GBPC introduces solar to energy mix
The Grand Bahama Power Company (GBPC) plans to introduce Solar generation technology to its energy mix in 2016. In its rate submission filed with the Grand Bahama Port Authority in August, GBPC outlined solar as one of a variety of options to help diversify its energy mix. The introduction of solar technology is expected to replace GBPC's conventional generation located at Water Cay in 2016.

GBPC recognizes that the use of solar provides benefit to our customers, partly by enabling the deferral of future capital investment in fossil fuel generation assets. Solar, when combined with a cost effective energy storage system to capture the sun's daytime energy, will be a benefit to Grand Bahama if the energy can be released during the night when the island's energy demand is at its highest.

Branden Sands from Abaco beats the odds; wins Optimist National Championships held in Abaco waters
Hailing from the tiny settlement of Cherokee, Abaco, Branden Sands and his younger sister Rachel showed their more experienced big city rivals from Nassau just how to do it. The only youth sailors in their tiny settlement, Branden and Rachel largely train in a bubble of their own on Cherokee Sound with their father coaching them but without the benefit of being able to train with other sailors on a regular basis.

When possible, their parents make the 40 minute trek with them to Marsh Harbour and send them on the ferry to Hope Town, Abaco's only active junior fleet with experienced coaches. The perseverance of both he and his sister and the extensive encouragement of their parents Tim and JulieSands is commendable. Truly impressive is that with the exception of attending a number of regattas and training sessions in Nassau in the past two years, Branden has trained with no real competition save that of his sister.

Allan Murray's book 'The Colourful History of The Bahamas' launches this month
Doongalik Studios will host the Book Launch of Allan Murray's book The Colourful History of The Bahamas: A Souvenir Guide for Visitors on Sunday, November 15 from 3-6pm.

The origin of this new book can be traced back to the summer of 1972 when John Chaplin, Headmaster of St. Andrew's School, asked Murray, a newly recruited history teacher, to introduce an 8-week course in Bahamian History. During this time Murray's job was to prepare students for the British-based GCE examination so no Bahamian History was taught. It was not until 1992 that a Bahamian-based syllabus was finally introduced for the new BJC and BGCSE Exams to test students' knowledge of Bahamian and West Indian History.

At the Movies - Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension

One of the taglines for this movie: You Can't Save Them. All You Can Do Is Watch. When a family of three move into a new house and a relative visits they come across a video camera with a box of vhs tapes. The tapes show the goings on of a ritual by another family years ago and the video camera allows them to see into a world that is hidden from the naked eye.

First I feel it is my duty to explain why this movie is being advertised in some markets as Paranormal Activity 5 when in reality it is the 6th movie with the Paranormal Activity brand. Paranormal Activity The Marked Ones was seen as a spin-off and not a direct sequel to Paranormal Activity series of theatrical found footage films (but let's face the fact that is was a SEQUEL.)

Bahamas Press Club to honour media pioneers in black tie event

It was a red letter day Tuesday, November 3, 2015 when executives of The Bahamas Press Club 2014 announced plans to honour pioneers in the field of journalism and mass communications in the country.

During a press conference in the Exuma Room at the British Colonial Hilton, Anthony Newbold, President of The Press Club deemed it "a Red Letter day for us - for you and me, and all those news gatherers and reporters who came and went before us."

He said, "Today we announce that on Saturday, November 21, 2015 - right here at the Hilton - seven people from our honourable and noble profession will be rewarded for their selfless contributions to media in The Bahamas. One of those persons will be given a Lifetime Achievement Award and one will be honoured posthumously, while the others will be branded as Pioneers."

The Lifetime Achievement Award will be given to Mrs. Eileen Dupuch Carron, for her more than 50 years of dedicated and courageous work at the Tribune newspaper, with the last 43 of those years sitting in the publisher/editor's chair.

The posthumous honour will go to the late Kenneth N. Francis, a man who rose from being a press operator at The Nassau Guardian to becoming the publisher and general manager of one of the oldest newspapers in the region, established in 1844.
