Renowned Bahamian businessman Sir Albert Miller passes at age 89
Written by Dr. Michael Darville, Minister for Grand Bahama

Today is indeed a sad day in The Bahamas and particularly on the island of Grand Bahama, as we mourn the loss of renowned businessman, Sir Albert Joel Miller. Sir Albert Miller's name has become synonymous with the Grand Bahama Port Authority where he served as President and co-Chairman for more than thirty years. However, many people are not aware that Sir Albert, as he was affectionately called, at the age of 89 leaves behind a legendary story and a remarkable legacy.

Sir Albert, formerly of Long Island, hailed from humble beginnings and eventually became one of The Bahamas' most prominent and successful businessmen. His career journey started in the Royal Bahamas Police Force where he climbed through the ranks from detective corporal to deputy commissioner from 1943 to 1968. His impressive resume, although extensive, encompassed Director of the Solomon Brothers Ltd., Pepsi-Cola (Bahamas) Bottling Company Ltd., Grand Bahama Utilities Limited and the Freeport Oil Company. Additionally, he held the position of Chairman at The Grand Bahama Island Tourism Board, The Bahamas Electricity Corporation and The Bahamas Telecommunication Corporation.

All-Bahamas Merit Scholar Domonic McDonald humbled by the award
The words "grateful" and "humbled" were used by the 2015 All-Bahamas Merit Scholar, Domonic McDonald to describe being awarded this most coveted award for high school students in the country. The 17-year-old 2015 graduate of Queen's College even beat out his twin brother Donovan, but was relieved that both of them are being afforded the opportunity to attend college, through the All-Bahamas Merit Scholarship programme by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.

Responding to the honour awarded him, Domonic likened his family experience to the one illustrated in the award winning play "A Raisin in the Sun" which focuses on an African-American family living in post World War II era. Despite the many challenges faced by that family, they managed to send their daughter Beneatha to college to achieve her dreams.

Sandals Foundation assists with back-to-school drive
The Sandals Foundation partnered with the Goal-den Sisterhood group last Saturday to give school supplies to hundreds of kids from the Yellow Elder area. This was the Goal-den Sisterhood's first-ever project, and the Sandals Foundation joined forces to help them make the event a huge success.

One of the group's founders, Shavonia Higgs, said the Sandals Foundation's extra school supplies enabled the drive to assist even more children than we expected. "The help of the Sandals Foundation meant a lot because it feels good to know that other people out there wanted to help out, even though they knew nothing about our group," said Ms Higgs. "We were so thankful they reached out to us."

These proactive young people, aged from 7 to 14, were out in force braving the heat, aiming to raise $1,000 to help children from the Family Islands get the chance to enjoy a BREEF Sea Camp experience and learn how to preserve the marine ecosystems of their home islands.

Long Island MP Loretta Butler Turner responds to comments made by Fred Mitchell during his visit to that island
In a vile and disgraceful act, Foreign Affairs and Immigration Minister Fred Mitchell admitted in remarks in Long Island over the weekend to the PLP's victimization of the good people of Long Island. A video and narrative excerpt of Mr. Mitchell's remarks circulated by Elcott Coleby, an official of Bahamas Information Services (BIS), is a clear indication of the vindictiveness of the PLP toward constituencies represented by the Opposition.

In the narrative excerpt from his weekend remarks, Mr. Mitchell suggests that the people of Long Island are being denied certain benefits and that Long Island isn't progressing because I have stood up against the incompetence, poor governance and abuse of power by the PLP.

BTC helps strike-up the Urban Renewal marching band
Today's 600-strong Urban Renewal Marching Band is thirteen-years old, the age of many of its members who thrill us with their stylized performance and diverse musical inventory. Originally an 'add-on' to Prime Minister Perry Christie's Urban Renewal initiative, its success has given it a life of its own, and bettered those of many in the band.

The Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC) has contributed over the years in the way of musical instruments and financial aid to assist the bands expansion as more and more youngsters apply. This year BTC's sponsorship of the Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF) Summer Camp included the Urban Renewal Marching Band Camp over a six-week period.

At the Movies - Straight Outta Compton

The tagline for this movie: The World's Most Dangerous Times Created The World's Most Dangerous Group. In the late 80's five young men put their frustration and anger about living in one of the most dangerous places in their country into the most powerful weapon they had: their music. This tells the story of how cultural rebels who were armed with brutally honest rhymes, hardcore beats, swagger and raw talent stood up to those in power looking to keep them silent because of the way they looked and where they were from. As they spoke their truth and exposed the life they led it ignited a social revolution still reverberating in modern culture.

Music bio-pics usually have to bring something new to the table to be something more than a longer version of an episode of VH1's old Behind The Music television show. The way to do that is with strong acting and innovative directing that makes the story come alive instead of being a collection of interviews and news articles.

Humane Society of Grand Bahama plans road rally event for September 13
The Humane Society of Grand Bahama has a devilish plan to not only entertain a family on a Sunday afternoon, but get their little rascals - and friends - to join in and use some brain cells to help and participate in a fun around-the-island car rally - finishing with a family fun day at Taino beach with games and prizes for all the family.

The Road Rally - on Sunday 13th September - will consist of at least one driver (we insist) and a navigator (non-negotiable), and any extra helpers will be appreciated by the driver and navigator to ensure that the winning rally car and participants take home a coveted prize or two. The rally will start at the Humane Society at 1.00pm sharp, 12.30pm check-in, and participants need to register in advance to secure a place as they are limited.

CARIFESTA XII
I have just seen a post online stating that Carifesta is being held in Haiti from August 21-30.

My question to the relevant Bahamian authorities via government, Caricom or who/whatever is: was any communication sent to The Bahamas to take part in this event and if so, why was this not made known to the creative arts community?

I also hope that the press will actively investigate this - inquiring minds would like to know!

Sir Durward Knowles endorses Lucayan Sea naming
At 98, The Bahamas' best-loved sailing legend and the country's first Olympic Gold Medal winner Sir Durward Knowles knows a thing or two about the Bahamian sea. Now, he says, the time has come to name it.

This week, he signed on to the campaign to name the waters around The Bahamas The Lucayan Sea.

"I think it's an excellent idea," said the legendary sailor known as Sea Wolf. "The waters around The Bahamas should be named -- just so long as they don't rename any of the places that already have names like Exuma Sound."

The campaign to name the waters the Lucayan Sea was the brainchild of Royal Bahamas Defense Force Acting Commodore Tellis A. Bethel, Sr. As a captain who has spent countless hours at sea, he was troubled by the fact that the very thing that defines The Bahamas, the waters, have never been officially named.

"The Caribbean Sea is a very well-defined area that was named after the Carib Indians. But the archipelagic waters of The Bahamas and the Turks & Caicos lie outside the boundaries of the Caribbean Sea and they have never been named," said Captain Bethel. "That's 100,000-plus square miles of water - the beauty and magic that make The Bahamas what we are - and we still say the waters of The Bahamas or the waters of the Turks & Caicos which are part of the Atlantic Ocean."

Bethel thinks those sparkling blue waters deserve better. And he thinks the most appropriate name is Lucayan Sea, a moniker that pays homage to the Lucayan Indians who inhabited these islands when Christopher Columbus discovered the lands in the late 15th Century.
