Nurses graduate from specialty training programmes

BNT shares Earth Day message

"Of all the places on our glorious planet, few rival the brilliant colors of The Bahamas."- Douglas Wheelock, NASA astronaut said when sharing a photo of The Bahamas from space.

This year's Earth Day theme "it's our time to lead" resonates profoundly with the Bahamas National Trust and our mission to engage our nation's youth in environmental stewardship. Currently the BNT hosts nationwide youth programs like Discovery Club, Navigators, Eco-Camp and summer camps which promote experiential learning and encourages ownership of the fragile Bahamian landscape. These programs have a track record of encouraging young persons to pursue careers in marine and environmental sciences. Initiatives such as these inevitably contribute to the growing number of tomorrow's environmental leaders.

Shipyard makes a donation to train machinists
As the Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI) is a practical teaching school, having the right tools for students to use is essential. Recently, the Grand Bahama Shipyard (GBS) donated a 'Grizzly lathe machine' with a milling attachment to the school so that students would be able to put their new knowledge into practice and not just learn the theory of machining.

"This significant donation will help to produce quality machinists in The Bahamas," said Don Forbes, Training Manager at GBS. "As The Bahamas is currently lacking in machinists, we thought it was extremely important that we donate this piece of equipment to BTVI, as quality machinists are vital to the Shipyard business."

Cancer Fundraiser hauls
in $100,000 profit

A crowd of nearly 200 persons attended a brunch hosted by the Cancer Society of The Bahamas, purchasing donated items and even joining a flash mob to the tune of Pharrell's hit track "Happy", all in the name of raising funds for the non-profit organisation.

The annual event, Luncheon on the Lawn, held at Old Fort Bay's Spanish-style Clubhouse, was labeled a success touting a profit of nearly $100,000. Luncheon on the Lawn is one of many fund-raisers held throughout the year in aid of the day-to-day operation of the Cancer Caring Center.

"The Luncheon on the Lawn is very important to the sustainability of the Cancer Caring Centre, said Lovern Wildgoose, President of the Cancer Society of The Bahamas. "The Center plays a vital role in the lives of cancer patients and serves as a support hub."

The event, currently in its fourth year, began at 12:30pm with cocktails on the Clubhouse porch, overlooking the lush landscaping surrounding the lawn and offering a breathtaking view of what many describe as the prettiest beach on the island of New Providence.

Aside from eating on the lawn, guests roamed the halls of the Clubhouse, which were filled with donated items up for sale. There was also a raffle offering prizes of everything from dazzling jewelry to succulent feasts.
