BNT staff selected as future conservation leaders
The Bahamas National Trust (BNT) is committed to the conservation of our natural resources. The Trust needs passionate and well trained staff to help execute its mandate of managing national parks and promoting environmental stewardship amongst Bahamians.  The BNT  is excited that Science Officer Agnessa Lundy and Education Officer Scott Johnson were selected as participants in the 2015 Conservation Leadership in the Caribbean (CLiC) fellows programme.

Funded in part by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and supported by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW; www.ifaw.org), CLiC is a prestigious opportunity for up-and-coming conservation professionals in the wider Caribbean to gain invaluable skills and experience working with proven conservation leaders. Lundy and Johnson will participate in three training sessions over a two-year period, and will work in teams to design, implement and evaluate selected projects in biodiversity conservation for sustainable development in the Caribbean.

BTC flies the flag on Haitian Flag Day
Intermittent showers didn't deter Haitians, Haitian-Bahamians, and culture enthusiasts from showing up in droves at the Botanical Gardens, Nassau, for the BTC Haitian Flag Day celebrations. Nearly 6,000 supporters clad in the red, blue, and white of the Haitian Flag, came to enjoy the party with entertainment, regional food choices and chances to win a variety of prizes.

The event was an ode to the blend of Haitian and Bahamian culture within the country's ethnically Haitian communities. Classical Haitian dishes like the fried pork griot and the mackerel-stuffed dumplings called patae, could be found side-by-side with local favourites such as conch fritters and Bahamian baked macaroni. The DJ seamlessly moved from rake 'n' scrape to Kompas beats and the MC's rallied the crowd in both Kreyol and Bahamian dialect.

Dear Billie, I hate my job but I can't leave it because...

How would you complete this statement? Because I have a mortgage. Because I have school fees to pay. Because I am the only one working so I have no other choice. Because I have responsibilities. Because, because, because. Or how about the "but"? What would you place behind the but? I hate my job but... Would it go something like this? But I have a mortgage. But I have school fees to pay. But I have responsibilities. But how will I survive? Same responses right? There must be an alternative to all of the above, which by the way are quite valid "reasons". Are they unsurmountable? I dare say absolutely not!

To be fair, if I had to complete the above statement two years ago, I probably would have said the same things. I would have probably even go on to say that not only can't I leave this job in which I abhor, but I should be thankful I even have a job! How many persons out there are unemployed? Again, these are very sensible, rational reasons. I may be going way out on a limb here by what I am about to write and could possibly receive some hate mail as a result, but what a load of hogwash!

Grand Bahama Birding Group follows spring migration
The May fieldtrip of sixteen birders from the Grand Bahama Birding Group led by Erika Gates, resulted in 34 species and mixed emotions about several of the birds observed during their trip to the eastern part of Grand Bahama.

Their first stop at the Pelican Point settlement evoked excitement as many in the group had not seen the striking male Bobolinks which travel in flocks from their wintering grounds in the Argentinian grasslands and grainfields to the Northern U.S. and Canada to raise their families. They only linger a few days on Grand Bahama, passing through to rest and feed on seeds and berries, their favourite food easily crunched up with their conical bills. The birders were able to observe a mixed flock of 35 males and females.

Posh Paws Fashion Show a 'pawsome' success for the Humane Society of Grand Bahama
The weather, the setting, the music, the models, the food, the drink, the fashions, and of course the guests! All came together perfectly for a beautiful, fun event last Saturday, May 25th at Count Basie Square in the Port Lucaya Marketplace. 195 guests, including residents and visitors alike, enjoyed the beverages provided by our sponsors at Sands Brewery, Bristol Wines & Spirits, ENTwineD, Caribbean Bottling Co., and Crown Ice. A delicious variety of appetizers were provided by supporting Port Lucaya restaurants Molly Malone's, Le Med, Cafe Breezes, La Parilla, Zorba's, After Deck, Cappucino's, the Dive-In Bar and Pisces.

The gorgeous (and handsome) models showed off apparel from Bandolera, Animale, and UNEXSO, in addition to some donated designer clothing that was on sale by the HSGB. Not to be left out were our show-stealing doggy models; potcakes Roy and Roxanne, HSGB alumni; and Tyson, the adorable Dachshund.

Salmonella behind him, Lowe eyes Pineappleman, longer term goals
With a bout of salmonella behind him, 2-time Pineappleman Sprint Triathlon champion Simon Lowe, will be back to defend his title June 6 in Gregory Town, Eleuthera. "I was sicker than I have ever been in my life," said Lowe, 32, of the illness that kept him out of Treasure Cay, Abaco's triathlon in March. "I was out of training for about a month and when I started again in early February it was very disheartening because it felt like I was starting again from scratch. After a few weeks though I felt the fitness coming back and I am now pretty much where I was before the illness happened."

Lowe's biggest challenge will most likely come from fellow New Providence native Dorian Roach, 39 and Grand Bahama's Romeo Seymour, 43. Seymour, who took second in Abaco, has been lighting up the Pineappleman Sprint Triathlon group page on Facebook and it's no secret he's gunning for Lowe, who's at the top of a list of emerging Bahamian triathletes.

Second home market energizing Eleuthera's resurgence
The island of Eleuthera is on track for a major economic boom, which will return the island to its former glory, making it one of the most prosperous islands in the country said Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Perry G. Christie as he delivered the keynote address at the 3rd Annual Eleuthera Business Outlook, Thursday, May 21.

Mr. Christie said that this impending economic boom in Eleuthera could be attributed to the island's strong second home market. "In terms of tourism development, the economic model of mainland Eleuthera is still evolving," he said. "The Ministry of Tourism's records reveal that with 376 second homes actively engaged in short-term rentals, the islands of Eleuthera and Harbour Island are out paced only by Abaco in the Bahamian home rental market."

Letter: National Health Insurance
The newspapers have been filled with articles on the government's plan to introduce National Health Insurance in a matter of months which will mean another tax on the citizens, which is cause for much concern. In a similar vein as the folly of BAMSI and of COB attempting to transition into a University, - we are trying to run before we have even begun to creep!

Dr Robin Roberts provided an excellent insight into the situation several months ago. Have we paid attention? The Coalition for a Better Health System is also making so much sense and it seems as if the relevant authorities are refusing to listen! Why can't we strive for excellence in getting what we have, no matter how small, right first, before leaping off the precipice to do something we are not adequately prepared to do?
