Bahamas National Feeding Network distributes $100,000 to 60 churches and feeding centres
The Bahamas National Feeding Network (BNFN) recently hosted the Frank Crothers Inaugural Best Practices Seminar where some 60 feeding centres and churches gathered at the Melia Nassau Beach Resort for the opportunity to get firsthand accounts from the founder of an international civic organization and local governmental agencies on ways to effectively manage the plight of hunger in The Bahamas.

With some 13% of the population living below the poverty level of $4,247, the workshop helped shine light on what life is like for those who face the hurt and pain of hunger, for children who cannot concentrate in school because their bellies are empty or the elderly who are too proud to beg for food.

A monumental victory for citizens' rights
Save the Bays is hailing a ruling in the ongoing Hawksbill Creek Agreement (HCA) review as a huge victory against government attempts to price citizens out of justice.

The fast-growing social and environmental advocacy movement's chairman, Fred Smith, Q.C., said demanding large sums upfront in cases where ordinary Bahamians seek to challenge official decisions is tantamount to turning the courts into a "pay to play" system.
"In a small jurisdiction like The Bahamas, putting these kinds of financial obstacles in the way of legitimate public interest actions is downright dangerous," said Smith.

Since receiving the loan four years ago, WSC has carried out a myriad of improvement works throughout the island of New Providence and no longer has to ration water use in the capital.

"When we received the loan, there were specific objectives that the loan was set to address," noted Preston Rahming, Senior Manager, WSC's Project Management Unit. "The specific objectives are to reduce water losses, strengthen the institution of WSC, upgrade and rehabilitate selected sewerage infrastructure and to improve the legal and regulatory framework of the sector."

Humane Society's Road Rally and Family Fun Day
Our first ever Road Rally was a fun and challenging course through Freeport. Cryptic clues and directions took entrants on a zig zagging tour of 45 miles around the town. Sixteen intrepid teams took up the challenge which tested common sense, team work and a little general knowledge and logic. Varying degrees of success were had and we are grateful to everyone who participated, win or lose

The Junkanoo Beach Club was a great setting for a fun packed day, the weather was perfect; not a cloud in the sky and the water was calm as a lake. Adults and children enjoyed kayaking and they also tried their hand at Paddle boarding, the children enjoyed playing ring toss, bean bag toss and balloon dart game along with our very own tattoo station.

Letter to the Editor: KB wonders "Is anyone listening to Moody's?"
Was I high or did the Moody's rating agency say that our government needs to practice better fiscal prudence, someone please correct me if this is not true, because I am getting the impression that the Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival 2016 is moving ahead without any accountability to the people or the government of the Bahamas, the word on the street in the Bahamian music circle, is that the Bahamas Festival Committee is once again reaching out to musicians and entertainers, promising them fame, fortune and exposure to foreign markets like before, they want them to enter another song competition, yes they want to use them again, more broken promises, late payments, if any payment at all, more money to go to those with no talent, and those with the talent get the scraps, can you believe this?, not one ounce of accountability for that failure of a carnival, yet they are moving full steam ahead, like 14 million dollars of the people's monies meant nothing, then they want to call you a naysayer when you stand up for accountability and transparency.

Mr. Prime Minister you seriously can't believe that taking our tax dollars and paying for Bahamians to degrade themselves in the streets was and is not a travesty? Again what did Moody's say? What did Standard & Poor's say? Come on, stop wasting our money on PLP street parties and another countries culture, please support your own, Junkanoo needs it, Goombay needs it, and Rake-N-Scrape needs it, they all need the governments full support, just like you gave to your foreign carnival event.

Free cataract surgery for 120 persons on Grand Bahama in November

For the second consecutive year, the Government of the People's Republic of China has partnered with the Government of The Bahamas and the Ministry of Health to provide surgical intervention to help restore eyesight to many local residents who suffer from cataracts.

Minister for Grand Bahama, the Hon. Dr. Michael Darville on Tuesday morning officially welcomed His Excellency Yuan Guisen, Ambassador of the People's Republic of China, and Madame Yang Hong to Grand Bahama Island. Dr. Darville's welcome came during an appreciation breakfast for His Excellency and members of the Bright Journey surgical team at Little Harbour Cay Room of the Grand Lucayan resort.

The Bright Journey Project is a collaborative effort between the governments of The Bahamas and the People's Republic of China. The project was presented by the President of the People's Republic of China, Xi Jinping, during a heads of state meeting in Trinidad and Tobago in 2013.

It was said that the President envisioned assistance given to Caribbean persons who were suffering from disability associated with cataracts, and he pledged his support by sending 100 medical professionals to the region to help treat those persons in need of help.

Dr. Darville pointed out that the health and well-being of Bahamians is of paramount importance to the Christie Administration and that the Prime Minister led the way for the beginning of this new partnership. According to the Minister for Grand Bahama, during the first year of the project some 101 surgeries were performed by a surgical team of eight doctors and nurses in New Providence.
