The National Center for State Courts (NCSC) and the Ministries of Legal Affairs and National Security partnered to deliver a Criminal Gang Investigation and Prosecution Workshop for more than 40 ministry officials, public prosecutors, police investigators, and corrections officers August 6-7 in Nassau. The workshop was funded by the U.S. Embassy's International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) Section through the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative (CBSI) and was part of ongoing U.S.-Bahamian cooperative efforts to fight transnational crime and increase efficiencies in the administration of justice in The Bahamas.

The two-day program-conducted by a former state prosecutor and circuit court judge, an assistant district attorney, a retired 1st grade detective, and a police sergeant-was designed to enhance attendees' knowledge of best practices in investigating and prosecuting gang-related crimes. Workshop topics included intelligence gathering, evidence analysis, and group criminal liability, and utilized hypothetical scenarios and group breakout brainstorming sessions.

The stock split was approved by the company's existing 2,400 shareholders at the recent AGM and will be realized by a three-fold reduction in the existing share price. Memorial dedicated in Fox Hill for lives lost in Freedom Park December 2013
Remarks by Member of Parliament for Fox Hill, the Hon. Fred Mitchell

Today, we are gathered here on this sad occasion. We are proud to be here within the days of the annual Fox Hill festival which was inaugurated by the leaders of the Fox Hill community to mark and celebrate the freedom of the slaves in the Bahama Islands as they were then known and which islands were then part of the British Empire. We are proud to be here to mark this day, sad though it may be to honour some of this African village's finest sons and a daughter.

We also remember not only Claudzino Davis, Shanique Sands, Eric Morrison and Shaquille Demeritte but we remember the nine others who were injured on that occasion. They are alive but bear living testament to the vicious and hateful act which occurred on this Freedom Park on 27th December 2013.

PM Christie calls Pointe development a 'boon' to the Bahamian economy
Prime Minister, the Right Hon. Perry G. Christie is calling the new Pointe development a much needed boost to the country's economy. During a groundbreaking ceremony held on the grounds of the British Colonial Hotel on Thursday, August 6, Mr. Christie said that he was 'elated' to witness the event. He expressed gratitude to the developer and its principals and said that multi-million dollar project would be a boost to the downtown area.

"I would like to thank the Developer, China State Construction and Engineering Corporation, and Mr. Ning Yuan, its chairman, for the investment of $250 million in this harbour-front project, the 250 construction jobs being undertaken by Bahamians and the future employment prospects for 500 Bahamians in the operation and management of the hotel and residential units. This does not include the number of Bahamians who I expect will be employed by retail owners when the facility is fully subscribed and stores are operational," said Prime Minister Christie.

Save The Bays director Romi Ferreira to summer campers: 'Believe in the greatness inside you'
One of The Bahamas' best-loved personalities shared a lesser known side of his life with dozens of campers at the Royal Bahamas Police Summer Camp this week, urging them to believe in 'the greatness inside' themselves and inspiring them to chase the dream in their hearts - just as he did when everything around him could have led him down a far different path.

Romi Ferreira, popular TV personality, host of Bahamas@Sunrise, and one of the leading environmental attorneys in the Caribbean, told wide-eyed youngsters they could be whatever they wanted to be, even if that was prime minister. "Picture yourself in 20 years," he said, "and chase the dream that is in your heart."

Humane Society volunteer reflects on her annual summer visit
By HSGB friend and guest columnist Stephanie Winus of Long Island, NY

Reflecting on my recent trip to Freeport, I couldn't help but realize that my friends no longer ask me IF I am going to the Bahamas, but rather WHEN I plan on going. Since July of 2009, I have been spending a week each summer helping out at the shelter that was the previous home of my two Potcakes.

When I return each year, I am anxious to see what is new at the Humane Society. There is always something different. This year there was the new store inside the front office; it sells various pet foods as well as supplies such as collars, leashes, and toys. Speaking with the shelter director, I found out that a new feeding system had been instituted which is healthier for the dogs as well as more cost effective for the shelter. A more organized kennel card system has also been established.

After the disbanding of an international espionage organization by its government of origin an agent of that now disbanded organization must now face off against a network of highly skilled operatives from a rival espionage organization while trying to prove that organization's existence to his superiors. To do this the agent must assemble the scattered members of his former team as the rival espionage organization attempts to establish a new world order through an escalating series of coordinated terrorist attacks.

Great Bottle Boat Race to be highlight of Grand Bahama Sailing Club's summer camp graduation Friday
The Grand Bahama Sailing Club (GBSC) invites the public to come and watch the last graduation of the Summer Camps, the Great Bottle Race and an Ice Cream Social to celebrate the end of the most successful Summer Sailing Programme at GBSC.

GBSC Junior Instructor Bootcamp (JIB) Kids have been collecting thousands of plastic bottles all summer which are being turned into two craft which will race against each other in the Great Bottle Boat Race at 2pm on Friday 14th August. This environmentally sound science project has resulted in far too much fun, but, as the pressure mounts, the competitive spirit is sure to kick in and all the hilarity will turn to a searing intent and determination held together by all the duct tape available on the island.

Back to school youth sailing regatta to hit the water August 29-30
As the summer sailing camps on New Providence come to a close, Sloop legend Eleazor Johnson (Captain and owner of Lady Nathalie) who introduced the popular Valentines Day "Catch me if you can" annual event has suggested Bahamas National Sailing School and South Beach Sloop Club host a joint regatta on Montagu Bay.

'Pride for Pride' a success at Harrold and Wilson Ponds National Park
Over the weekend the Bahamas National Trust (BNT) teamed up with Dr. Kendal Major, Member of Parliament for Garden Hills and Speaker of the House, for a 'Pride for Pride' workday to revitalise Harrold and Wilson Ponds National Park.

Volunteers from Generali Insurance, Rotary Club of East Nassau, residents of Pride Estates, and BNT board and staff came together to remove graffiti from the parks' boardwalks, remove invasive species and celebrate taking action for the environment.

Harrold and Wilson National Park was declared in 2002 and protects 250 acres of Freshwater Wetland, pine forest and nesting and feeding areas for over 100 different bird species. The park's boardwalk, at the Pride Estates Subdivision, was built by the BNT due to a generous donation from the Rotary Club of East Nassau.

The Boardwalk was designed as a peaceful retreat so that residents of the Pride Estates Subdivision could enjoy the park and view the birdlife that frequent the area.
