They are all the subjects of research articles included in the latest volume of the International Journal of Bahamian Studies published this week by The College of The Bahamas. Volume 21 of the IJBS proves that research by Bahamians or about the Bahamas has truly "come of age". This year's volume features seven major research articles on a variety of topics related to The Bahamas.

Managing Editor, Virginia Ballance, remarked that the IJBS "has truly come of age with the publication of its 21st annual volume. It is now very well established as a niche area-studies journal. As an online journal, the articles are easily found on the Internet through free search engines. And from our statistics, it is obvious that the articles are being used and quoted."

Letter: Where is our spunk 3
Dear Editor,

WHERE IS OUR SPUNK 3

There is deafening silence in this country with regards to the controversial modern building that is being blithely built right before our very eyes - heading upwards to the sky, drilling down below the ground and spanning out across the sea. Pass by at 'knock off' time and be dazzled by the steady stream of non-Bahamian workers leaving the site - same story, different day, just further up the road!

Where are the cries of concern and outrage aimed at the destruction of our sense of place?

Cat Island students participate in student exchange trip to Washington, DC

Principal Jerome Forbes and three students from Old Bight High School (OBHS), and one from Arthurs Town High School (ATHS), Cat Island, arrived October 16th in Washington DC for a two-week high school exchange with Bell Multi-Cultural High School (Bell). The Exchange was organized by Cat Island United and made possible by the generous support of the US Embassy in Nassau.

The exchange brings together Cat Island and Washington, DC students to share learning around environmental conservation, culture and opportunities for advanced education. The Cat Island students are living with American host families, follow their host's academic day and have started SAT preparatory classes.

The students walked the civil rights walk in Harlem, New York City, toured museums on the National Mall, met with college admissions officers and will be visiting the White House, Howard University and the Kennedy Center. Cat Island students participate in environmental conservation activities including student-run recycling, community garden and farmers market. They also are joining in American activities-- football games, horseback riding and trick-or-treating on Halloween-- and sharing their own culture through a Rake' n Scrape performance and a presentation to the student body on Cat Island and the Bahamas.

Principal Forbes is meeting principals and proctoring classes to gain exposure to advanced teaching techniques and resources, which he intends to share with principals throughout the Bahamas and to help take education on Cat Island to the next level. Mr. Forbes reports that this has been a priceless experience. And, while he and the students were already motivated, he says they now understands what it takes to be the best.

The American students will come to Cat Island during the third week in April, 2016.
