The difficulties that have engulfed the much-anticipated Baha Mar project could be a sign that the time has come to reevaluate the country's development model, Vanessa Haley-Benjamin said. The CEO of fast-growing social and environmental movement Save The Bays said the project's ongoing struggles suggest the need for a strategy that is more sustainable, environmentally sensitive and less vulnerable to large-scale shocks that affect thousands of workers.

International publications highlight 'the private oasis that is Deep Water Cay'
Getting your company noticed is pivotal when it comes to success and Deep Water Cay is a testament to that. Recently, international magazines Charlotte Living, Caribbean Travel + Life and UncommonCaribbean.com took a different twist and highlighted the beaches, the warmth of the Bahamian Sun and ocean breezes instead of the bone-fishing at Deep Water Cay.

Charlotte Living magazine, an e-magazine reaching ten thousand readers in the U.S., featured the majesty of Deep Water Cay on the cover of their Summer 2015 edition, in an article titled 'Private Oasis Deep Water Cay in The Bahamas'. New hummingbird species discovered in The Bahamas - The Inagua Woodstar
The Bahamas National Trust is thrilled at the recent announcement by the American Ornithologists Union (AOU), of a new hummingbird species on the island of Inagua. The Bahama Woodstar (Calliphlox evelynae) - a hummingbird that is native to the Bahamas archipelago - was originally classified scientifically as two subspecies. It was recently determined however, that the birds are now two completely different species.

In today's world discovery of a new species usually means travel and research in remote areas, however, this newest species was discovered and researched in the backyards of local homes and porches. Teresa Feo, a doctoral student at Yale University and lead author of the new study published in the January issue of the 'The AUK', a magazine published by The AOU, explained, "Much of the fieldwork was conducted sitting at backyard tables of interested birders, holding the recorder in one hand and a cup of tea in the other."

At the Movies: No Escape

One of the taglines for this movie: Survive Together Or Die Together. A businessman from the West moves his family to Southeast Asia to start a new life after he loses his company. While in the foreign city the family finds themselves in the middle of a bloody political uprising as they scramble for a safe way out of the country with rebels mercilessly attacking anyone who does not look like them. During their frantic search for safety, they are helped by a fellow foreigner from another country who has suffered loss of his own.

This is definitely not the kind of movie you will want to see on an airplane flying to The Charming City as it does not show the unnamed Southeast Asian country in a positive light. John Erick Dowdle does a great job in directing this tense motion picture from the screenplay he wrote with his brother Drew Dowdle. Owen Wilson uses his comedic timing perfectly for moments needing an ease of tension after particularly brutal scenes of intense violence.

House communication by the Prime Minister on The Bahamas' credit ratings and economic and fiscal outlook
September 2, 2015

Mr. Speaker, Honourable Members will have seen that, in the last week, two of the major international credit rating agencies released updates on their assessments of the credit rating of The Bahamas.

I want to take this opportunity to provide Honourable Members and the Bahamian public with additional, more detailed information on these rating actions. In so doing, I will present these ratings in their proper context in relation to the economic and fiscal policy framework that the Government is pursuing. That, in turn, will permit me to explain why the Government remains justifiably confident in our growth and employment prospects going forward. To summarize the ratings reports, Standard and Poor's (S&P) announced on August 25th that it was lowering the country's credit rating by one notch, though it still remains at investment grade. The outlook for the rating remains negative.

For its part, Moody's announced on August 31st that it was upholding the country's investment grade credit rating and maintaining a stable ratings outlook. One of the essential, fundamental differences in these assessments relates to each agency's views on prospects for the Baha Mar project and its implications for economic growth and fiscal prospects.

While S&P does place some emphasis on longer term economic vulnerabilities, their main focus is on the short term impact of the Baha Mar delay. Indeed, they hold the rather pessimistic view that the project will not be completed quickly and that, once completed, its performance will be hindered for some time. Mr. Speaker, let there be no doubt, either in this Honourable House or among the Bahamian public, that the Government is firmly committed to a timely resolution of the Baha Mar matter and the completion of the project, in a manner that will serve the best interests of our country. Despite that, S&P takes a dim view of prospects for the project and suggests that, as a result, real GDP per capita in The Bahamas will barely grow at all over the next several years.

Mr. Speaker, such a downbeat assessment simply does not match up to reality.
