this phenomenon which impact whether society's efforts to combat it will have any significant effect.

Crime is a huge challenge - a multi-layered one. Like an onion, each layer requires thorough examination, understanding, and analysis, and like an onion, as we strip down each interconnecting layer one by one, we can be assured that it will bring tears to our eyes.

The following are some of those layers I wish to bring into view for persons to think about as we talk and weep about crime in The Bahamas today:

BTO-Atlanta holds tradeshow for travel agents and announces new Family Islands flights

The Bahamas Tourist Office in Atlanta, Georgia recently hosted more than 115 of the top travel agents to a trade show and dinner reception at the Ivy Hall & Roswell Mill Club in Atlanta, Georgia. The event, which showcased various resorts in The Bahamas also served to announce Delta Airlines new non-stop services into the islands commencing in December, making accessibility to The Bahamas much easier.

Commencing December 19, 2015, Delta will fly twice weekly into Marsh Harbour, Abaco and North Eleuthera from Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Airport; Tuesdays and Saturdays into Marsh Harbour and Wednesdays and Saturdays into North Eleuthera.

In addition to this, Delta will also boost its existing services into Georgetown, Exuma and will commence daily service from Atlanta. All of the new routes and flights will use 65-seater EV-CJ7 jet services.

Edward Archer, General Manager of the Bahamas Tourist Office Atlanta said, "Interest in the Islands of The Bahamas from the Georgia market has steadily increased over the past two years.

"We are excited about the addition of these new air services into Abaco, Eleuthera and Exuma which will not only make The Bahamas even more accessible and appealing to our visitors, but will also fulfill a much-needed void. Additionally, these services now provide us with endless growth and promotional opportunities to showcase The Bahamas' unique multi-islands brand."
