The information gained from the assessment has been instrumental in directing resources to those most in need.

Louis Bacon's Moore Bahamas Foundation announces $250,000 donation to relief efforts in The Bahamas
Louis Bacon's Moore Bahamas Foundation announced Wednesday a $250,000 donation toward the relief efforts and rebuilding needed after Hurricane Joaquin.

"The Bahamas are like a second home to me and my family," said Louis Bacon. "We were saddened to learn of the devastation caused by Hurricane Joaquin in the southern islands. Having spent a great deal of time in these beautiful islands sailing, fishing and diving, my heart goes out to those families who live and labor in the Bahamas more remote islands, close to nature but most vulnerable. We pray that necessary aid gets to these islanders quickly and helps them in building back their lives, homes and communities."

Early birthday gift for Kiwanis/BTVI scholarship recipient
A week before his 18th birthday, Deex Colebrook became the fifth recipient of the Charles Johnson Memorial Scholarship. It turned out to be an early birthday present, thanks to the Kiwanis Club of Cable Beach. The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI) Auto Mechanics student has never met the late, Mr. Johnson - a Kiwanian after whom the scholarship is named - but he is certainly benefitting from his vision.

Mr. Johnson, who passed away on May 10th, 2010, hosted Super Bowl fundraisers at his house each February, with the vision of granting a BTVI Auto Mechanics student a scholarship. It was a personal and passionate mission of his, particularly as a mechanic himself. And although he never saw the scholarship come to fruition, the Kiwanis Club of Cable Beach ensured it became a reality.

It is gratifying to see our fellow Bahamians and neighbors from across the sea pulling together to help all those affected. The Bahamas Humane Society is assessing the impact on the animal victims and could use some help. Please consider a donation!

Big thanks to everyone who came out for our Blessing of the Animals held at the Garden of the Groves last Sunday. Father Rudolph Cooper gave a wonderful homily and blessing, as always, and participants enjoyed the tranquil gardens and delicious food and drink at the Garden Cafe. Mark your calendars for our next No Fleas Flea Market on Saturday 24th October, 10.00am until 1.00pm, at the Humane Society at the top of Coral Road.

GB Port Authority updates on GB Power Company's 2016-2018 rate submission proposal
In 2012, The Grand Bahama Port Authority (GBPA) established an Operating Protocol and Regulatory Framework which documents how electricity rates will be set for the Grand Bahama Power Company (GBPC). The Framework, the first of its kind in the Bahamas, set out electricity rates for 2013 - 2015 and required the Power Company to submit a number of studies and statistics to justify any request for changes in rates. It also requires GBPC to submit a rate case filing to the regulator every three years and accordingly GBPC submitted a rate filing for GBPA's review during the first week of August, 2015.

If approved, the new rate structure would mean a reduction in the "all-in" price of electricity for 85% of residential customers. This is a very important step in beginning to assist Grand Bahama's low income based residents. The cost of electricity will remain relatively flat for commercial customers when compared to the average "all-in" price for 2015.

Freeport Players' Guild to host 'Zombie Run' Saturday, October 10
For many years the community of Grand Bahama has witnessed some of the Bahamas' top performers and performances on the stage of the Regency theatre. A non-profit organization, the Freeport Players' Guild seeks to not only provide quality productions on the stage but also off stage. With earlier success in the year with 'Operation Island Hunt: Island Wide Scavenger hunt', the FPG continues this October by hosting another community event.

October 10th 2015 will be a very exciting day for the Freeport Players' Guild and the community of Grand Bahama. In true theatrical style, the Zombie Run is not just your average fun/run walk. In a game of Humans v.s Zombies the Zombie Run more or less takes the approach of 'flag football', of course without actually using a football. Human runners will be given tags that Zombies will attempt to grab while completing the course.

Caribbean Muzik Festival to celebrate commemoration of the Nassau Accord

The occasion also marks the 30th anniversary of the Nassau Accord, hailed as the key step toward ending apartheid in South Africa and securing South African anti-apartheid revolutionary Nelson Mandela's release from prison.

It was during the historic 1985 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in The Bahamas that the landmark Nassau Accord was established. The package of sanctions and inducements increased pressure on the South African government to dismantle its system of racial segregation.

At the Movies: The Martian

One of the taglines for this movie: Help Is Only 140 Million Miles Away. During a manned mission to another planet an astronaut is presumed dead in the aftermath of a fierce storm and his crew is forced to leave him behind. When it is discovered that he is alive a team of international scientists work tirelessly to figure out a way to get him home while his crewmates plot a daring rescue mission which could put all their lives in danger. The stranded astronaut must also find a way to communicate with those off planet and figure out a way to stay alive until help arrives.

With the news of the devastation that has happened to some of the outer islands here in the Bahamas due to Hurricane Joaquin, this film gives us an example of what it looks like when people work together to help someone in need. This movie reinforces that a positive attitude in the face of adversity can give us the boost to do more than we could have thought to do without it.

Hurricane Joaquin - Recovery begins

Royal Bahamas Defence Force Marines left family and friends earlier this week to help those in urgent need on Family Islands that were severely impacted by Hurricane Joaquin. The Impact Teams were deployed to San Salvador, Acklins, and Crooked Island, aboard civilian aircraft that were coordinated by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

A team of Marines were also flown into Stella Maris, Long Island and will be supported by Her Majesty's Bahamian Ship Durward Knowles and Patrol Craft P-301.
